Missingno Trainers Were My Gaster

Ойындар

You've seen Missingno, you've seen Kabutops skeleton, but have you ever seen a Trainer on the coast of Cinnabar? How did this happen? Why does he have an even bigger, scarier Missingno? Are Missingno trainers some secret class of trainer? And most importantly, what in the hell happened to the music?!?

Q: Where can I find that 'did you know gaming' video?
A: The video is here: • Mew's Origins: A Story...
If you'd rather read about it, you can find that link here; youtuberead.com/watch-ar/mew-...
Q: At 1:00 you mention the Pocket Monster Encylopedia... have you read it? Do you own it?
A: Nah, it's very rare and very expensive. Do You Know Gaming has a copy, and apparently they got it translated by the original translator who localized the first Pokemon, but as far as I'm aware, they've never shared it. (I hope they do someday though. It would be an amazing read).
Q: Wait, how do I catch mew?!?! You never actually explained!
A: The Mew Glitch, or the Ditto Glitch, is fairly simple, you can find it here: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wi...
Q: Wait, if the coast only has like, 5ish missingnos, where are all the others?!
A: See that Mew glitch, right above this question? You can use that to summon other, more exotic missingnos. Some of these are very dangerous, but some are also very fun. I'm particularly fond of the missingno summoned with a special of 192.
Q: Bad Eggs, what?
A: There's a glitch in Gen 2 called the Celebi Egg Glitch. It requires a Bad Clone which is obtained via turning off the power while the game is saving so that you can obtain a pokemon that's missing some of it's data.
This "bad clone" can then alter the data of unhatched eggs through a very elaborate series of steps.
Q: Wait, I'm confused, what does this have to do with Missingno?
A: Oh yeah, so, when you trade with Gen 1 games in Gen 2, you enter something called the "Time Capsule." This Time Machine is supposed to have checks that prevent you from trading Gen 2 pokemon to Gen 1, which would cause a paradox, since Gen 2 pokemon haven't been invented yet.
Bad Clones confuse the time machine, so it stops accurately performing that check, allowing you to send Gen 2 pokemon over to Gen 1.
Q: I wanna go Missingno hunting!!!! Where can I start?
A: I recommend either Bulbapedia or Glitch City's Wiki.
Here's the Glitch City link to the Glitchdex: glitchcity.wiki/GlitchDex
Here's the list of pokemon available via the Time Capsule Exploit, in case you have a Gen 2 game lying around. glitchcity.wiki/Time_Capsule_...
They do have an absurdly detailed breakdown of the "mew glitch" aka "the trainer escape glitch" available here: glitchcity.wiki/Trainer_escap...
But I find the bulbapedia one to be more approachable, since they list the Stats that correspond to each pokemon right there on the page: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wi...
Aaand while I'm at it here's a link to their article on the old man glitch: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wi...
Q: Wait, did I just hear another voice on Spamton?
A: That would be Gibby. You can throw them your [Sweet Sweet Kromer] for more [TERRIFYING VOICES] over on their Kofi ko-fi.com/thegibbous272
Q: Who did that EPIC opening song?
A: That would be Noxide, also known as Vincent Gray. He makes amazing custom audio of all sorts (not just video game covers) and would be delighted to take on your comissions here: ko-fi.com/vgraymusic
Q: Why are you printing all your pokemon from Pokemon Yellow? Do you not own a copy of Pokemon Crystal?
A: I do... but the battery died just as I was about to do that. I know how to change the battery of course, but cracking open a gameboy game takes a while, and I don't have the time for it, (yet!).
Q: I want to join your Patreon and print off those sweet Missingnos, but I can't find your Patreon!

