Missouri comes Together in this episode of Horse Rescue Heroes. Tawnee and Jason visit Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue in Lincoln, Missouri for a day of filming and mentoring. Beth is pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into her rescue from her personal assets, can the rescue become self sustaining? How did they go from 2 donkeys to 300 in 2 years?
The people, animals and events seen in this reality TV show are not paid actors, and are real people reacting in real events. Some events may have been dramatized for effect.

Inserting a blurb from Bee Tree Farm in Texas where she offers the opportunity people mingle with her dairy goad herd. PRIVATE GOAT WALKS THROUGH HONEYSUCKLE RANCH - YEAR ROUND $75/hour This experience begins at the Honeysuckle event barn in the center of the ranch property. Guests are invited to meet at the barn at the agreed upon time where they will meet with Jenna and the entire herd of dairy goats along with their livestock guardian dog (LGDs) companions who live with the goats and protect them from predators. The dogs are extremely large and extremely friendly! Our goats have all been handled since birth and raised by humans, so they absolutely love visitors. They also love walking through the ranch and will follow humans anywhere. The walk is a loop into the center of the property and is on uneven ground. Guests will encounter lots of brush, mesquite trees, cactus and plenty of rocks. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring along something to drink.@@peacefulpasturesdonkeyrescue
In Missouri this woman needs volunteers to help with her 300 donkeys so come people and help her.
What a stunning lady farrier and great teacher too
I don't think you get compassion fatigue from doing what you love, but from the stressful experience regarding economics, and seeing the same problem over and over, which makes you feel like it's never getting better. When you can't save everyone, and if you aren't able to let that go. Like they mentioned in the video, that you don't feel like anyone can do what you do, so you either don't trust them, or don't trust adopters. Which in many cases start to resemble hoarding. I volunteer as a foster home for cats, and I'm aware that death is part of life. Which means that sometimes I get difficult cases, as they know that I accept that we might not be able to help that animal, and by ending its suffering, we also make room to help another. ❤
I couldn't help but notice that Peaceful Pastures' location is fairly close to the lakes areas in Missouri. The places where a lot of wealthy people go to play. I think it should be possible to bring in more events if they tap into the summer vacation/lake goers populations, that could help bring in more donations. Maybe having a campground on the farm as another source of income. With some donkey-centric educational camp activities? Just a thought.

Thanks for commenting! Peaceful Pastures presently offer Air BnB experiences to tour the rescue for those interested in visiting and learning more about what is being done to save these precious animals. They have also considered establishing a camp area like you suggested and exploring all the aspects like feasibility, need, liability, time, and additional required resources before moving forward. One thing I really liked about this organization was the openness to new ideas. She is like a sponge absorbing the mentoring & implementing it. She knows she is over capacity & is seeking to address it. This place does lots of rehab cases so it does take longer for them to be ready for adoption. It has the acreage to grow & is already seeing an increase in donations. There is potential here for a winner. It is going to be hard to choose.
I love Peaceful Pastures! I know we see a lot of horse rescues that have a few donkeys, Beth has just flipped the tables… I didn’t realize she had so little help though… volunteers usually think of dogs/cats/horses, the more popular pets, so it is good that word is getting out on these lovely smart creatures!!❤ Maybe I should move to Lincoln…. 😊

Peaceful Pastures is very blessed to have Kendra as their farrier and Co-Board Chairperson!
Realizing your limits is absolutely the most difficult task in any rescue. Drawing the line and letting go is heartbreaking. I've been involved in horse rescue, domestic animal rescue and wildlife rescue and they absolutely all have the same issues. It is heartbreaking to have to leave any behind and they can haunt your dreams forever, but you have to focus on the ones that you can save and try to stay as positive as you can. Burnout happens when you try to do everything and the financial struggles can shorten your life. I think it's vitally important especially right now that rescues prepare themselves for some serious economic times and try to insulate themselves as much as possible. As more people are having to make tough decisions within their households more animals are facing eviction and fewer donations are likely. This rescue is doing amazing things for these wonderful animals, but I feel they're walking a tightrope that is leaving them very vulnerable to an economic downturn. One thing I would suggest would be better land management which unfortunately likely means fewer animals. In a drought the land can get beat down to nothing if over grazed and it can take years to recover. If deteriorated enough only the weeds will come back rather than your grass. If they don't have their own hay it might also be worth converting or investing in some acres for hay production. I wish my land was closer as I have 60 acres of grass and only 1 old horse left who has cushings so can't be on pasture. It's too hilly and rocky to bale, but I used to run 20+ horses on half of it and only needed to hay for 2-3 months in winter back when I was rescuing horses. It really helped keep the cost of their care manageable and allowed for pasture rotation which is even more critical during droughts. There were some great ideas here for tapping into more sources of funding too, but as everyone knows, liability is always a concern.
I just love Peaceful Pastures. This is the only episode I have watched multiple times. I really hope you invite them to boot camp. Your guidance and mentorship could truly save Beth from burnout and from going beyond her ability to care for the donkeys.
What a generous and kind person.

