As someone who has read the book and loved it, i have to say, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children should NOT EVER be a family movie. The book was SO DARK. And that's what I love about it. Enoch's peculiarity is extremely messed up, but in the context of the book, it works. This should have been a Tim Burton circa 1990s movie, not his new stuff.

Cameron Cummins I completely agree! Everything about the tone of the movie was completely wrong. Especially the bright colors and the way they made the scary stuff seem funny.

it's beautifully dark, it was never supposed to be a children movie/book tbh. I love Enoch's peculiarity because it's so disturbing yet fascinating. it really shows how it changed who he was. I love Enoch so much

I actually really enjoyed this film and it didn't feel like they were going for shock value at all, but more of flipping everything from it's norm. Like what should creep you out, is actually cute. Or death/skeletons were actually used to save lives. And I like that they were casual with their gifts instead of superhero like because to them, their peculiarities are normal. I think you missed the whole point of the film and you don't know Tim Burton very well. Cause with him, darkness, death, creepy... is fun and just a part of life. : )

  • @ursaminor9780

I agree with a lot of this. I thought the time-loop element was too confusing, the acting was all over the place, and the last 5 minutes could have made a sequel. As much as I disliked it though, my sister, who read and loved the books, HATED it. On the ride home from the theater, I got an earful about incorrect ages, power switches, traits given to wrong characters, and the misguided villain design. The visuals, I think, were the only consistently positive element. It's a shame when studios forget to make fans a priority.

Your comments on the family friendliness if this film made me excited that it might have more in common with the books than i thought. 🙋 I have a question about Embargoes. Would you please explain how they work, and especially how you find out when it's lifted. Is this information given out by the studio? I would appreciate your knowledge on the topic =] 🤓

From someone whose read the books, this movie did a pretty good job with the basics of what the book is about. The characters were pretty accurate, aside from switching two characters around, and the story, minus a few things that, thankfully were left out, was pretty accurate as well. Absolutely loved Eva Green as Miss Peregrine, and, having only seen Asa in Enders Game, he wasn't bad either. Samuel L. Jackson brought some life into a character that was, honestly, scarier in the movie than in the book. As for the "shock value" bit, three words READ. THE. BOOK. Tim Burton took what was an already dark story and made it slightly darker, but still entertaining....but then again, that's what Tim Burton does.....(Sweeny Todd, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands,). So, what's the issue here ?

The fight scene with the skeletons was one of my favorites scenes and it was the scene where I had the most problems with (if that makes sense). Like that scene is sooo Tim Burton but the music was off, I was like "this is soooo cool but Tim how in the world would u put this music?? like wtf?". That scene with cool music would have been epic.

I saw the movie yesterday.... And I actually really liked it. I love the bizarreness of it and the nonchalance of the powers... You have to remember that they aren't trained in combat so it's just for everyday use and they have been using them that way since WW2. I think it adds a realness to how peculiar it is.

I read this book in middle school and instantly fell in love with it, I was so excited for the movie, I am now in college and when I saw the trailer I instantly felt that the movie wasn't gonna be good. I'm disappointed because I feel like I've waited so long for this and this book doesn't deserve a movie like this. I remember going to watch Me Before You and seeing the trailer before the movie and cringing through the whole thing due to how different from the book it was. I haven't seen this movie yet but I feel like I will be very disappointed as a fan of the books and as a moviegoer.

I have not been truly happy with a Tim Burton live action film since Big Fish, And this one, just from the poster I could tell it was not a step in the right direction. Burton needs to take some time off, and when he comes back, he needs a tiny budget, so he can no longer hide behind lavish special effects and production value.

I was a bit excited for this but feared it would suffer from what you mentioned. Now I know not to see it! 😂 Can you rate it out of 10???

I agree with what you said about the Enoch character. Some of the things he did were so twisted it made me wonder why it was in this movie and the twisted things he did served no purpose to the plot whatsoever. Overall I thought the movie was good though.

Oh God.. I'm so worried now because those are my favorite books and I have a feeling they will either change it completely that I don't recognize it anymore or that they'll try and squeeze an entire trilogy into two hours a la "A Series of Unfortunate Events". The books are bizarre as well, but in a good way, plus they're dark.. I don't know what the marketing team was thinking with those bright and happy colours on the posters... Ugh... why can they make straight adaptations for Harry Potter & Hunger Games but not for this.. it bothers the sh*t out of me. Well, I'm still looking forward to seeing this movie, let's just hope they capture the spirit of the novels. Does it set up a sequel or is it just like a straight forward happy ending sort of thing? If so I'm bummed already.

I'm late to these books, just finished them, and I really liked them - still looking forward to watching the movie though. I respect your opinion, to me movies and books are personal :)

This movie was AMAZING! But I have to agree that children under 13 shouldn't watch it unless they want to. There were these 9 year olds whimpering and crying during the movie because they were scared.

What led Tim Burton to this level? Dark Shadows.

personally after Sweeney Todd I think Tim Burton has been on a downward spiral, I thought Alice and wonderland was really poor and almost walked out of the showing because I was so bored. His projects have become predictable and have lost that heart tugging weirdness that Edward Scissor Hands had that I loved. Ever since I've just avoided all Tim Burton stuff just to avoid disappointment. there is nothing he creates anymore that I can't imagine for myself

Great review as always, Grace! Sounds kind of disappointing, but I think I'll still see this for Ella Purnell who is wonderful and for Tim Burton because I loved Alice Through the Looking Glass.

yikes. emma and jacob's "romance" was one of the worst things about the movie lmao. i wouldn't even call it a romance. it was just like "awkward. awkward. awkward. awkward..... BOOM KISSING SCENE!"

Well, I don't even really know... I'm a horror fan, I like some Tim Burton movies, and I like some unusual feelings in movies....and I'm almost 40....should I try, to give this one a chance, or leave it, not to be disappointed again in a Burton movie? :/

Aw :( I just watched it yesterday and I actually liked it. Was kind of scary for kids, but I liked the bizarre vibe it gave off. Fit with the theme of peculiarity, and of course, Tim Burton is a wild card. He is capable of anything with that imagination of his. Maybe it's just not for everyone? or perhaps I just missed something haha. I will be reading the Novel to see what it's really about.
