Lyrics:
There’s a bug like an angel
Stuck to the bottom
Of my glass, with a little bit left
As I got older
I learned I’m a drinker
Sometimes a drink feels like family
Family
Hey, what’s the matter
Looking like your sticker
Is stuck on a floor somewhere -
Did you go and make promises you can’t keep?
Well, when you break them
They break you right back
Amateur mistake
You can take it from me
They break you right back
Break you right back
When I’m bent over
Wishing it was over
Making all variety of vows I’ll never keep
I try to remember
The wrath of the devil
Was also given him by God

Fucking NOTHING could have prepared me for the way that “FAAAAAAMILYYY” with the choir hit. I was like “oh! New Mitski dropped! I’ll listen to it when I get to work!” This was NOT appropriate for the office. I started bawling. Thank you, Mitski.

The moment where the choir director supports the old lady who has just crashed into them and then gently caresses her face is such a soft moment that feels so opposite to what the narrator is expecting from the world.

This! And the moment when the woman accepts it, and responds to the tenderness and the human touch she obviously craves, softly touching the fingers holding her face. This part broke me, I started bawling my eyes out at this point. What a masterpiece of a video.

Also the warm light on her face, the only such light on her throughout the video.
Ironically enough…..I listened to this song completely drunk out of my mind last night I felt glued to my bed because the room was spinning and the feeling I got from hearing the choir flood in it felt like divine intervention. Being drunk hearing this song in a sense you can really hear Mitski’s intention and heart because it feels like she’s been there. For people who find comfort in escaping through those means this song is arresting. It made me feel less alone it made me feel like there’s got to be another way to feel content. Because how many times do I want the room to spin before I realize a drink won’t save me from what I have to wake up to in sobriety? I don’t think it’s meant to instill a sense of guilt I just feel like Mitski has probably felt the dark side of a comedown before in whatever way that looks like. But this song felt like a lullaby for people who’ve been in AA before. All that to say what a gorgeous and brutally honest song. It feels like what’s missing from music. Thank you so much Mitski.

To those who are still seeking, still questioning, still not sure about their faith, here's an invitation. Understand that we, as humans, are limited. We often make mistakes, go astray, and lose our way. It's not about perfection; no one is. As it is stated in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Recognize that actions alone won't bring ultimate salvation. It's not about counting good deeds against the bad. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Believe in the transformative power of love and forgiveness embodied in Jesus Christ. He laid down His life so we could find ours. The Bible states in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." True change and enlightenment come when we turn away from our old life and towards a new one - one guided by compassion, love, and humility. Acts 3:19 says, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." Express your faith, not only in words but also in actions. Embrace love, kindness, and righteousness, just like how Jesus lived His life. As Romans 10:9 suggests, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Consider baptism, a symbolic gesture of your new journey, your decision to leave the old behind, and embark on a new life in Him. Matthew 28:19 encourages us, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Lastly, remain steadfast. Consistency in following Jesus and His teachings is the key. As Jesus says in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commands." This is not a demand but a warm invitation. .,.,

The video is about her addiction issue with alcohol. The old woman stumbling across the street is how mitski imagines the addict part of her personality: a pitiful women who through a lifetime of foolish decisions becomes an ugly, lonely haggard. At one point, she stumbles into the arms of the gospel choir conductor. It is sadly the only part of the video where the old woman feels comfort. Her facial features soften as she's touched by a warm orange hue. This represents the times in the addict's life where they stumble across religion/spirituality/love and catch a glimspe of what it is like to be happy. The burden of their trauma has finally been lifted. Unlike drugs which only numb them to that pain (and then that pain comes back twice as strong when they sober up), this actually lifts the boulder off their back. But rather than being grateful the old woman spitefully turn down her chance at redemption. This is probably to due to some mixture of: "it's painful work", self-sabotage (and associated feelings of unworthiness), and old habits/thought patterns which are hard to rewire. The video ends with the woman walking off into the distance. Back into her lonely, depressing life. The cross is still visible from the side. That is because the truth is there is infinite opportunities for redemption and an inexhaustible fund of forgiveness from the higher powers (whether you think of that as God, spirituality, or love). But you must do the hard task of accepting it's help. Thank you mitski and the team for putting together this pure piece of art. I hope i can meet you one day. This is very inspiring work.

