My dad retired from GM and is gone now and i would give anything if i had listened and payed more attention and stored the wealth of knowledge he shared with me but i was young and dumb at the time. I do remember a bit of how they determined the viscosity and hydrodynamic oil film per engine application by measuring the resistance through the oil film somehow, it was many yrs ago and there was more to it than i can remember. To bad we dont have a way to store the knowledge that passes with them.

Also wanted to say ive re-used the cam plates and from my experience theres not enough of an enternal leak to notice a difference in oil pressure. I had a buddy was dodge guy and i think it was the LA engines that had a plate that covered the oil galley plugs and if he didnt have plugs he was just throw the plate on. If you think about all the internal places in engines that can leak it doesnt seam that important, the LS oil pump itself probably leaks a good amount where it meshes with the crank, the bearing and lifters clearances and the passage around the disributor on a sbc, thinking about all that im just not to worried about that cam plate, but if you can improve it why not but i ususally dont wait on one if i dont have one on hand.

Hey Steven. Sounds like you had a great dad. The people that did that engineering years ago we're crazy smart. They didn't have this computer sitting in front of them to give them all that info. They figured it out on their own. We appreciate you watching and commenting. Jerry and Emily

My understanding of shimming an LS oil pump was the bypass valve internal to the pump- to increase the max oil pressure.
@UglyTruckExperience
Ай бұрын
Hello Enginerd. That is what I think when people mention shimming the pump also, which does work. Most of our comments and questions are asking about the centering of it but refer to it as shimming it. Words.. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily

Luv you guys', all very good info. I've built many LS's over the years, even if they were junkyard engines there are a few things that I would address just as cheap insurance. Upgrade rocker trunnions', most times a new set of LS6 valve springs and seals, new timing set and a new oil pump and O ring. I never have shimmed the gearotor set when installing a pump and never had a failure. I do have a set of the plastic seal spacers that I use when installing the end covers and I always use a Trick Flow timing chain damper kit, just seems to be a lot of slop even in a new LS timing chain. Great explanation of setting up the covers with the engine upright. I always do it but never put 2 and 2 together on the crank deflection. Thanks.

Hey Ken. Thanks for watching. I'm going to give the timing chain damper a try on the next one that we do for ourselves. Keep your comments coming. We always enjoy them. Jerry

Thanks David! With stock exhaust manifolds and freer flowing exhaust, it should be around 350-360 HP.

Love the content, answered questions I’ve had floating around in my head. Would love to hear your thoughts on a poor man’s lq9 by putting 862/706 heads on an lq4?
@shadowopsairman1583
Ай бұрын
It increases compression and torque some but to go further put true flat tops in
@UglyTruckExperience
Ай бұрын
I think the 862 and the 706 are smaller valve heads. They do flow great even though and I have just gone with the 317's so I didn't have to deal with anything but the stock tune. I would love to try it though. Let us know if you end up doing it and how it works out. Jerry and Emily
Jerry, I put A Billet Dumb Bell in mine because it makes me sleep better knowing that the $25.00 part is billet and I was convinced by the interwebs that it was mandatory. Billet dumbbell on a 210,000 mile refresh...I guess I am the dumb bell lol. Another great T Shirt idea. I build my LS with UTX. Don't forget Get wired with UTX shirts coming soon....
@UglyTruckExperience

Hey Scott. I have installed the billet myself and I really do think that I slept better knowing how shiny it was. We have to get on top of the T-shirts. Looking for better quality shirt and then will go wild with the design's. Thanks again. Jerry

With a double roller timing chain. Is it required to run a aftermarket timing chain COVER for clearance
@UglyTruckExperience
16 күн бұрын
We haven't used a double roller, but from what I understand, you can grind the original cover for clearance. But it looks like you'll also need to shim everything else to line up correctly. Here's a thread I found on it. ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/1411506-double-roller-timing-chain-clearance-question.html Someone there may be able to answer your questions better than we can. Hope this helps! --Emily and Jerry
Cleared up a whole lot of things about front and rear covers, dogbones and oil pan things to check. More of Emily's usual excellent camera work. But I sure was cringing when you took the Channel-Locks to that crank snout.
@UglyTruckExperience
Ай бұрын
Thanks so much, Rick! I knew someone would call Jerry out for the Channel Locks on the crank! 😆 --Emily
When going from dished piston to flat top your reason to increase compression. * more power * lq4-lq9 then you said we are staying 317 so no changes in tune. Unless u are using a lq9 ecm. You'll need a tune anyway. . So why not do it right put a set of 243-799 be done.
@UglyTruckExperience
Ай бұрын
Hello NPG. The LQ9 with 317 heads is a stock tune. We send the computer out to the guy who does our computers. He will download a stock tune for a LQ9 and a 4L80 transmission and it will run perfectly without a custom tune. If we change the engine from a stock configuration, like adding more compression with different heads, a custom tune would be needed. I also need this truck to run on 87 octane regular fuel. Jerry
Hello y'all, what would be the pros and cons of up grading a ly6 with 408 stoker? Would you do this move?
@UglyTruckExperience
Ай бұрын
That 408 would be pretty cool. Not the cheapest thing to do. That ly6 puts out 364 Hp stock. You can put a LQ9 cam in it and get around 440 horsepower. We have a Ly6 also that I think we are going to go the different cam route. Let us know what you end up doing. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
