That;'s so tragic. They don't get to scam customers anymore.
It’s a shady practice, update your menus & be honest with people. They’re just mad they can’t psychologically fool people with a lower menu price anymore knowing damn well it’s not the total price.
“We’re not being greedy, we just want to mislead our customers with a shell game so they don’t know the real price” 😂
This is probably the only latest California law that I support. That restaurant owner wants to get more money from the customer, but he doesn't want the clear price to scare away customers.
I don't even eat out anymore. So I don't care.

We don’t eat out anymore, but we do care, because we miss it! We haven’t been able to afford it in years, I shouldn’t say can’t afford, because I guess we can, but the money is much better spent on non frivolous things now.
“They say we’ll just put it in bill, but it’s not that simple” - yet they are able to calculate it every time a customer is charged their bill. Sounds simple enough
pizza antica at santana row charged a 20% junk fee on top of my bill. i thought about not tipping, but i gave a tip and won't be coming back again
What is so bad about transparency? It’s only bad if you want to be shady and rip people off when they least expect it. This law needs to be implemented everywhere. Even taxes should be included. A price is a price. No more surprises.
I have a hidden service fee of double the restaurant's hidden service fee. So I ain't paying more than what was advertised. Dirty liars.
Putting the fees up front in the price and letting customers know before ordering seems better than being shady hiding the fees in tiny little print that most people don't even notice until the sticker shock when the bill comes. What exactly are those fees paying for? That needs to be disclosed too and people need to see how the money is actually being spent.....penny for penny. The only businesses that will hurt are those small businesses as usual when most can barely afford pay roll for a skeleton crew of employees. Many small businesses don't even pay minimum wages and they aren't penalized, only employees losing their jobs.
Adding surcharges (5% Healthy SF + 18-20% service fee) = dishonesty scams. Those SF restaurant owners failed to mention that during 2008-2013 they were pocketing ALL the 5% Healthy SF fee. Owners kept the money collected, meant for employees. That fraud was exposed and owners were fined in 2013. The revised laws allows owners to keep any leftover money not spent on employee healthcare. In 2022, only 40% was spent on employee healthcare, so owners got to keep 60% of those funds ($14 million). Shady SF restaurant owners force customers to pay for their employees health insurance, then get to keep more than half of the money collected. But still demand to continue gouging customers with junk fees (tips not included).
I remember first time moving to SF, you would get a restaurant bill and they added a percentage to pay for their health insurance. They need to put it on their doors, website so we know before we go there.
$7.50 a taco is the real crime
The health mandate fee doesn't even help most servers and cooks. It's very hard to access that $ as a server/cook.
Restaurant in Mission district is like having con gee soup 😂
Why does every person in San Francisco interviewed for the news sound like the hippy teacher from Beavis and Butthead?
Aaaahh, THE POWER OF ALMIGHTY MONEY🤮🤮😂😂😂😂
A "Premium Taco" - that's a scam right there.

Good. Raise your prices. I don't care.

Good. Go to your kitchen and make some. Then hand it out.
Avoid Che Fico!
The cost of doing business in California is a nightmare. Fees or top of fees on top of costs on top of costs. Sadly as a business owner you find a way to adapt, you shut down to move to another state, or you close business to work a regular job.
change the biz model! make things affordable instead of trying to capitalize everything! this is why a chinese ev can be $10k while a tesla is $40k! this is 1 of the root cause of the problem why we are failing!
LMAO @ buying tacos from some white guy and not from one of the 28,000 skilled Mexican proprietors bringing their hometown recipes with them to California, and who would never charge you a junk fee to begin with. Folks, this is a largely victim-enabled issue. Let the Hayes Valley Chads pay for the $12 tacos.
