I love how Michelle said to the rest of the contests that they're all beautiful. No outgoing title holder before or after her has done it since. She seems so down to earth and someone you really would want to meet.

4th Runner-up: Mississippi was sent to Miss International 1988 she placed 1st Runner-up. 2nd Runner-up: Georgia was sent to Miss Asia Pacific 1988 and she was a semi-finalist, 1st Runner-up: California was sent to Miss World 1988 she placed in the Top 10.

@@robinquinc329 You have good taste! I would have placed Gretchen 1st runner-up at Miss Universe. I thought Miss Sweden was very overrated. Angela was unstoppable. No one was going to beat her.

Does anyone notice that as Miss Texas is announced as the new Miss USA, there are 3 other former Miss USA on stage handing her the flowers , and her sash, and all of them from the great state of Texas. 4 Miss USA from Texas in one place.

A Note for IMG - the previous crowns for Miss USA and Miss Universe are the best. Go back to the original iconic symbols of beauty.

Little did she knew that when she competes in the 1988 miss universe, her “beauty” will only be side tracked by the beauties from asia. If only miss california wins, with that exotic latina and asian looks, she could be a strong contender and perhaps outsmarted the miss thailand winner. You judges in the miss usa were so bitched, wrong choice to send this texan.

Courtney, like Michelle Royer and Christy Fichtner before her, won the preliminaries at their respective Miss Universe pageants only to be sidetracked by someone else on finals night.

Matthew Manint I agree, 1987 had some of the most beautiful top 10s, in the case of 87 top 11. Some of the best music was included throughout the pageant that year too. My personal favorite was Nevada, Tammy Perkins. Michelle Royer was very sweet too.

Courtney Gibbs is one of the most beautiful Miss USA ever.

Turns out GuyRex had the franchise for California that year too and Miss California and Courtney actually trained together under GuyRex and they took the top two spots in the pageant. Such a shame they became too successful as they didn’t hold onto the franchises for long after 1989.

Incredible record! Too bad I wasn’t born back then, I think I would’ve felt the magnitude and accomplishment of the Texas Org. and pageant!

I liked Courtney Gibbs and think she got robbed at Miss Universe. California was smart but plain Jane looking. Georgia attractive but my God she went overboard with the makeup. Florida and Mississippi cute but not Universe material.

I always believed and still do that if Miss California, Diana Magana, had won Miss USA that she would have placed in the top 5 at Miss Universe and could even have possibly won. The top 5 that year all had dark hair and she fit that mood more than Courtney did. Although, I still think that Courtney should have won Miss Universe.

Agree. I did not like Courtney Gibbs, she didn't do well at Miss Universe. I think it was rigged by GuyRex in 88 and 89!!! I really didn't like California either!! Courtney acted aa if she knew she was going to win.. My leaast favorite of the 5 in a row Miss USA's!!!

Never realized how gawdy the fashions were in those days. Oy Vey!

Actually.. Back to back to back to back,ultimately 1989, also. That made 5 in a row from Texas. Guy Rex Productions produced those winners. Richard Guy and Rex Holt of El Paso were the Pageant Kings of the mid-lateb 1980's.

I thought. Miss Georgia was a drag queen at first and also this is the 2nd consecutive time that the 1st runner up we're Hispanic, 1987' runner up was Dominican American and 1988 was Mexican American

The first runner up in 1987, Miss Florida-USA, Clotilde Helen Cabrera, was Cuban American, not Dominican.

Miss Georgia-USA was actually my favorite. I thought that she just went a little heavy on the eye shadow. I never saw what the big deal was with Courtney.

Agrew.. The rhinestone Star Crowns were the prettiest. The Mikimoto Crowns are ugly and there are cheap knockoff imitations all over theinternet for $25.00. The Diamond nexus crowns were not pretty either and the DIC crystal crowns were awful. They looked like plastic fork hndlea glued to a headband.

I think the Miss Universe organization needs to hire a new stylist for the Miss Universe pageants. Miss USA 1987, looks youthful and beautiful here. At Miss Universe she looked aged and not so pretty. USA's biggest downfall at Miss Universe are their choices in evening gowns.

Miss USA 1985 through 1989 had their gowns for Miss USA and Miss Universe custom made by their state directors Guy Rex. They tried to stay with the tried and true.That meant that they tried to keep the Universe gown close to the USA gown. Miss USA 1986, Christy Fichtner's gown was made of $450 a yard material and according to her directors would have retailed for $10,000. Michelle's USA gown was made of $4.00 a yard material. The pageant back then didn't really have a stylist. Miss USA 1990, Carole Gist wore a $10,000 Bob Mackie gown. Sadly, none of them placed first in gown or better yet won.
