Robi! you blessed me with that story of the slaves throwing acorns into the grave of the master. I love Black history but I never heard that story. I love learning about the daily acts of rebellion slaves did because they are often not mentioned leaving ppl to think slaves either ran away or remained docile. The history of poisoning their masters, self-defense, spiritual lives, etc. are rarely shared.

What a great tour! Andrew and Robi have such a great rapport and the amount of history they manage to communicate without it turning into a lecture is amazing! Not forgetting James with the great skills on the camera too! :D

Another great one, guys! I always learn something fascinating from your videos and the visuals are awesome, too. I have to say, I love old houses about as much as anyone can, but often when we go on tours my husband and I have a conversation afterwards about how the tour guide seemed to feel duty-bound to canonize the original builder of the house. Even here up north where people weren't enslaved, it's a bit cringey. Am I interested in who built it? Yeah. Do I think he/she/they were saints who blessed us with their lives just because they had a ton of money and built a big fancy house (more often than not to show up some rival across town's big fancy house)? Eh, not so much. What makes old buildings so fascinating is all the humanity and history that they've witnessed, not just the credentials of the few rich people who built them. I love that you always expand on the basics of a location and give us a view of that humanity. Cheers!

It's interesting to hear the history from folks who are dedicated to real history and history of all people. I doubt I'll have the opportunity to travel so far, so this video is really expanding my view.

Robi and Andrew, thank you for the outstanding bike tour on the Mississippi River Levee. Your video helped me to revisit my early childhood days. Having been raised in Shrewsbury, your tour gave me a chance to view the sights of yesteryear. My parents, relatives, and many friends are all buried in Ross Church Cemetery(Parapet Cemetery). As a college student, I worked in the Levee Lounge Restaurant at Marsalis Mansion. I grew up with Yvette and Ellis Marsalis, Jr. May you continue to produce informative and quality videos. Y'all are amazing. Thank you. I brought my French copain to New Orleans because it was on his hit list of must see places in the US. He also was under the delusion that everybody spoke French-LOL. We spent a day doing a plantation tour which included Oak Alley & Nottoway. I remember being so disappointed in the lack of information about the slave labor that made all of this possible back in the day. Being raised in the South I was too polite to ask about this omission or make any kind of issue. Alain was totally ignorant on the issue of slavery in the US, so it was hard to discuss any of this with him. Your inclusion of this important part of the history of this area is a much needed addition to the romantic stories of Plantation Life which in no way resemble the true history. Please keep doing what you are doing.

Great job , guys!!! Loved the scenary and the brain food...I rented a bike and rode the levy in Algiers but it was nothing like this. I did relish in the fact that you can get a to go cup at The Crown and Anchor Bar in Algiers and take it with you on your bike ride...now that is a bike ride....when you get to St. Francisville , we will need to see lots of pics of the the two of you growing up and I hope we get to meet some of your kin folks...🎯💯👍🥇🏆🙌🦄

Love that y’all rode bikes to take in all thats missed by driving. In Iowa we have a ride called “The Registers Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa” or ragbrai started by the Des Moines news group The Register... it starts on the Missouri river and ends on the Mississippi with a different route each year, and is the largest touring ride in the world always in the last full week of July. 400-500 miles on average and 7 days long with stops nightly in town who bid for the 10-20k rider ride to stop there. I have completed 15 so I understand the importance of taking in natural beauty by bike! Great video as always, can’t wait for the next episode. Sending venmo love! Y’all need to get rode bikes instead of the cross trainers, even though you’re flat down there, it would help Robi with the long ride lol! Thanks again guys!

Awesome. We did a small part of this trail walking. We took the streetcar to Carrollton. Had lunch there. Then walked back to the Zoo area along the river trail. It was a great walk. Great to see where this trail went, further up. Thanks to you, Robi and James.

This series is going to be amazing! As a new New Orleanian, I love seeing the places close that I can explore. I’d love to connect with Andrew more and see what I can do to be a guide in this city!

Somehow I knew Robi would be tired 😜. So would I lol. I guess those motorized bikes can be turned on and off when you want so you can cycle and when tired turn the motor on.

A friend and I took this same ride in 1980. We went as far as the spillway and had numerous flat tires while biking on the levee as there was no bike path there at the time, only a white shell or dirt trail.

The Oak Tree and The Acorn story is priceless! Thank You for that Robi.

We were just in New Orleans for a few days. Got away from the tourist areas a few times and really enjoyed that much more. Next time we will take this levee ride. Also I would like to go to the areas south of the city like Venice or Grand Isle. Maybe you can do a video on the history of those areas.

I love you both! Robi you really love your spirit, your spirit transmits through the screen and makes me want to visit. You add so much hot sauce to this channel! I am touched by the information you bring us, thank you so much! And just to add, I would rather hear uncomfortable details about slavery than from Hollywood-en movies backed from people who control the agenda on how the stories of history are told. Great narrative about taking action to make a change aligning to your relaying of historic details. The development of Cancer Alley is disgusting and tells the story about money grubbing land grabbers who don't get that we belong to the Earth-the Earth does not belong to us!!! They have been taking over the world, Corporation's over people's lives makes Government a sham!

I really appreciate your insight into what each plantation offers the visitor. I will be visiting New Orleans again in March 2022. I already have my Amtrak ticket! I have tentatively planned to take a plantation tour. I haven't decided which one yet. Your comments will help me decide. I will be staying in Kenner for a few nights while in the area to visit plantations. Is there a good bike rental shop nearby?

Is the Mississippi River trail complete? Can I ride from say, Wisconsin to New Orleans??

@@FreeToursbyFootHQ Super. Thanks. I want to rent a bike for my upcoming trip and I hate those bixi bikes, they're no good for tall people (seat is too short). You guys have pretty much got New Orleans covered with your videos (you even went to Algier's Point), except maybe one on Vieux Métarie, with those opulent houses (though I prefer the Garden District).

why was rum making never a thing in Louisiana?

Wow that was great!! I was in NOLA for Christmas in 2014. We spent Christmas eve at the SanFransisco Plantation. Is it possible to see that one? Also will you be mentioning Bonfires on the Mississippi for Christmas. Loves your channel and will be sending money when I get back to work from covid. As I am in Canada unfortunately there is no way to visit now.😔

Somebody get Robi an EBike...

People who had slaves were rich -- not that many rich folks though -- most of the population in the south were farmers and could barely get by - let alone buying a slave -- so don't judge the people of the south because of a few misguided rich dudes --- and - not all of them were bad ---- from the proud state of Arkansas --- descendant of poor white farmers -- did you know there were also white slaves -- and some freed black men was given some land - they became rich and bought themselves slaves ----

Glossing over slave owners made my stomach and headache 🤕. GROSS!!!!

Wow❤ if I would have known of your channel last year before going to New Orleans . I would sure visit some of the places outside New Orleans . ❤ visit Oak Alley Plantation.
