This was my first ever carving! Unfortunately, I only made it a quarter way through the star before the wood split in half and I sliced into my left index finger and severed two tendons. I was too impatient to wait for my cut resistant gloves to be delivered and instead used my cloth gardening gloves. I learned that they are no substitute. I had surgery to reattach the tendons last night and now have to do hand therapy. It will be a long recovery, but hopefully not the end of carving for me :) Please learn from my mistakes and wear proper safety equipment

Thanks Doug, I guess I've got it bad? I pop onto YT most mornings ,while having a coffee, to see who's posted something. When I see " the blue dot" beside your name I feel like my cool uncle is bringing me a present. This morning I saw "the dot" and I thought to myself... Oh Boy! So, thanks for my present! Doug, a month or two ago I was carving the scarecrow from your video when the entire bottom section of the wood suddenly snapped off. I ended up cutting a portion of my right index finger off, I knew right away it was a bad cut so I grabbed a towel, wrapped the finger and headed to the ER. I usually always wear a glove, but for some reason I didn't put it on. The next day I found the finger on the floor of my shop, I will never make the mistake of not wearing a glove again. I'm really enjoying this series 👍

Hi Doug, I've been a carpenter in UK for over 40 years and it never ceases to amaze me how even the old boys never learned to sharpen tools and make light work instead of forcing blunt tools into wood or masonry until something snaps or slips. At best, they end up with grazed knuckles and at worst, they go get bandaged up then return and continue EXACTLY as they left off all over again. Even the guy who taught me when I was a kid had lost two finger halves using saws in the machine shop - I noticed it and decided NOT to do as he did! I have been watching loads of carving videos recently, including most of yours and I will be getting some safety stuff to start off until I can handle the stuff with confidence, which I know from plenty of tool experience comes with practice.

Very inspirational. Cut story; bad finger tip cut a few years ago (not knife) the ER would have put 2 stitches. Instead I taped it down with butterflies. Had to do it with arm reaching upward as high as possible to make bleeding stop. Healed well.

I know it's a no brainer for someone that has been carving for a while, but it's the perfect starter project for a beginner. There is so much involved from getting comfortable with your knife to carving from every different angle to the grain to cutting to a line accurately, etc. My first attempt came out, but not nearly as good as I thought it would!!!! I will be doing a few more before I start anything else. Thanks again for the great videos. Richard

Had a gouge slip full force off a "damp"piece of wood. Went into the webbing between my left thumb and index finger so far I could see my tendon. The dr said I was really lucky it missed my tendon and bone by mm. Ended up with 4 stitches and an interesting scar. I take blood thinners, I don't carve without my glove on my left hand and band-aids (2-3 deep) on my rt index finger and thumb. I am also keenly aware of where my fingers are in relation to the blade. Lesson learned. Been a year, no trips to urgent care! :) I need to buy stock in bad-aids though. :) Thank God my gouge was super sharp. I went clean into my hand.

You have reminded me of some very important things. And, as a man with the last third of my right index finger missing, I am listening! The ideas are elementary. Thanks for another great informative video. I'd like to share a little tip I learned from my Grandma about 60yrs ago. Back then we didn't have stuff like stop clot. One day she sliced herself pretty deep with a paring knife. She just grabbed the sugar bowl and stuck her hand in it. Within a few seconds the sugar turned red, but the bleeding stopped. I have used this method at home a couple of times and it does work. Hope no one will need to use it, but there you are. Keep up the good work. Your instructions have helped me a lot.

Doug, you make it very enjoyable for this visual learner to grasp the concepts of carving and whittling. I particularly appreciate the “homework” of creating a Moravian Star. I’ve done two this far - one yesterday and the other today. Let me see if I can put my first attempt into words that might strike a cord with others: It looks like it was carved in a runaway stagecoach! My second one turned out good, by my standards anyway. Doug, I love your videos! Informative and funny. I was carving with a glove, ignoring your advice to know where the knife will go if it slips or the wood breaks and stabbed a gash in my hand through the glove. Luckily I didn’t sever anything and it has healed well, but don’t be foolish just because you have the glove on! Never rush and never carve when you’re tired.
