Mixing She's in Love from Little Mermaid

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Filmed during a performance of Little Mermaid at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, in Michigan.
SoundCraft Vi6, mixed with VCA faders using the line-by-line technique. Snapshots recalling VCA assignments, routing changes, and effect level/parameter changes. House system is L-C-R. Vocals are center and orchestra is left/right. Some of the snapshots moves the chorus between L/R and Center.
Script pages have lines marked with VCA number assigned, and location for cues (snapshots) to be recalled.

Awesome video, and great mixing (and programming)! Thank you for all the time and work that went into making this video. It’ll be a great resource for up-and-coming mixers for years to come. I especially like the part where you look at your fingertips to make sure they’re not on fire at the end.

Hey I’ve been waiting years for a new video! I love you mixing technique and have implemented something very similar to my shows thanks to you! I was wondering if you implement any auto mixers or if you did how you would go about doing it? Thanks!

Great video!! I’m currently a student in HS and I’m running audio for our production of guys and dolls, and I have to ask: what’s the benefit of mixing using dca groups vs mixing using scenes and mixing from the input channels?

Also, how to you keep track of who’s on what dca? It all seems very overwhelming to me 😅

Using DCAs you can group according to who's in what scene/bit. You want to have everyone important on their own DCA and ensemble/choir/band grouped. Using DCAs you are mixing from one small area of the console so you can focus better as opposed to individual channrls spread out across the whole 7' wide console. Most consoles with DCA functionality have labels above them that will change with your cues if you set them up accordingly.

I'm not going to complain about this video but i really need your help with a she's in love cover on Sierra Nelson's channel because she still has it and i cannot believe that she still has it even though she has changed her profile picture because i saw that she has changed her profile picture so i thought that would mean that it wasn't so important anymore but it still is and i cannot believe it and it was downloaded February 24th 2017 and that is 5 years ago so it's really old so i want a new one

Would you please tell me why using faders to control every words the characters say instead of just on/mute the channel ?

Mistakes are more naturally masked with the fader, for one. And it's usually necessary to be hands-on with levels, as you see in the video.

How can you program dialogues? And how the faders of the VCA are not moving when snapshot changes if it’s not isolated?

You can just remove the VCAs from the scope, Snapshot Control -> Setup -> Show Scope -> Channel Scope and disable all channels you dont want in your Snapshot
