    baconsoda Thanks ! I feel bad its been so long since I posted a new tutorial. I would love to do a carving series but unfortunately I currently don't have the time. My next video that I would like to release is my 2013 Trip to a wood carving school in Austria. Then a short video on inscribing your work using a wood burning unit (I show how to sign you work on tiny carvings) and then after that I plan on releasing a very detailed video on Carving linked chains (which Im working on now as Im carving a 48" linked chain). The only issue is finding the time to finish these videos :-) Thanks again for your interest and support! safe carving - Joe

    MisterSplinters Thanks Joe, I am very interested in the wood burning because I am trying to burn my name on turnings and it's not easy so any tips would be very useful. A 48" chain! Now that's a marathon for sure. Best Wishes, Brendan.

  • @MisterSplinters

    @MisterSplinters

    9 жыл бұрын

    +baconsoda Thanks Brendan - when it comes to wood burning your name on your turnings make sure the wood is raw (no finish applied yet) and invest in a good wood burning unit (approx. $150-). A unit that you can control the temperature is key. Always practice on a scrap piece of wood (the same type of wood as the project). Also its harder to sign turnings because of the round shape so rest the turning on a soft pillow and then rest your hand that your holding the wood burning pen in on a wood block or book that's the same height as the turning. I hope Im coming across clear. The video will be easier to get my point across. Just have to find the time. Safe carving and turning - joe

    +MisterSplinters Thanks Joe, these tips will be very useful, especially the one to not add finish before burning. I was sealing, or oiling, the wood and then burning it. I'm really pleased to find out I was wrong because I was getting nowhere. Best Wishes, Brendan.

    Hi I’m cleaning up my inbox and Not sure if I answered your question. I’m using the Rick buys carving knife sold by woodcraft.com you need to sharpen the blade. It’s a great knife that holds the edge. For ready to carve knives try the flex cut brand. The but’s knife and flex cuts cost around 25-35 range (US dollars) apologize for the major delay in the reply.

  • @MisterSplinters

    @MisterSplinters

    Hi, to test the sharpness you can see if the knife slices through a piece of paper. If you play my basic owl video (part 1) I show the viewers that technique. A great book that covers how to sharpen knives is the Richard butz how to carve wood book. You can purchase on amazon or eBay. Plus woodcarving illustrated magazine has several sharpening articles. Then place the thumb of the hand that your holding the knife in and place it behind the Blade. Then the hand that you are holding the project with , place that on the back of the blade to push the blade through the wood. Cheers Joe

    Hi, tough question to answer because it depends on the wood ,quality of carving knife and how sharp the blade is. I would recommend that you strop the blade every 30 minutes of carving or if you feel like you are applying more pressure for the knife to cut then I would strop it. Hope this information helps. MisterSplinters Dear mr. Splinters, first let me say how much I enjoy your videos, the instructions are clear and makes me feel like I could actually carve wood. I wanted your suggestions, I would like to buy a wood carving knife but don't want to make a mistake and get one that is either too cheap or simply ineffective. Could you please recommend a quality wood carving knife that hopefully it isn't too expensive? (And good for a female to use) And could you also recommend a place to buy the wood to carve? (All the wood around my house is very green right now and I don't have the capability of chopping down trees myself. And my neighbor would not approve either lol) Also if you can make a recommendation for the type of wood I should buy I would really appreciate that as well, I had read that Mulberry is good to carve but I would like your advice. Thank you so much for your videos, I had always wanted my grandfather to teach me how to carve wood he was excellent at carving duck decoys, but he passed away before he had the chance to pass on his skills to me. Thank you so much for your videos and I really appreciate your advice.

    I see your recommendation for the knife I will follow that link but I still need your advice on the type of wood that's good for a beginner and where the best places to purchase that quality wood. Also if you have any other recommendations for tools or Necessities for beginner I would really appreciate it thank you

    @@ttthecat Hi, im going through my channel and see that you wrote me a couple questions, but it seems like I didn't reply back to you. If that's the case I'm really sorry, I'm guessing you tube didn't alert me. If you still need answers to the questions just email me at splinters85@hotmail.com Thank you, Mistersplinters
