In this video, KTO goes to LA to interview 6x grammy nominated,TDE in house engineer, Mixed By Ali.His career began in Los Angeles in the late 2000s recording and mixing for Top Dawg Entertainment artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, SZA, Ab-Soul, isaiah rashad, Bas, Nipsey Hussle, Snoop Dogg, Mac Miller, BrockHampton, Cardi B, Childish Gambino and more. He is also the creator of EngineEars, an online mixing service with renowned engineers. We sat down with him and talked about his love for the city of Vancouver after visiting on the DAMN tour with Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott. Arshan goes on to ask about audio advice for his interview with SoFaygo and talks to Ali about his own audio issues, including recording Section 80 on a broken mic. Throughout the interview he gives advice to the youth on succeeding in the industry and how he declined an offer to Los Angeles College of music and taught himself how to engineer music. He encourages the youth to focus on what they are interested in and “drown” themselves in knowledge. Arshan then asks Ali on who is an artist he thinks is up next. Ali says Baby Keem, who is Kendrick Lamar’s cousin. MixedbyAli and Baby Keem worked on his single “No Sense” together. Towards the end of the interview he talks more about his platform called Engine Ears which connects artists to the right engineers to work with it and be a part of the right business plan. At the end of the interview he also talks about a potential J Cole and Kendrick collaboration.

I just nailed my first internship as a assistant engineer and I didn't go to school and I am a complete newbie. You don't need to go to school BUT you need to work twice as hard and call around a lot you're competing with people who went to school.

Maybe this will help someone. 02:25 Speaking about SD Cards problems. I have a similar problem when recording on the X32 console to a USB stick. I recommend you trying to run >chkdsk command on the Windows terminal to check corrupted sectors on the memory card. This helped me a lot when I had an important talk from the show recorded and needed to deliver it for posting online.

For that SoFaygo interview issue try using iZotope RX-8, helps isolate unwanted frequencies/background noise and lets you cut sections out like an audio-photoshop type ting

Ali must host a workshop in South Africa that would be great
Had one buddy sign with Universal (way back 1999) and another buddy go to engineering school (which was in fairness only like a 3-4 program - I believe) on the long shot that if I got on I'd hook em up with an engineering spot.. Didn't work out for me, but he took that lil certification- joined a union and did really, really well for himself. Always said I wouldn't hv had the patients to set through a lot of those gigs (big bird on ice- type shit) but I couldn't have been more proud of em. RIP. Don't let the $ get ya doin' stupid shit; keep yer head
