Few brands have dabbled in a wider range of products than Mitsubishi over the years. From huge SUVs and wild rally replica performance cars to models like this, the all-electric i-MiEV, introduced in 2013 and sold for just three years. This was one of the very first proper all-electric models to make it to the UK market but pricey asking figures restricted its sales impact. Mitsubishi's i-MiEV customers reckoned though, that the car paid for itself in the cost savings it generated. But does it make sense as a used buy? Let's see.
'MiEV' stands for 'Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle' - and this was certainly that. It was one of the first pure electric vehicles of its kind and it remains one of the better early ones. Yes of course, you'll need to be embarking on your electric adventure with your eyes wide open. You'll need a garage for charging, naturally, and a more conventional car on hand for longer trips. We reckon though, that if you owned an i-MiEV, you'd be surprised by how much you used it. By how enjoyable it was to drive. And by how quickly you could justify the up-front outlay. In fact you'd be surprised all round. New technology has a way of delivering that doesn't it?

I just bought (Sept 2023) a 2nd-hand Czero. I paid £3.5K, has 31K miles, one owner but few drivers, full service history with Citroen. After 10 years the range is 63m when driving carefully. It is very nice to drive and perfect for my running about in Central London where I live. No road tax, congestion charge or street parking charges in my local council. Still in awe of being able to get a full charge for under £2 (in 2023!) when using my home 3 pin plug and the cheaper tariff at night. In comparison my ICE costs me just under £100 to fill the tank, adjusting for range the EV would cost me about £8 for a similar range. Nice video, a bit confused about the penny pinching the last 2 minutes.

The CZero is built in with a self balancing feature. It's slow at 100mA but it works. You'll have to charge with a 3pin granny plug from under 20% and above 80% (lvl 2 doesn't work). Owners have noticed that for 30 mins in both 0-20% and 80-100% the charging stops for 30 mins, this is actually the self balancing gates trickle charging the cells in parallel. Given that your range is 63km, it could take weeks of dedicated 3 pin charging to have all the modules' voltage in sync

Super convenient city runabout [yes, even with the low range] and fun to drift occasionally because RWD and little tires! Maintenance and repairs done last 3 years are windshield wipers and... that's it. Stupid Mitsubishi blew the opportunity to further develop the tech and be ahead of the game today.