FAQ! Q: 7:13 "chief" isn't a culturally appropriated term! Why you do this?! A: Oh geeze I messed that one up hard. Uh oh! Bad research = bad! Okay so how did this happen? Well basically I only asked 2 questions before doing that part of the video, first "why is the word 'chief' in my Japanese localization? and 2 "will people get mad if I use the word 'chief' a lot?" The first part was "Japan adopted it from us." So that's easy enough, but for the second part the only thing I read was this article right here: "www.insider.com/native-american-offensive-racist-things-2020-1#racial-slurs-are-racist-no-matter-how-antiquated-they-may-be-5" And an article about how "chief" was being removed from business terminology in some settings. For some reason while editing, my tired brain must have jumbled the info up and drawn the wrong conclusion. However! The word "chief", while being reserved for Indian/Native American use, is actually European in origin! Specifically in the Gradual Enfranchisement Act in Canada, "Chief" was established as a legal term to specify which Native American leaders within tribes would be responsible for managing certain duties on the reservations and such. Source 1: www.ictinc.ca/blog/why-are-indigenous-leaders-called-chiefs Source 2: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gradual_Enfranchisement_Act So! That word isn't cultural appropriation, but is apparently still not cool to sling around willy-nilly. I.... definitely should have looked into that further before trying to report on it though. That's on me for doing insufficient research. Sorry about that, I done goofed! Oopsie doopsie!!! Q: Where can I find that 'did you know gaming' video? A: The video is here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6d9rpOQj7SontY.html If you'd rather read about it, you can find that link here; youtuberead.com/watch-ar/mew-s-origs-a-sry-secrets-rums Q: At 1:00 you mention the Pocket Monster Encyclopedia... have you read it? A: The Mew Glitch, or the Ditto Glitch, is fairly simple, you can find it here: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mew_glitch If you're super far in the future, and that link is down but this video is up (???) the steps are: 1. Find a trainer facing up. (the gambler near lavender town, or the trainer near the top of nugget bridge both work). 2. Stand above them, just out of their sight and save the game. 3. Take one step down, into their line of sight and as you do, quickly press START to open the menu. 4. Fly or Teleport away 5. Find a *different* trainer on a different Route to walk toward you. For Mew I recommend the swimmer in Misty's gym. 6. (OPTIONAL) fight a ditto and have it use TRANSFORM on your pokemon. It will copy your Special stat, which will determine the pokemon you get when you return to the trainer you fled from. *do not fight any other pokemon/trainers after the ditto* For MEW you need a pokemon with a special stat of exactly 21. 7. Return to the area you initially fled from and the start menu should open automatically. Close it and catch the pokemon that appears. (If it wasn't a MEW, you either fought the wrong trainer, or had the wrong special). Q: Wait, if the coast only has like, 5ish missingnos, where are all the others?! A: See that Mew glitch, right above this question? You can use that to summon other, more exotic missingnos. Some of these are very dangerous, but some are also very fun. Bad Clones confuse the time machine, so it stops accurately performing that check, allowing you to send Gen 2 pokemon over to Gen 1. Since Missingnos are what happens when the game tries to read pokemon data from a non-pokemon slot, Gen 2 pokemon cause it to read from that corresponding slots. So for example, Kabutops missingno is hex B6. The pokemon in hex B6 for Gen2 is pupitar, so if you trade a pupitar to gen 1, it will be a Kabutop Fossil Missingno. Thus, if a pokemon cannot be caught because encountering it will freeze your game, the Time Capsule glitch becomes one of the only remaining work arounds without a hacking device. Gen 1 and 2’s weird glitches are so iconic. Cuz clearly they were some glaring oversights but it was so interesting to see why they happened and it was so cool they could be used to obtain things like the secret Pokémon Mew that was legit snuck into the games and hidden in the code (and unlike later games could be glitched to obtain unlike arceus (tho now it’s possible w/ a hotspot) and the silver floette from XY).

actually due to the gen 1 prototype leak, we now know that the Chief was supposed to use what we now know as Blaine's design. Blaine had the sprite of a partially bald army guy doing a salute, and this design can still be seen in the game's manual, his concept art and was also reworked into his anime appearance. I guess game freak figured it would be boring to have two gym leaders be army dudes and decided to repurpose the chief's sprite. if you ever read the manual as a kid and wondered why blaine looked different from his sprite then that's why

Yes and no, the word "Missingno" is an error handler the game generates in response to being unable to find the data for the pokemon. For example Mew is "Pokemon Number 151." Since all of these 'glitch pokemon' exist in the spaces without assigned pokemon data, I'd argue they're all 'missingnos' of sorts. But then, there isn't always a strong consensus for pokemon-glitch terminology. For example "the mew glitch" is also called the "trainer escape exploit," "the ditto glitch," "the interrupted trainer battle glitch" etc. Missingno also complicates things by being an actual game-generated name for *some* glitch pokemon but not others. For example the Fossil and Ghost Missingnos share an in-game name with Missingno classic, even though, from a coding perspective, M' Block has more in common with Missingno Classic than any of the fossil/ghost Missingno do. (similar sprite, stats, effects, moves). Since "Missingno" is the game trying to describe pokemon with missing-numbers/data, I choose to use "missingno" to describe all glitch pokemon generated as a result of lacking specific pokemon data. Partially because I can make a normal pokemon a 'glitch' pokemon with illegal moves using certain in-game glitches, so I desire a way to disambiguate.

