    I am still furious about Emma. Fire was her THING. She's a hot tempered girl and it just kills her personality how they didn't use it. I mean sure, some things cannot be put in the film adaption, but really? Emma is the girl on fire -.-

    I'm a Brit and most of Asa's lines were awkward for me-especially in during the beginning when I wasn't used to it but I was especially unnerved with Jacob's dad's American accent-because Chris O'Dowd is Irish and it just really threw me! :')

    I feel like Eva Green was just the perfect Alma Peregrine. I also pictured her older, and shorter, and maybe less beautiful lol. But Eva was fantastic. Loved her. (also: why did they ruin Enoch's character? he was annoying in the movie, and he is my favorite in the first book)

    My friends who haven't read the book loved the movie and came out so happy and hyped out the theater.... Me on the other hand, could not even pretend. I literally reached a point were I was like "can a hollow like, come out of the screen and take MY eyes out so I can stop watching this?" LIKE SERIOUSLY WHAT WAS UP WITH THE LAST 50 MINUTES OF THE MOVIE?!. I had so much faith in Tim and the fact that the first hour was pretty close to the book (acting aside), I just really don't know what happened!. I'm dissapointed (once more) with another book to movie adaptation. I tend to not care that much about the changes in adaptations like, I get them and I'm able to put things aside and be like "the book is the book and the movie is the movie" but is it too much to ask to get a decent adaptation? :(

    Oh man don't even get me started on the Percy Jackson movies. Listen, I'm a t.v. and movies major and I struggled so much through the class that taught us how to "adapt" a book. They basically told us that, unless it was a very popular book, you could do whatever the hell you wanted with it and write a script that has the "heart" of the book and justify it by saying it was "losely based on"...But as a book lover this just felt like complete bs to me :/

  • @dawnriddler

    finally someone said it..the book is fantastic and the movie was just made boring, the "adaptation" just didn't make sense, because the whole relationship between jacob and emma was based on her powers and they've changed that! -_-

    (SPOILERS DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN/WATCHED THE FILM) I was satisfied with it and feel that the creepiness of it came across well. I just couldn't get past Olive and Emma being swapped. Also I liked the ending but the whole point is that Miss Peregrine is trapped in bird form because she's injured so how could they do Hollow City?

    I don't think they are going to do a sequel--the movie seemed pretty self contained to me. There wouldn't have been as much point in changing the entire second half if they were going to do another movie.

    They aren't going to make Hollow City. What I got from the movie (or what I can remember from it) is that they smushed all three books into one, and I hate it when they do that bc so much plot was missed! One of my favourite parts of the first two books is when they meet those gypsies and befriend them and I was waiting for it in the movie and it never happened!

  • @EllaIngram
    @EllaIngram7 жыл бұрын

    Why did they swap Emma and Olive's peculiar powers around? Like I get that it doesn't change the plot at all, it's not the worst thing that could happen in a book-to-movie adaptation, but it just seems kinda pointless to me. Like, what was wrong with Emma having fire powers and Olive being lighter than air? What was the point in changing it?

  • @ren217

    Ella Ingram I personally think the change of powers really did matter in the film, if their original powers were retained, Olive and Emma's roles would have had different influence, there were details that made sense in the book but would have to be conveyed differently in the movie like the underwater scenes, and also a lot of added ones like the kids utilizing the ship to go after those wights, really the changes made a lot a sense to me :D

    yea that bothered me too...I mean the power swap wasn't that big and I enjoyed it but I just want to know why. My only conclusion was so they could do that boat scene.

  • @ZoeHewittHosting

    @ZoeHewittHosting

    My only theory about this is since Emma is the love interest they decided fire was too "scary" and needed something sexier/more gentle and that's why they changed the peculiarities around.

  • @lanafitzgerald544

    @lanafitzgerald544

    I think they did it because aesthetically, book Olive's power looks better on screen and they wanted to use that power as a means to incorporate the raising of the ship scene etc. And Emma's the bigger character so it made sense for her to have it

    Library of Souls will be called library of eyeballs. And honestly the darn eyeball thing and the thing with the hollows in the second half just ruined the movie for me. Up until that point I was liking it as a book to movie adaptation. But the eyeballs! Ugh the eyeballs!!

    I fell like I am one in a few people who really didnt enjoy the movie adaptation. While I didn't mind something I just felt it while it was beautifully shot. The story and acting was lacking major. The power switch made no sense to me like it didn't add or take away so why do it?? The ending was stupid especially if they plan on making a sequel..which I doubt they will..how can they, they strayed so far from the books at the ending that Hollow City wouldn't make sense at all. I think if I didn't read the book I would have enjoyed the movie a bit more, but as a huge fan of the series it was a let down.

    Totally agree with everything you said. The acting was off straight from the start. I was actually angry when watching the movie, especially because the set the trailer up to look so much like the books. The power switch I feel Tim Burton did only so he could do the boat scene, which was visually beautiful but added nothing to the story. Also skeletons?! WHY?!

