kate shindle is amazing! love her in legally blonde

I thought initially that N. Carolina should have won, but then I met Kat Schindle at an event in the Gay-borhood in West Hollywood, CA. She was very approachable, intentional, and intelligent...needless to say, I changed my mind. Kate became one of my favorites Miss America's. She spoke eloquently about AIDS research. I lost a host of friends and relatives from the dis-ease. She tore down the door to change perceptions and provided access to this once very taboo subject.

Wow. I’m from West Hollywood. Where did you meet her and was it during her reign? Her answers here proved how kind she is

Thank you for posting this! Even for those of us who own the tapes (yes - VHS tapes!) we can't watch them. My boys literally just saw me at Miss America for the first time! Thank you!!

I remember this back in 1997. This is the first Miss America that i watched on TV

Absolutely. NBC was pure gold and made the event feel like the Oscars.

One of the weaker productions for a pretty big era for the pageant. The hosts weren’t a good fit. Kate’s final answer and speaking about HIV patients was phenomenal. Had my vote then. North Carolina would have won any other year but Kate was unbeatable based on her interview and personality and spark.

The production numbers that year were weak.

Why do most of these have no sound?

They all have sound. These are all VHS to DVD conversion so do not expect HD sound. Some people complain of a buzzing sound too, it depends if using plain computer speakers, or bluetooth or wireless. Can't fix it, sorry.

It was ambiguous really. She said "it's very sad" but they cut it so we never knew if she meant sad it was the only state allowing gay marriage because they all should or sad that THEY allowed it.

I disagree with her but at least she was honest in her feelings. She did not give a politically correct/expedient answer.

@@davidgoodliff4486 if I remember correctly, she was upset because she said something about it being sad that it was illegal or something to that effect and they edited it in a way that made it controversial for the show.

I think it was a same-sex marriage in her state. I'm gay but my Church and my KOf C members are against Seme sex marriage and Transgenders are against God and Jesus so I was told before my meeting that my bf is not very happy with them for upsetting me.