  • @natnew32

    @natnew32

    2 жыл бұрын

@@HalfBreadChaos Well that's the thing, "Missingno." is the name given to (most) glitch pokemon in between species number 1 and 190. This name was clearly chosen by the devs because... it's a normal name. The ones outside the range were not given this title. Additionally, all of them bar the fossils were all given pokedex number 00. The pokedex number determines stats, starting movepool, sprite, and types, which is why they're all basically the same thing. These pokemon are also allowed to learn moves by TM, HM, and levelup that differs from the others, but... none of them actually learn any moves like that. Fossils I don't know what's going on. 'M by pure chance also has pokedex 00, that's the only reason why they're similar. It has an actual moveset as well. So in this case we have "regular missingno.s" (usually taken as a group, sometimes the individual ones are referred to by their index) and "fossil/ghost missingno.s", which perfectly describe every pokemon named missingno. There's no reason to extend this to all glitch pokemon. Also glitch pokemon are pretty commonly defined as a pokemon with a nonstandard species number, so that last part is irrelevant. There is total consensus on this one, check any resource.

I remember when I was a kid and KZread was a very different place, I found a video of Missingno. being encountered in Red and Blue. It completely boggled my mind. To that point I'd never even considered the possibility of glitch Pokémon. I remember trying a bunch of ridiculous fake guides to try and catch Missingno. myself in FireRed, and of course they didn't work. I ended up learning about all sorts of glitches, and found them super interesting. Not only that, but I was lucky enough to encounter and catch a shiny Pidgey and get Pokérus in Sapphire. All these things really made the Pokémon world seem to have endless possibilities to me back then. Now I've learned all about many of the different glitches and glitch Pokémon throughout the generations. Each of them have really interesting and unique effects. In Generation 3 alone, there's over 65 thousand unique glitch Pokémon, although they all look the same. That's more Pokémon then anyone could ever experience and document in their lifetime. Undertale's lore really gets my mind going just like it did when I was a child, and I think that's really cool.

A glitch Dex would be an amazing series. I remember telling a friend in college about one glitch Pokemon named “Poké Poké”. The sprite was an scrambled amalgamation of Bulbasaur and… the Swimmer trainer class? It looked like it had Terminator eyes and appeared to be running toward you. The damn thing is terrifying.

I normally don't find glitches creepy (although I sure did as a kid) but that music was actually really creepy, especially since it was so unclear what it was & why it was playing. It was like a curse was being let out just from revealing that pokemon. I was super fascinated by glitches & unused content in games as a kid. I spent hours looking for secrets in Diddy Kong Racing because of the unused tracks, the unused space you can glimpse on the track select, the "To be continued." message at the end of Adventure 2, & the spot behind the waterfall where I could swear I glimpsed a secret lobby behind the wall when clipping the camera through it & could swear I remembered hearing the unused roaring dinosaurs track when I sat in a corner by the door. In hindsight, I think I just saw glitchy out-of-bounds visuals & my overactive kid imagination filled in the blanks with something more interesting.

finally, my hours of screwing around with the buggy mess that is gen 1 becomes slightly useful! 2:30 so the trainer fly glitch is actually frame perfect, but it doesn't matter because in gen 1, you can buffer inputs 3:03 missingno jumps the count of the items in the bag up to 127, but that's a huge nitpick, nobody cares. 7:28 if you haven't seen the "explaining missingno's glitchy appearance" video from retro video game mechanics PLEASE watch it, it's fantastic & goes into so much depth. 7:38 god i love glitch pokemon. there's one in yellow that lets you merge pokemon into one with the other's moveset & stats or sprite. very fun. fantastic video, im just nitpicky. hope you're doing well!

  • @HalfBreadChaos

    @HalfBreadChaos

    2 жыл бұрын

Eheh yep, the sentence is "unlike the mew glitch, there are no frame perfect inputs" so the sentence does imply the mew glitch needs frame perfect inputs, but it's such a cluttered sentence I understand the confusion. "127" is also technically "above the item cap of 99" but yeah, I figured I didn't need to be specific since the glitch can be replicated infinitely anyway. Aaaand agreed! The pokemon merge glitch is my favorite missingno *by far.* If I ever revisit missingno on my channel, you can bet Q will be at the top of the list.
