I think the force of the water rushing in over the top of the roadway, vortices and turbulence during the sinking and maybe a suction effect doomed the workers on the bridge. I have no idea where the found the bodies, but I think it would have been extremely difficult to exit the vehicle until the road stopped sinking, and then once you exited you'd likely get spun in so directions as the turbulence slowly subsided. If you got the wind knocked out of you be the impact then you'd have basically air to find your way from 40 feet below to the surface.

That’s amazing. Still got the plastic bollards in the tray on the truck! They just gently rode the roadway down. I’m very much enjoying your posts about this. I’m a 66 year old woman, not remotely interested in construction, but interested in how they will clear this from the river. Fascinating.

My company built that truck. The arrow board on the back which would be upright is crushed. The truck was put in service a year ago. None of the missing were in this truck when bridge went down.

One of the 2 survivors was in this truck. The Crash Truck was was at the lowest point out of all trucks. I read that it wasn’t in the water as deep as the other trucks. The driver was able to get out of this truck because it had manual windows. He was able to roll down his window to get out. It is a miracle that anyone survived this catastrophe.

@@jeffreymagyar3990 That is a barrier vehicle, and would have been parked upstream of the worksite. It is used as a barrier for errant vehicles. The vehicle is bigger and has the crash cushion apparatus on the back, Barrier vehicles in a static closure like the one they had, are unmanned. They are there to get hit instead of people. The people dying is a damn shame. I have done that work on bridges. Bridges, flyovers. and transitions are scary to work on, because there is nowhere to run. scottjohnson4241 was correct, about no one being in the truck. That truck looked pretty new. It is a total now. May be able to cannibalize parts for another just like it. The attenuator on the back can be salvaged by the company for another truck. That is a damn shame about the truck. New equipment is hard to come by, because it usually is replaced every 15 to 30 years. I worked for the state of California on the road, and I was driving a 20 year old water truck, that had 40,000 miles on it, but had like 75,000 hours on it.

That is the Fallow truck it’s the last in the convoy because it has the Scorpion Barricade to stop and deflect cars from hitting the convoy.

I wouldn't have thought that the truck would be damaged from hitting the water, but rather from all the debris coming down and hitting the truck. Apparently not though.

I'm not a spring chicken at 51 I drive semi over the road. Seeing the construction trucks go in the water that night broke me up. Seeing them come out is just as tough. I didn't think I would be effected the way I am.

I did that work for 10 years for two different states. It hurts to see brother workers end like that. It pains the heart. I first saw that I cried.

Jeff is basically my KZread Dad, my old man was a structural engineer building nuclear plants back in the late 70s and working on them until the late 90s. I was born in 1996 and now have a few years of heavy firehose drinking mechanical/nuclear experience. I also understand Electrical engineering to a good degree and update schematics as needed. But Jeff is my KZread Dad giving me the Operating Experience (OE) needed to improve my own knowledge and understanding, fantastic guy I tell ya!

I’m a retired union carpenter that worked my last 8 yrs of my career in bucks but I worked on bridges for a few years doing whalers and honch boards I still miss the comradely.

The history channel has a DVD/Blu-ray about that topic. Called worlds toughest fixes some scenes will give you vertigo while sitting on your couch. Rigging a Guinness book of world records TV antenna tower will make you nauseous too. Think there is a part two also

@@davidsignor7931 that is why engineers get paid the big bucks to figure out the best way for each situation... and not just use charges to blow it up, where they'd still need pick up the pieces afterward. IOW, certain ways require more divers (more dangerous) and more time later. (more money)

That truck is not normally manned .It's used to protect the work crew from active traffic .

And it's weird how a major bridge collapse with loss of life can have just two degrees of separation from an incident of alleged criminal sexual misconduct by a Kennedy, himself a nephew of a sitting US Senator!

The truck fell fairly upright. The suspension absorbed most of the impact. The bridge was cushioned by the impact of the water.

@@jeffostroff Even if it wouldn't absorb that much, we have seen big jumps in rallying, and if we look for off-road rallying you would see huge jumps. Amateurs rallying with production cars and truck even in off road rallye events show how production vehicles that land on their feet can endure some jumps or falls without any visible damage. A truck that is normally used as a protective barrier to protect the crew might be heavily reinforced.

Thanks again Jeff - FYI, at 16:04 hours Baltimore time they finally lifted two of the damaged containers off the bow of the Dali, as seen on the StreamTime camera - I can't wait to see the tilted stack be removed so they can work on the bridge structure!

Totally love your engineering perspective of the whole works. What you say all makes sense and I love that the challenges of recovery debris from the water is being documented and your input just makes it all the more interesting. Have watched the other clips and not an engineer but blind Freddy should have had the warning bells going in the over pass collapse. Thank you and keep it coming.

Jeff, I love your videos Been watching since the condo collapse. That truck is a Attenuator truck and it protects the workers, it probably was the last vehicle into the water. The truck was actually a brand new Kenworth sold by a good friend of mine to J Tech who builds and mounts the attenuator.