    I didn't mind Emma and Olive switching roles at all! Olive isn't how I imagined her at all but I loved her character and her and Enoch's little relationship thing it was so cute! Also the island was exactly how I pictures it and like you, I am so glad they kept in Worm and McDirty and the whole rapping scene. There were just so many great and funny moments in the film. I'm not sure how they are going to do Hollow City and Library of Souls after that ending but it will be interesting to watch none the less.

    Am I the only one who think that Asa's acting was awkward? Especially the scene where Abe died, and he was just like "okay, my grandpa died." I don't want to being rude or something but I've a lot of good expectation for him to figure Jacob. His acting in Ender's Game was awesome. The scene where Jake and Emma fight a hollowgast in their house and Emma just took her shoes off in order to save them both with flying and then when they back to the underwater ship, her shoes back😂 The ending is so different from the book but I still love it, in my opinion Tim Burton make it to be more exciting, a lot of humor, and climax ending.

    Jelke Lenaerts I don't think that's completely true--when movies like "The Hunger Games" and "Twilight" were made, the sequels were guaranteed. Even with the recent absolute bust that the "Divergent" series turned out to be, they completed the movie series with the final one as a straight-to-video release. While you're right that actors in what studios hope will be franchises are automatically signed for multi-picture deals, some are a foregone conclusion. The way "Miss Peregrine's" was made it had little to do with the books to the point that any sequels will have to be nearly original pieces themselves (vs being adapted from the books) since the movie was so drastically different from the storyline we were given.

    I just watched this film today and I loved the first part but the second half seemed off.... the wights acting was awful and I didn't quite understand why there where skeletons battling candyfloss covered hollows.... but the Horace was great and I loved the actor! He was so posh and epic but I think the kids should have had a bigger part. They should have called the move " miss peregrines sassy home for Emma and Jake...ob. And enoch. Oh and sometimes olive."

    Personally, I thought the movie overall as a whole was a GREAT movie. Was it a perfect adaption? Nah. Was there scenes I missed? Yes. I missed a lot of scenes and I was confused. The eyeball scenes were DISGUSTING, I was so confused but it was a good kind of confused. The only thing I actually hated was how much of a jerk Jacob's dad was. I don't think the scene where the kids showed him their powers would've been able to happen because of how horrible he was. I don't remember him being like that in the books at all. It's like no wonder Jacob wanted to stay... The ending was good despite the weirdness and I was happy Abe was alive but it was a little confusing. But it was also pretty funny. "I joined the Navy - DON'T ASK." Overall it was a good movie. I really enjoyed it and it's made me decide I'm gonna reread the book. And I loved Sam L. Jackson as Baron, he was so funny and yet pretty frightening too. I thought for a second "Is he going to turn into Nick Fury?" Nope. Full on psychopath and it was awesome.

I watched it today and when I saw the 20th century logo I got shivers, the boat with Jake and his dad 😂 the house was just how I imagined it,when Jake thought he was doing the magic! Ava Green was amazing!! Emma's and James interaction where so good, Enoch dolls were so good,the loop reset was just how I imagined it.Victor was so upsetting. Underwater scene just how I imagined it.Barren Vs Mrs peregrine was so good,the call so sad! I thought someone was going to slip on the roof. After the boat it got so different with the skeleton and with Abe,I didn't like him coming back,The hollows was so good, I don't understand how they are going to make Hollow city and library of souls because of what happens in the first book,but love it everywhere

    Jesse I totally agree with everything you said!! The beginning of the movie was amazing, and I was so happy with how it stuck so closely to the book and was aesthetically creepy af! I was totally not expecting the scene with victor to be how it was. The last section however also felt really off to me, like it lost it's momentum and didn't fit in with the tone of the rest of the movie. Also I didn't really like how they said what year it was in the present, 2016, cause that just makes the movie hard to stay timeless. For example I feel like if I watch this movie again in 5 years, and then hear "January 2016", the movie is going to feel so old. But I still really enjoyed the movie! It was so visually pleasing and had me always on the edge of my seat!!! Also Miss P's sassy personality was everything 👌

    Time travel is a pain in the butt. I think, among all the problems I had with the movie, the biggest one was that by keeping his grandfather alive, Jacob negated the reason that he had to go to Wales in the first place. He cancelled out the event that started him on this whole journey.

    I totally agree! Me and my two besties all read the books together and we went to see it as soon as it came out and as upset as I was when I first saw the commercials and how they had seemingly screwed everything up, I ADORED the movie. Every change that was made fit perfectly. Do I like the books better? Duh. But I don't think there is a single thing that I disliked about the movie which is amazing because I have never, NEVER actually loved a movie that was made for a book that I love. Every switch, every deviation was made so smoothly and so perfectly and they just like, meshed and it was amazing. It was just amazing. 😍😄

    SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BELOW: Okay so there was really only one thing I really really really disliked and it was one part of the hollow fight scene at the carnival thing. I didn't actually dislike the actual fighting bit, like I actually quite liked how the peculiar kids plan played out, and how the kids threw things at the hollows so they could see them HOWEVER, the music in the background really REALLY bothered me. It was like a mix of pop and house music and am I the ONLY one who recognized the beat drop, where the music built up and then the wight says something along the lines of "What are you doing, attack them!" and then the beat drops like NONO I really disliked that. I feel like the music is really important, especially in a spooky/paranormal movie like this one and it just did not work to have this music in the background of this fight scene. I also liked the Tim Burton cameo, but the music was a big bother for me in this scene.