This really hit me close to home, reminds me a lot of my mother.. I'm 25 and my mom is 66 years old and she's been struggling with depression for all her life and has a hard time getting out of bed. I always go to check on her and she'll usually vent to me about how she grew up with a abusive mother (who recently died in 2021 during covid), being mistreated and abused by family/friends when she was a kid/teen, and how my dad made her scared of the world and the things she gave up to raised our family and support my dad who was a alcoholic and was physically abusive to her for years until they both reached their 50s, they verbally abuse each other frequently now (they almost got a divorce in 2011 but they're still married.) She lost 3 babies(stillborn..), and had 4 (including me being the youngest and 7th child) all boys. My dad got sick one day in 2016 on my senior year of high school and was knocked out for months on the hospital bed, basically in a coma. My mom visited him almost everyday, stayed there every night until he got better. A few years later pre-covid he found out he has cancer, my mom did the best she could to love my dad but he never really changed for her (except for not drinking beer anymore, but that wasn't really enough for my mom.) Yesterday my mom went to the doctor and found out she has a kidney infection and she told my dad, he was upset but mostly irritated and said "I am going to miss a lot of work and money just to make sure you are okay. I'm giving to much time for you guys" and asked for money for gas so he doesn't miss work tomorrow. (He can stay home since he gets disability/veteran pay) He said a lot of hurtful things to her and done so much damage to her before but that sentence really impacted her. That night I went to check on her in her room after being in the hospital, expecting her to vent about everything like usual, I sat next to her on her cluttered bed... and all she did was put her head on my shoulder and said nothing. She was just quiet, i put my hand on her head resting on my shoulder. She doesn't have to tell me, but i know she feels like she gave up so much time for my dad and our family and for me.. I never seen her so done with everything, she's been broken over and over again.. I'm still hurting for her, I wish can do more for her and that life treated her better. I wish I can give her a better world than this.

It can mean two things: that this pain were going through is a test to make us stronger and solidify faith (as god made deals with the devil to see if his followers like Abraham would come closer to god after being tempted)…or it could mean that there is no good and things are hopeless when god delivers us nothing but pain and suffering. I love how this keeps in the world from Pearl, Only Heartbreaker, and Drunk Walk Home. It’s the seemingly inevitable steps after being the traumatized person, the girl with drunken self protective rage, the girl who pushes others away, and finally the one who dully acknowledges a drinking problem. All of her songs express these snowballing iterations of who she is… and often crescendo. Not this one. Just acknowledgement. No plan to change, because it feels too late to change.
I'm genuinely so grateful for Mitski and her music. I'm always in awe at how she's able to create universes in every song, completely immersing the listener in each story. She really makes the world a better place with her art. "making a variety of vows I'll never keep" I think that's the most powerful line in the song, there's many many times where Im very emotional and I'll I think to do is pray so I do and I promise that I'll change and I'll be good and get better but I never do. I always, always end up in the same position making the same "vows" over and over and nothing ever changes.
i'm not an alcaholic but i'm bulimic and this also resonates so much with me, like how every time i tell myself "this is the last time i'll binge and purge" and then repeat the cycle over and over and i just- wow this feels like such an intervention that i couldn't receive anywhere else.

Mitski you are always right on time, this is exactly what I needed at this time in my life. It feels like I've been mindlessly stumbling through the past couple of months and this song brought me right back. I see my whole life laid out in front of me now, years ago when I was a kid in love and how I cried to your older albums, and the warm fuzzy future that this song shows me. This song feels like those random moments in your life when your mind suddenly clears and your body becomes weightless and you can't see or think of anything except for what's right in front of you.

@@ivoryas1696 i didn’t mean it literally, it was just that I felt like one. I was stupid and naive
As someone with a lot of life experience in my 38 years, I find that Mitski is about self reflection and awareness. She's taken the time to sit with herself and isn't afraid to face talking about people's own sh*t they bring to the table in her lyrics. Younger people could do well to have that perspective. It's not always the other people in your life who are the problem. Recognize patterns that you cause and make changes.

exactly. sometimes feeling and addressing your negative emotions is a step to being better. most people don't understand that, and think you'll never change or hurt a lot of people.
This song and video reminds me of my heavy drinking phase. On the surface, it looked like I was having fun, and I did have some fun. But deep down all of that was a battle with my personal demons. I'm so glad I made it out alive.
This song reminds me that even though you may offer people the invitation back into your life; they are free to accept or reject. There is something kind of weirdly comforting about that. It keeps with the theme and tone of the song. Calm, assured, but a sense of sadness they chose to reject or leave.
"I try to remember The wrath of the devil Was also given him by God" GOSH ISTG I CAN MAKE A WHOLE ESSAY FROM THOSE LAST LINES 😭 she really is the epitome of art, her lyricism inspired me so much

