This is the domestic form of Indian bison. It is believed, our ancestors started taming the wild animals many centuries ago. Even today, both the reared and the wild forms share the fundamental features.

The Gayal (Bibos gaurus frontalis) is a domesticated subspecies of Gaur (Bibos gaurus), interestingly, the closest living relative of the gaur is the Banteng (Bibos javanicus), which also has another domesticated subspecies being the Bali Cattle (Bibos javanicus domesticus), both gaurs and bantengs are classified within the genus Bibos, which also includes the Kouprey (Bibos sauveli), unlike the gaur and banteng, the kouprey has no domesticated subspecies, Bibos is the most basal extant genus of true cattle (subtribe Bovina).

@N is enough, actually, the gayal or mithun is not a separate species from the gaur, it is actually a domesticated subspecies of gaur, also the genus Bos is actually polyphyletic as it does not include the yak, gaur (cladistically including the gayal/mithun), banteng (cladistically including the bali cattle), and kouprey do not belong here anymore, they are relocated to the genera Poephagus and Bibos respectively, thus restricting the genus Bos to only the aurochsen, which cladistically include both the Domestic Cattle (Bos primigenius taurus) and Zebu (Bos namadicus indicus), the genus Poephagus (Yak Lineage) is actually a sister genus to the bison (genus Bison) while Bibos (Gaur Lineage) is actually the most basal and distantly related genus from all the extant genera of true cattle (subtribe Bovina).

Generally, the North-East soil are acidic in nature, as a result there is low in salt content in fodder and ultimately salt hunger develops in Mithun and other cattles of this region. More over once the mithuns are fed with salt they tend to become friendly and return to the place where they are fed with Salts. Inface the goats are also very fond of salts and we even feed salt to the goats...will someday post videos on feeding goats with salt...