Yes great people out there ❤
The little donkeys are such empathetic creatures. Like a little horsey dog. And what we are doing to them, shipping them for slaughter for China is/has to be THE worst evil I can imagine. Please support Beth. If you have a problem, take it up with those who commit the evil. She is doing all she can to save these precious souls. And please support equine rescue! If she were truly a hoarder, would she be adopting them out??? COme on people. THINK!
Its pretty obvious that Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue really need so much help, my heart goes out to them. The fact that its probably more difficult to find that special home for them than horses. Its a more specialised re homing issue. They are doing an amazing job under the circumstances.
This episode was amazing and I was so very impressed. Worried about the amount of donkeys and the lack of people to help out, but I'm sure they will find a way that balances it all out. I've joined their Face Book and will continue to follow their progress!!!
That was very enlightening to watch. She definitely has a lot of donkey's. She is very dedicated to those donkey's and takes very good care of them from what I could see. 😊
Until I started following Horse Plus I had no idea how many donkeys there are in this country.
Great Organization. Thank you for all their hard work to save so many. I agree they need more adoption events.
Horse Plus you have introduced us to another awesome person. So glad she is part of the mentoring program. Welcome to the family❤
Once you've been to an auction that doesn't care, you will be scarred for life! It never leaves you, the horrors you see people capable of against animals! The only way I would ever go back to one is if I knew I could save some!
Whenever we leave house,we turn on classical music for our dog, kiki. Our chix even enjoy music in summer.
There is also Fletcher Farms Amarillo in Texas that's a draft horse rescue, they have also rescued and relocated other equines too. Maybe you can also partner with them, we (I'm helping Julie to hopefully get this set up, she's so busy) are trying to get a direct buy or surrender system set up so the horses won't endure a trip to Texas on a kill or livestock buyers truck, and Fletcher Farms Amarillo can save money for vet care by doing this. They are also working with Vets who have PTSD. They are also a full circle of life because they have had to do the last act of kindness after rescuing a horse.

I can't even tell you how much I appreciate this donkey rescue. We are so similar to them. leaning in with love.
Have you ever thought of a day camp or weekend camp for 6-10 people to educate on donkey care or ownership? Also, maybe bring in a few volunteers to just handle the donkeys. Out west, there are donkey races, and many older hikers have donkeys to carry their packs. Also, they pull the manure cart and a small buggy. Donkeys really enjoy "helping" around the home place. All of these organizations are doing fantastic jobs. Good luck choosing a "winner." They are all winners.
You've never heard of donkeys and music? Oh My Gosh! Tawnee! I've always played music for my animals. Smooth jazz, smooth symphonies and even classical for mares in foal. It calms them! Just like it calms humans. Light airy ambient music. Even something like Dan Gibson's sounds of nature. Music is just as good for the animals as it is for humans.

So much love, concern and work going on to every animal there. Grown so fast to such numbers is a shock to see meaning far too many animals in dia straits, is daunting. No we can't save them all but emotionally it takes a huge toll on the societies trying their upper most to have to learn how to say no. Oh I do not envy anyone placed in this situation. I am pleased to hear that the board members are aware and can be strong enough to do their best for staff and the animals. Thank you Tawnee and Jason for bringing us along to meet these beautiful souls do such great efforts to help save and rehome these precious animals. ❤

So many donkeys! And it’s such a beautiful place. Beth is truly exceptional with her vision. Thank you for taking us along! The farrier also is doing such amazing work. I really hope they can get more support to sustain for many, many years to come. I totally understand it’s really hard to turn animals in need down - or to watch them being loaded off to slaughter. I am not sure if I could take it in without breaking down crying. I just wish like Tawnee said that the whole system could change!
It’s defiantly a problem for all rescues. Who takes over if something happens to us.

