Mixed Media & Encaustic Collage Painting - Part 2
Welcome to Part 2 of my FREE Mixed Media & Encaustic Collage painting. This was originally created for Donna Downey's Find out Fridays Series.
We'll unbox this lovely surprise and begin the process of layering papers and fun mixed media textures to our board. This is a really fun project and introduction to using stencils and images to create a textured encaustic collage. Let’s begin!
If you enjoyed the lesson, be sure to watch Part 1 and 3 below:

Also, love your work table!

What. Beautiful project! I've got to try making some of those wings
To make those wings I bet the Melting Pot by Ranger would work. :) cool. Love this piece of art too! Just so beautiful coming outta the dark and into the light :)

Great idea!!
Hello Ivy, I loved watching all 3 parts of this process and am enamored with the outcome. Such a beautiful piece. I saw in another comment that you use the R&F Encaustic Wax and was wondering how hard the wax is on the surface. Does it stay on well without chipping or crumbling? I have seen others use the encaustic wax with the Damar Resin crystals to seal it. I am planning on using wax on my collaged project but was wondering how well your wax stays on. Is it truly necessary to use the resin crystals with the wax? Thank you for your time and for making these educational videos available to others.
I just love this. I first saw encaustic pieces a year ago at a show, I had never even heard of it. I am recently new to mixed media and love collage. I would like to someday do encaustic. What kind of wax do you use? thank you.
Beautiful and fascinating - thankyou so much for sharing 😊 Can you use pan pastels or other pastels on top of a faux encaustic effect in the same way as you did on the wax to add areas of light etc? And are there pan pastel substitutes? TIA
Loved watching this creation! Wings❤️❤️ Question? Would cold wax work to finish this project??
This is soooo beautiful!!! Van I find the woman print somewhere?
Hi Ivy, love your work and your generous videos. May I ask a question? I was always told that with encaustic that the surface shouldbe porus, not to use on top of acrylic, and that should use encaustic gesso. (Which you can't get in clear). Can you tell me more about this, and if it isn't important after all? thanks.
We used to use different coloured tights/stockings to cover the wire to make flowers leaves and butterflies same sort of idea

That's a great idea!
what did you spray with when bringing your piece outside before encausting?
Hi, am enjoying your video. I work with encaustic all the time, and we are always told that encaustic wax should never be combined with acrylic. How do you get around this, and have you found that it does bond well?

That was my concern as well. Every class I've taken and every book I've read says not to layer acrylic under encaustics. Wish there was a clear encaustic gesso to layer over such mediums before applying the encaustic medium.

That is good to know. I don't think I'd do it for a piece I want to sell, but for fun. Your piece was beautiful before the encaustics!
What type of wax are you using and where is it purchased? What a beautiful finish to a beautiful project.

I use Encaustic Medium by R & F. I order it on Amazon! Thanks for watching!
This comment goes along with your quote on the greatest satisfaction from doing the things others say you cannot do: I have been reading the book "The Encaustic Studio" by Daniella Woolf and watching the corresponding instructional DVD. She warns against painting wax directly onto acrylic and vice versa since wax needs a toothy, absorbent surface to stick to. Clearly you are making it work regardless, your picture is beautiful. Have older pictures that you have done with this process held up okay?
So beautiful ! ❣️ Can you use oil pastels if you don’t have pan ?
@IvyNewport
4 жыл бұрын
Yes I think that would work just fine!
This video is just mesmerizing...thank you for sharing your process - it’s informative and inspiring. I’m a it confused though as almost all other demos/tutorials I’ve seen state that encaustic cannot be used with acrylics.I don’t subscribe to absolutes as a rule so am wondering how you manage to make encaustic + acrylics work?
@IvyNewport
3 жыл бұрын
Yes I've heard that rule too. I find that if i use thin layers of acrylic it seems to be ok. I think using really thick layers is when you get a problem. I'm a bit of a rule breaker but haven't had any trouble so far and some of my encaustic pieces are over 10 years old. :) Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed!

Thanks for your response. I, too, take rules with a grain of salt and always consider the context of where the rule is being applied. Looking forward to continued viewing.
What kind of brush do you use for the wax?
@dollyvarney3102

Thank you. Much appreciated.
I read that encaustic and acrylic paints don't play well together. Have you had any issues with stability?
J'm....sans les ailes!
This is awesome. I'm New to encaustic. So minimal acrylic paint works for you? Also, if I have regular pastels (instead of the pan pastels), will they work as well? Thanks
I think that Liquitex clear gesso is helping to hold the wax...that particular clear gesso has a lot of tooth. Lovely work!
Again a heat gun as opposed to a blow dryer is needed ? Kinda of a continuation from my question on video #1. Thanks

kath biddle-dutton with encaustic a hairdryer is not hot enough to bond the layers of wax. I have been watching heaps of videos and would love to give it a go but it’s quite expensive to set up.

kerryd59 that makes bunches of sense 🤦♀️ so happy you responded... thanks so much ready to buy yet another supply but was hesitant...👍
Can the wax be tinted?
@IvyNewport
3 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be! You can tint with oil paint!
I imagine you have to be careful where you hang something if you wax it!
@IvyNewport
3 жыл бұрын
Yes you don't want it in direct sunlight or somewhere near heat.
I noticed that she doesn't respond to the questions about putting wax over acrylic paint. Many say that's not recommended. Is it a good idea or not??
@IvyNewport
Жыл бұрын
This is a common question. Yes, you can use wax over acrylic paint :) xoxo
Are you using paraffin or beeswax?
@IvyNewport

I'm using a blend of beeswax and damar resin. I order it pre-mixed as Encaustic Medium by R & F.