    I wanted the shack scene from the book soooooo bad. I'm talking about when two characters are hiding from a Hollow in a shack filled with sheep and the sheep are ripped to shreds. The screams and smell in the book was so terrifying that I wanted to experience that fear again in this movie adaptation

    So I got addicted to the MPHFPC series about a year ago and got many people in my class addicted as well, so we all convinced our teacher to allow us to read it as a WHOLE class and take us to watch the movie the day it came out! So basically: half of my class read the full series, some only read the first book. AND I found that reading the whole series and only reading the first book really changes the perspective. By the half point of the movie (when they start going off-the-page) my class was basically almost too confused to pay attention while the other was completely devouring all of it. I, personally, came to the movie totally open-minded as well and was in full on tears at the end. I always never really thought that the "switch" was gonna be a bad thing, and kinda figured that making everyone a little younger gave a more creepy feel (like a little girl holding a bolder? creepy as heck), but what I REALLY hated was that they took out Emma and Abe's relationship. That was such a big part on WHY it took Jacob so long to FINALLYYY kiss her in the end. The acting at times also just made me super uncomfortable when where it seemed almost robotic and UGH i also just really wanted a Ransom cameo too:(( BUTTT i still love the movie and it took me a long while just to figure out what I didn't really like about the movie because by the end, my mind was just crowded with all the good thingsXD (ALSO: I didn't hate the Enoch and Olive relationship because i felt like that it was kinda just a fill-in for Hugh and Fiona's relationship that they took out)

    Oh my goodness, everything you said about the film was spot on to how I felt while watching it! There was definitely something that felt a little bit off with Barron's scenes, almost as if they always felt more comedic than frightening so I could never really take him seriously.

    I too liked the movie, but I feel there were some big plot holes at the end... I mean if Jake stayed in January 2016 (thanks to the London loop) wasn´t he out of time?? I mean wouldn´t there be two Jakes? Did the Jake of the past disappear? Was a whole new time line constructed? What about returning to Florida? Did he just call home and said he was in freaking London? Did I miss something that explained this?

    I pretty much agree with you everything here. I really liked not the very begging, but the parts with the house. But when it came to the Hollows I was expecting something a little different I guess. The only things that bugged me were a lot of the stuff that happened after the loop was destroyed, I dunno if it's just because I've read and loved all of the books, but I just found it a bit weird. Oh well, all and all it was pretty alright, by the way I loved hearing someone else's thoughts on it! :)

    just watched it not as bad as I thought. the Emma and olive peculiarity swap does annoy me because I love how Emma saves him with fire powers. everything was great. Enoch was stand out for me and Jacobs dad. I wished they got in to the Emma and Abe thing more and the ending had some cliffhanger aspect to it. apart from that it was great

    Anyone else really confused by the ending? Would someone be able to explain to me how Jacob got back to the boat in time because I didn't really get it, and Emma cut him off! It also kinda bothered me how in the movie he completely forgot about his family after running off, in the book he at least wrote them a note

  • @BlakeTheBookEater

    Your observations are on point! But I think a lot of the changes are bc Burton didn't want to get attached to a series, so they made it a standalone...at least that's what it felt like to me :/

    i kind of hated its beginning though. I believe they rushed it. like here is a lonely guy called jacob and 40 sec later booom his grandpa is dead and left him a message . Isn't it sooooo typical? like i found it really creepy. talkin bout creeepy - emma's eyes they were huge and i didnt like they swapped her powers . kind of ruined her murderous look in her eye character.

    I don't remember that scene well (since I read the book some time ago )but in the book there was i think a scene when they all from the distance watch their home get destroyed by bomb & they just realise that everything they had is gone. Also I would love to see that all running around they had from book. I loved to see Enoch as an older child because he is a darker character. I didn't particularly enjoy Olive's character. We had such a strong females in the book. Movie Olive looked naïve & she relied on ppl too much

    Just finished the book and I loved it. Luckily I already own the 2nd one so I can get right on that one. I had to-read listed Miss Peregrine's in 2014 but only now got around to reading it 😅 I did end up seeing the movie first and I gotta tell ya, me and my friend were so confused about many things especially near the ending. Pretty much after the boat setting off to sail, the movie almost changed genre for me. It was so bizarre and especially now that I've read the book the ending bothers me so much. For me Jacob struggling to part with his dad is an important scene for example. Great review!
