Missing Hiker's Boot found 18 years after She Went Missing. What Happened to Michelle Vanek?

#missinghiker
#unsolvedmysteries
Hello everyone In today's video we will be discussing the disappearance of Michelle Vanek a mother of 4 and was 35 years old when she went missing in September of 2005. Her Disappearance led to the largest search and rescue effort in Colorados history with more than 800 volunteers assisting.
The Vail Mountain Rescue Group was instrumental in keeping this case in the publics eye.
Despite finding the boot, that was positively identified as Michelle’s boot, they still haven't been able to find her.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle, her family and friends and all the search and rescue teams that have continued to search for her🙏
Special Thank You and shout out to Scott Beebe and all the team members of The Vail Mountain Rescue Group 🙏🙏

Hiking is no joke, I hiked to the Colorado River once, Grand Canyon, for 3 days, then along the river then back up a different trail. People get life-flighted out of there regularly from complete exhaustion.

Yeah I went down the Hermit Trail, through the bottom then up the Bright Angel and it took 4 days. One Day there was a tent on a hill in the bottom set up at around high noon (when Temp was 100 F.) and it was someone with heat stroke waiting for a rescue copter. That place is no joke.

Sorry but there's something off about this. The very first thing you are taught/told in the Army/Military you stay with your "Battle Buddy".I don't understand how anyone doesn't know if you go hiking, climbing, kayaking or just walking or anything else with another person/team you should ALWAYS stay together(unless in extreme unforseen circumstances, like if they are immobile and you're getting help) Basically you come in together, you leave together. Plus considering Eric was a much more experienced hiker then her and she already told him she was having a hard time, at the very least thats extremely bad decision making/judgment for him to abandon her just so he could get to the top. I seriously can't imagine anyone in Eric's shoes decided to do that... Which is why I said something is off with his story. I don't wanna say what I can't help thinking about. Cause I don't know what happened but at the very least theres some liability on Eric's part just for his piss poor decisions. I mean c'mon, a strong athlete experienced hiker/outdoorsman abandoning an inexperienced 35yr old woman and a freakin mother of 4 no less just so you can get to the top. All for another notch on his belt resulted in the loss of her life and the total destruction of her children's and family lives. I'm sorry for repeating myself, but the more I think about the angrier I get.

There is no point in summiting if the person i'm with cannot, if i have made 38 one more isn't going to make my story any better, but losing a friend on the mountain will tarnish all those memories forever.

Two of my friends and I were backpacking in the Alleghenies and rescued a day hiker who was lost. We were in a wilderness area in late November with hard to follow leaf covered trails with poorly maintained blazes. Took us seven hours to hike five miles. Often we had to split up to find the next blaze. We met a National Guard rescue team on the way out the next morning. We ripped her a new one for hiking without a compass or map and only wearing a hoodie and carrying a single chocolate bar.

I read an article on this when they found the shoe. There's a key event in this story that he left out of this video. Their plan was to summit then take the easier trail back down and not go back down the harder trial they had just come from. When they split, he told her to cross a rock field to the other trail and he would meet her on the other side, on the other trail on his way back down. She never made it across the rock field to the other trail.

Never separate when you, as an advanced hiker, are acting as guide with a newbie. In this instance, Eric should have abandoned his summit attempt and headed down with Michelle. If, indeed, he couldn’t check his ego and go back down, he should have told her to stay put for 45 minutes while he made the summit and returned to descend with her. Bad judgment for a supposedly experienced hiker. The group leader is always responsible for the decisions, not those who are inexperienced.

So an experienced hiker left a rookie hiker who was suffering from altitude sickness go down a mountain all by herself. A condition he was well aware considering he was an experienced hiker. Knowing damn well the dangers of altitude sickness he still let her go off on her own? Nah that logic doesn’t make sense to any experienced mountain climber, hiker or LEO with brains. She would have been disoriented and in a terrible state of mind. Not enough digging was done.

A couple commenters delicately mentioned the possibility that there was "foul play" involved but most repeat the story as if it is fact when it all comes from Eric. There is no proof of anything without her body. It's just too weird that one boot was found in an extremely difficult area to get to, one that necessitated "bushwhacking."

It's weird that he took her on a more difficult route even though she was a novice. The only information about what transpired that day comes from him. Confusion on the trails put them on the more difficult trail? That claim itself seems weird - why would he continue up on a trail that was probably way above her level of ability when they could have just turned around and gone down? For me, Eric's story doesn't go down very easily.
