Ever since I started using the thrill Library this is become absolutely mandatory LOL. They have some patches that take up to 2 gigs of memory

Thanks for sharing your insight! I have been working/mixing with midi a lot, and I'm really considering trying the audio workflow method. It makes a lot of sense to save on CPU, and bounce things to audio. Also, I have found that when mixing midi, some patches can be unpredictable and not always have a consistent sound to them. If you bounce those tracks to audio, you can have a consistent sound every time. Just something to think about.

Aside from the fact that a midi project would take up a ton more space, and that the audio is not always 'static'. I would like to know thoughts on when exactly people decide it's time to move from the midi project to the mix project. I find myself using the midi project to create a 'very close' rough draft of how I want the song to sound like, but that means I am doing some mixing in midi to get to that rough idea. I still need to apply effects and such in the midi project. Just seems like a hassle to do all that just to then re-do the same thing in the mix project. Maybe that's just the convention though. So I'm curious as to what others do.

I would disagree that that's the only advantage to mixing the original project files. If you have the original project files you have access to all the original settings of everything. For instance, any original reverbs or whatever other effects were uses whether in the VSTi itself or other plugin effects. That's where the advantages are. That's probably why I would never attempt to mix someone else's music. I guess that's probably a non-issue for an engineer. However most big engineers are right there during the recording process so they're pretty much in control of that almost the whole time. Even if there are advantages to mixing audio, you can always bounce it down when you get that point. But nothing beats having the original project files, at least to start with.

Hello, thanks for your video. I'd like some advice on the mix. I recorded all the tracks in MIDI using vst. I also used different effects and EQ to make the instruments sound good. I have an old Macbook 2009. I don't know how to proceed with the mix. I decided to export the individual tracks to audio (aif), but I don't know whether to export them with or without effects? I'm afraid that if I use reverb or EQ in the mix the Mac will chop. Thanks. Jakub

Hi Chris, thanks for the video. One of the thing I'm encountering right now is my level. Sometimes it's hard to look at my overall level with MIDI, and I'm finding my master level peaking during climax, so I start to look into whether I should mix with audio file instead. Would that be another good reason for converting from MIDI to audio file?

Do you do any gain staging (check for clipping or normalize or make sure you're hitting the "sweet spot" for certain plugins) or other adjustments to the output on individual tracks before you bounce?

Hi Christopher Great video. I hope you can help me, I was wondering, do you convert your midi tracks to mono or stereo? Since the sound libraries are usually stereo, I was thinking about the fact that if I pan a stereo track to the LEFT I actually lose the RIGHT side. I was wondering what do you prefer? Thank you in advance. Cheers

Hi Valbon, great question! I think it really depends on the context and instrument. For example, if I have individual string sections, I'll usually pan violins 1 up the middle, violins 2 slightly left, violas slightly right, celli slightly left/right, and basses in the middle. If you think you're losing too much of one side, I would record a separate performance of the same material and pan it slightly the other way.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the video. I'm trying to make Bounce down an Mp3 file from midi and audio on Logic but I can only hear the midi on the mp3 file. Do you have a solution to this problem? Hope you can help and thanks in advance.

Hey Duke! The only thing I can think of is maybe your audio is somehow muted when you export?
