Great video. There's not much content. With hardware & this genre of beatmaking. Both units seem pretty versatile. The buss comp seem like a good choice for hip hop drum buss. Giving them that extra edge, to make them come to life. Keep this content comming.

Hey, thanks for the nice words! Yeah, the bus comp can really give some sweet shape to the drums. And tweaking hardware is🌟 Thanks for the support🙌 I’ll definately do more of these😀

Nice video, there's not many videos out explaining hardware mixing hiphop beats. I'm also hardware mixing my beats which I just started..It's very time consuming but well worth it at the end..

So true! And thanks for the kind words🙌 Yeah, it’s so good to physically feel the changes done to a signal, both with ears and hands

I have the same setup for mastering (SSL F & Warm Bus) and have thought about doing this for individual tracks... good stuff.

It’s fun, sounds good and yet a bit tedious and constricting, but it does something positive for the creative process IMO, embracing the craft more manually than just loading up plugins. A good process. Cheers!

I found a Crest Audio Century GT soundboard which has been my analog summing... but the Looptrotter Summing (24 channels) where the first 8 channels you can add in drive etc.) is also something I'll be diving into... but yeah, analog if done correctly can really spice up any mix. @@subphotic

@@ajlsoundwave no doubt about it💯 I had a Tegeler summing mixer before, but sold it as I really only use hardware to do bus processing these days, but I kind of miss the flexibility tho

right on - Tegeler summing is a great box! I think even if you just run any mix through the fusion / warm setup, you're already adding back some analog saturation but by doing bus processing, it def. adds character. Driving the low frequency as you did in your example really makes the difference@@subphotic

When you mix and master with these 2 analog gear, would you do any further processing with plugins after it? also which plugins would they be? great vid man.

  • @subphotic

Thanks so much, appreciate it! Usually these two comes last in the chain before a plugin limiter (Pro L2 is my go-to), but in this video I gave myself the challenge to mix the whole beat using solely these two pieces - no plugins. In the next video (dropping tomorrow) I continue with vocals and scratches, again only with these two processors. In the real world I would most certainly complement with some plugins, but here I experiment with how far these units can take me mix wise. I got more mixing videos coming where I limit the equipment in other ways, it’s a fun and enriching endeavour.

is the mix control on Logic IO sample accurate? If not then you risk phase issues when using it. As far as I know you'll need to do blending in the analogue realm to eliminate this issue...

Really good question! Personally I’ve never encountered phase issues doing this, but I’ll run some A/B tests and report back👍 Thanks for chiming in

Is there a reason nobody uses realtime bouncing while I/O is playing through analog gear? Is there any downside doing this instead of printing the mix and bounce it offline?

  • @subphotic

Hey, thanks for chiming in! To be honest, I’ve never really thought about realtime bouncing, never done it… I guess an advantage with offline would be to ensure that everything went well in during the print, and also having the option of tweaking after the fact. But it’s potentially quite time saving with realtime. Hm, gotta try it. Thanks🙌
