To me the way Mitski plays with song structure, dissonant melodies, and the sometimes awkward phrasing of her lyrics is very intentional and there to communicate emotion. She creates a lot of tension, which makes some of her songs maybe uneasy on a first listen, but the beauty of it is the more you listen the more you can find a new kind of harmony or rhythm within them, a melody or a drum pattern that felt unpleasant becomes satisfying. Her album "Retired from sad, new career in business" does that a lot and it's one of my favorites of hers!

This is probably my second favorite album from her, Lush being my absolute favorite. I feel like it’s because the lyrics in makeout creek speak to me so much. I’d love for you guys to listen to Lush because I’d say it’s her most different album (and it was also a school project!) and it kind of sounds like a horror movie soundtrack to me

On drunk walk home, it really is mitski screaming! Her live ones are even more powerful. From my knowledge, she used to be in a metal band. I can't wait for more reactions, especially to lush and puberty 2

I Will is a personal favourite, she essentially wrote a love song with all of the things she wants someone to write for her. I have a tattoo of the scene from the simpsons this album is named after!

Mitski and patrick both do production together. And there is no puberty 1. She makes the lyrics first and beat later so ur correct

Bury Me At Makeout Creek is a story about a girl falling in love for the first time (aka her first love) in late spring/early summer. Then breaking up in late autumn/early winter. Mitski's vocals sound shaky and she doesn't "finish her sentences" right all on purpose to give it an angsty sound like a teenager. She's committing to the bit.

her songs are definitely weird without pattern but that's why i like them; she's not boxed into a structure. kind of like brockhampton, everyone hated iridescence for being all over the place but that's what makes the music fun + you can tell she hears songs in her head and can bring them to life without being over polished if that makes sense.