Thinking about my father's broken promises, he just made them because it was easy to say "tomorrow I'll stop drinking" than to fight about it. I doubt he ever meant it. I'm sorry about your mom, it's hard... Especially when the sober moments they didn't even try that hard to stay good for you
“Did you go and make promises you can’t keep well when you break them they break you right back.” THIS PART WAS SO GOOD I LOVE MITSKI 💗
she never fails to capture that indescribable feeling that just makes me stare into nothingness. another great song from the goddess herself.
I first heard just the song and it vaguely made me think of my late grandmother who I just found out after her passing has struggled with alcoholism most of her life. Watching this video now has completely annihilated me.

It’s always good to have more Mitski in the world. Don’t know how she does it, but the visuals and music evolve every time.

@@juliarichard9741 RIGHTT also like in the distance theres another sign that says "end" which is so cool because it just means that she chose the dead end that will eventually lead to her actual end 😭 (the song is about addiction so i just thought that was a cool detail)
I come back to this so often. The imagery of a fly being perceived as an angel is just so stunning
the final scene when the women is stumbling away and theres two dead end signs, theres also a glowing cross with a one way sign pointed at it. the woman ultimately walks through the dead end. god the way mitski can create the most simple but beautiful symbolism is amazing

Nobody can dropkick my heart into tiny little pieces quite like Mitski. NEVER RETIRE! The lonely need your voice to get us through the night.
this hits so hard dude. i grew up with my mom being a single mother and her being an alcoholic for most of my childhood. she's sober now, but the damage is irreversible.
Mitski isn't music, it's an emotion
Hearing new songs with your beautiful angelic voice always makes my life more enjoyable then it is and gets me through it all. You may never read this but thank you truly mitski. Can’t wait to hear the whole album in September.
Listened to this song for the first time 1000 miles from home in Colorado as the sun broke through the clouds, lighting up the mountains and cried my eyes out. I never listened to an artist who moves me like Mitski does. I’m so excited for the new album ❤️

i need to give Mitski the biggest hug
Amazing video, amazing song. I'm curious about Mitski's most "American" album to come. The video itself is art and subtle political and religious commentary already, conveying such complex feelings. The youth not doing anything but watching the old helpless woman, the gospel choir singing, Mitski not swaying with the choir, Mitski's facial expressions. Love it. I liked her before but now I am a big big fan.

This song came out the first week I came to rehab. I now have 30 days clean and sober! This song hits in the hardest way🫶🏽 thank you mitski!
when the choir came in the tears started pouring omg
I love it. The visuals... the instruments... Mitski's voice... everything. It's so poignant and vivid and the feelings it gives me are just beyond my petty little mortal comprehension. Thank you mother for delivering another banger... at first I thought people on Twitter (Yes I said twitter not X) were joking because they were starved of Mitski content? I still can't believe it. Before watching this I felt really down and now I feel completely at ease with everything. Thanks, Mitski. You're so cool.

The week this came out, I had my first international trip without my parents. My church group crossed Spain and a lil bit of Portugal for 11 hours in a night unexpectedly cold for summer. My phone only had 15% charge then, but I had put this song anyway to be able to sleep. It always bring me back to that memory.

First time I listened to this song the choir hit me like a ton of bricks. Since it starts off softly I had immediately cranked the volume. Mitski got me good, like a fish hook set in a yellowtail tuna, and she reeled me right in. What a fine album. Just saw this video version for the first time, and just wow.

I'm 32 and I've survived so much of my life with you, Mitski. Since "Bury Me At Makeout Creek" till now, it feels like we keep growing together. I have so much respect for you and to see you back with music so soon feels like a gift.
Mitski may be the most unquie modern artist I've discovered. She truly sounds like nobody else, and I have massive respect for her creativity. On top of that, her videos are stunning, and you can see just how much 'art' is truly involved here. She puts the art back into music 🎶 and clearly a lot of people appreciate that.
The actress in the video though portraying being drunk so well, moving so chaotically so off balance, moving so haphazardly while not being drunk (im assuming they didn't get drunk just for the video) is incredible

ngl this one made me cry a bit.