Wow! Two comments: we didn’t get to hear any donkeys braying! Also I am interested in learning more about where donkey products are most in demand, why kill buyers are buying them. Teach your donkeys go in harness and to pull wagons and that way they can get a home that can give them some gentle work as donkeys can have fun as they are pack animals and they are very very strong and it gives them a job as I had a donkey that use to get out of his paddock because he was bored and after that he was broken in to harness and to carry a pack with food for humans and animals as I use to go bush with my horses and I took my donkey with me too and he was not stubborn he wanted to work and he was very well looked after and he is now retired he is not in good health from very old age and he is under a vet as my best friend now has my donkey as I don’t have any where to keep him and I found out that he will be put to sleep soon if he doesn’t improve with his health

And help around the rescue with chores!😂😂😂
This is for the rescue organizations. Why don't you contact the closest training school for farriers and ask them to bring their classes out to you one day a month. Or maybe twice a month? Your farrier could still do her specialized care. It would help their training and your work load. And you could feed them their lunch and even ask them to advertise for volunteers. I think you have a heavy load and I would love to see you have help. I think you could even ask the training carriers to volunteer and form a committee to come up with options to raise money. Good luck..

What a fun and inspiratiinal organization with a truly beautiful facility! They specialize donkey rescue but also accept horsessoalready are networking which is great But their expertise in getting mini donkeys and horsesadopted really stood out for me since the auctions seem to be overflowing with minis.
Over 200 acres....really great property.....However, I think to control liability or other contingency, I would consider splitting off the Rescue to a limited number of acres. So just in case sometime in the future if the owner does become ill or cannot work, her homestead will not be part of the rescue, creditors will not be going after ALL her assets. I'm not sure exactly how this is done, but there are folks who understand what I mean and can advise her how to handle preparations for such a contingency. God bless her, she is a strong woman with a great heart. ❤❤❤

The clinical definition of hoarding requires you to not get rid of whatever. I adopted out 8 between Aug when we started and Dec 2021 when we had about 30 in the rescue, 25 in 2022 when the numbers were growing but less than 200, and nearly 30 so far this year with 4 upcoming appointments this month and roughly 10 applications in review by our Director of Adoptions. When she approves them, they make an appointment and come get donkeys that match what they want. Of these nearly 300 animals on site, less than 20 are my own and a few are residents we keep for tours and events. The rest are adoptable. Some come starved and take a few months to get back in shape, those with awful feet maybe a yr, and there are a lot of jacks we cycle through to get castrated. We based 300 off the amount of property and money available. Do we plan to decrease numbers, yes. Are we hoarding, hardly.

Wow! They are doing great work, but badly need more help. More people, more money more everything - it cant be allowed to Fail because they are so needed - its sad - these are also beautiful animals - they are just not wanted like horses. The BLM was always something terrible. I myself have always hated how they work - they were always there for the ranchers who wanted horse free Land. They used to block off the water for them deliberatly, then hunted them down so brutally - horrible company. Just so many very bad policies, nothing good for the equines! Bad Lobbyists deciding everything, well the money dictated.

Can you tell us what can a donkey do on a farm?
Not understanding people saying this rescue is hoarding. They deal primarily with donkeys with messed up feet that take a long time to rehab... think about how long it takes to adopt out a horse to just be a pasture pet, then realize that is all they deal with but with donkeys. There just isnt as much demand for them as a rideable horse! Therfore going to take longer to adopt out. Yes, they do need to learn to say no more often, but in no way does this look like hoarding. Overall a very hard rescue to be, but they are new and constantly learning from the sounds of it!

Did anyone else find the 2 minute & 21 second intro a bit too long?
I'm so glad that Horse Plus visited Peaceful Pastures because they have a problem with hoarding. I've seen hoarding happen so many times with animal rescues where people involved believe that they are the only ones that can give an animal what it needs only to get bogged down, burned out, and broke. Either boundaries are put in place so they can continue their initial mission of actual rescue, or they spend all of their time many and effort on just caring for the ones they can't emotionally let go of. I hope that they can stay focused on their mission of saving lives.

Maverickspirit: Hoarders do not adopt out animals. We adopted out nearly 60 equines since we started in Aug 2021. We have several appointments this month to adopt more out and several applications in review. I hardly think this defines hoarding. In fact, because we take in those with the worst neglect and abuse, it takes longer to even get them ready to adopt. That requires they stay longer. We aren’t going to adopt out equines who aren’t ready physically or emotionally. The number 300 doesn’t automatically mean hoarding. Perhaps if you learned more about our organization, you would be more qualified to render an opinion.
Tawnee can you please tell us more about blm horses
It's great, but seriously 300 donkeys? My God. This can easily go terribly wrong. This is borderline animal hoarding. Even when her own team says that she can't seem to let them get adopted. Yes, it's terrible what these animals have to go through, but you can't save them all. You are one person.