You said there were corrugated sheet metal panels pulled up from the site of the bridge collapse - I was a highway engineer in bridge maintenance and those panels are probably the heavy duty type called stay in place forms: the panels are placed on top of the steel deck beams and the steel reinforcing bars and concrete are then placed and poured on top. They're more expensive than plywood falsework but they save in the equipment rental, labor and disposal costs of removing the plywood.

Welcome aboard!

The vertical members shown going up and down on Cashman's barge are called "spuds"; they hold the barge in position while it works. The corrugated metal is bridge decking which is the horizontal form for the poured concrete beneath the asphalt of the roadway.

I could see clearly now why those workers died. There were hundreds of tons of steel truss collapsing on top of the crew, making their escape very hard or impossible. It was a soft landing for anything made of steel, but not for people, adding to that the shock of getting immersed unexpectedly in cold sea water. Mad respect for those who perished doing their jobs until their last minute, hope their families get compensation for their material loss, as human loss can never be made up for

Congrats to those divers that hooked the cables to that. You guys ROCK! That must have been tough to pull off. Hopefully some of the guys remains are still inside and can be returned to their families for closure.

Before you pointed out the Kennedy estate I looked at that house and said "those people think they're better than everybody else". LOL!

reports in the comments say the truck was a lease and less than a year old, so basically looks pristine. It's only used for the crash protection and road cones.

Jeff, if you look closely enough. The very last vehicle to enter the water looks like it may have launched a little. That would make a lot of sense, considering the magnitude and force of the bridge hitting the water on one end, and the other end snaps loose, creating like a catapult. Just a thought Ron

If you want a good example of cars riding down a falling bridge with little or no damage, check out the i35w collapse. Many cars were intact on the concrete above the water. I think the area of the concrete acts to prevent high velocity in the fall, as well as provided a cushioning effect upon hitting the water.

I have been watching for reporting to confirm that this video of the work truck is authentic since you posted it. I live in Baltimore and, believe me, this would have been of great interest locally and on the comprehensive local coverage of the bridge collapse if it were real. I am not a conspiracy person. In fact that is why I look for multiple sources when I see something that I question. I don't think it's a good idea to post pictures until you can say for sure where they came from.

And the truck went in backwards with a large crash attenuator attached to the back end, designed to prevent damage to the truck and passengers in the event of a collision from traffic. I've been doing crash reconstruction for 36 years.

LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH GOOD WEATHER...

The truck that was recovered was the last one in the convoy of vehicles because of the bumper contraption at the rear of it. The corrugated material was the stuff the roadway was laid on. It is much thicker than regular corrugated sheet for roofing, etc.

Some commenters to this video seem to be saying that Chessie raised that truck. Fact: The first thing that Chessie did on this site was to lift a section of the truss. Also the second, and as of today the third. Chessie was NOT used to lift this truck, or any other truck, from the water.

Fascinating how many moving parts there are in dismantling the bridge. How do they know where to cut the beams so the remaining parts don’t topple over like dominoes? I’m amazed at how quickly they are getting it done. The department store heiress is so chic and mod! Love the Kennedy connection.

Jeff, Not being a civil engineer I am not familiar with how the road deck is attached to the superstructure. I find it interesting how the road deck is so cleanly separated from the superstructure. It's also curious as to how little damage has been done to the superstructure. Bob

There's probably more damage to the truck than you can see from that angle of the video. It took a 200 foot drop to the water. That's why most of the dead will be found to have died from trauma, not drowning. The trusses are the easy part, they're sticking out of the water. The road deck is now embedded in the bottom of the river.

I think the containers are leaning in and are being supported. They are not an immediate hazard. Eventually obviously, they will get around to them.

It is not, beyond a "shadow" of a doubt, it is a "reasonable doubt.

As good as the truck looked, I wouldn't be surprised if suspension pieces are bent and twisted at least a bit. Pretty neat to see Chessie up close like that, you can see how much capacity she has left there.

What about the failure of the auxiliary systems? The missing 2mins from the VDR? The appt of William Delbagno(FBI) the day before the collapse? The harbor-pilots names still being withheld? All these coincidences at once! Yet, the gullible mob is still on board with their mommy government!🤣

When they build a new bridge will they start from the point that still stands or will they demolish the rest of the bridge

Is it possible that the truck recovery was not made public because there could be a body in it. All the windows appeared to be intact.

I got my scuba certificate in ft Lauderdale and my check out dive was on the mercedes cargo ship the deck was at 80 ft.

Looks like that city truck is not damaged at all. Surprise to see it as nothing happened.

Is there any other video🎥 of the other construction trucks was there 5 or 8 trucks? I haven't seen the other trucks. Was there any other construction equipment?

I mean, it's not wind that blows out candles, it's wind _shear_ that does.

Obviously the construction vehicles had their emergency brake enabled to keep them from sliding forward. It seems that the roadway was separated from the truss as they both fell. The roadway was not propelled into the water via the free fall of the trusses.

I imagine the road section of the bridge would be trickier to recover from the bottom.
