I think mittens is programmed to be weak at opening but ramps up to the end game. It was developed to do psychological damage by being weak at the beginning for humans to underestimate then proceeds to obliterate them in the future.

We've had chess AI that can beat literally every human GM that has ever existed consistently for a long time. Mittens is actually quite a big downgrade from a lot of chess AI. Mittens was designed to be really good, but within reach of the worlds greatest chess players.

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm pretty garbage at chess but mittens has a very strange and interesting and foreboding style of play. Yeah I kept trying to get it to close the position but it kept breaking through, I think the max I lasted was 50 moves before it won a rook and I resigned. Game probably would've gone to 75 or 80.

Everytime I feel like I'm getting really good at chess so I play against 1200-1600 bots beat them handily and start playing against 1800s I lose if I'm not thinking as hard as I can. Honestly makes me pretty sad but I'm glad chess bots exists because with players around your elo you can always count on them to blunder with bots not so much.

The 1 ELO shows the sheer mastery that Mittens has over chess. To have such a bad elo, you have to evaluate every position perfectly and play the exact worst move, which betrays the true strength of mittens Edit: wow this was a joke, how did I get so many likes?

@@im_lilly736 Levy didn’t try any specific strategy. Had Hikaru played a normal opening, he would lose for sure. The hippo is the best attempt to defeat an engine in time or to get a draw, cause you can close all the pawn breaks and make long term maneuvers. It’s very passive and hard to get advantage with this opening that’s why you don’t see him playing this on normal games… Although i think Levy would lose even with the Hippo, but he could last longer

I got impression it adaptive, without upper limit plus some individual features. Analysed a game I played with it, it shows good moves for few good moves of my own, excellent after my excellent and best after my best, if he can. And he does not do blunders and does not give you tempo like other bots do.

Mittens is different from Stockfish in that it is much more sadistic than Stockfish, Stockfish doesn't underestimate his opponents and plays it safely until he find a weakness and swiftly exploits it to win. Mittens on the other hand, plays very aggressively and frustratingly, it leaves pieces it can take to weaken your position even more and then takes the piece to laugh in your face.

if it passes if you play the hippo, i got pretty low against the position evaluation but then it went back to 0.0 but it was impossible to get out of dead draws. although it can be played offensive when the position is simplified but it is risky, but you can win

I like how Levy and Hikaru both laughed on their stream when they realized they face each other

It's absolutely designed to play with its food. It likes to force you to trade out of position, specifically waits for you to make bad moves first.

Put bullet time ( 1min ) and try to survive. Each turn the bot take like 1 to 4 sec to move so if you survive for long enough the bot will run out of time and you will win :D

Damn! I just finished fighting him with great disappointment because I thought he was weak, after I searched on KZread, it turns out that mittens is in the crazy category. So, I've deleted the app because I got annoyed too quickly😂

I remember thinking "let's play soooo bad moves and I will win!" I was in for a treat.

Playing mitten the chess bot is like playing Hans Niemann. You never know whether you are playing a noob or an engine.

Interesting theory. That's exactly what happened when I put it against Stockfish. It plays a very equal game, with Stockfish being unable to get a larger advantage then 0.5. Then it plays a single bad move after which Stockfish has an advantage of 5+
