I really like the G & G program, but now I wonder why M & D did not win gold. G & G were repeating their core elements. This was really innovative. And not misssteps. (Sergej had a small mistake).

This really highlights what is wrong with the current system from a creativity and fan perspective. They were free here to skate with unmatched passion to the music instead of skating to a rule book. I dont need every move to be a "level 4". This program was unique and difficult and drama galore. I loved it.

They were great here, and I do believe they were underscored, but I can see why the judges gave the win to G&G. During the throws and lifts, Dmitriev almost halts to a dead stop in contrast to Grinkov who never stops his momentum, that makes what he does look a lot more effortless. M&D aren't always in sync with each other, especially at 4:30, G&G always had perfect timing except for Grinkov singling his double salchow jump. Both pairs had mistakes, but I think what took it over for the judges is that, you knew you were watching a competitive program from M&D, but G&G always gave a performance because they never fail to draw you in and their chemistry was untouchable. Again, this is just my opinion, I think this could've been either pair's win in terms of the technicality, but in terms of just enjoying the performance, G&G has my vote all the way

Actually D&M were in better in unison here than G&G, who were out of sync not only on that jump but on their separate spins. Yet they got one 6.0 on artistry, which should only given to perfect unison. But hey, the sheer fact that we are still debating this almost 30 years later really says something about how incredible both pairs were.

He was looking at her 2-footed double axel (which is a serioud mistake) and his stumble on the footwork, both are clearly evident. Plus, he comes to a dead stop on both throw jumps and they bump into each other on the throw triple twist. Their lifts were also not great. They only had two and only the last rotation of the first one was one-handed, the other one was completely two-handed. They grind into the ice (I mean they are loud!) to get their speed and they don't really extend and stretch out quite like G & G. Yes, they have all these "gumby" postitions that she gets into but that's really it. The rest just seems so laborious compared to G & G and that is why their presentation wasn't nearly as good. To be honest, the only element that was "harder" than G & G's was the sbs triple toe, everyting was either inferior or a wash compared to G & G. G & G has more difficult lifts, did 3 of them to M & D's two, had technically superior throw jumps (he's not coming to a dead stop to heave her into the air and running ot catch up). Plus, they had a unique entry into the throw 2-axel which made it much more difficult. They had a superior split triple twist, no bumping on the way down. Even though he stumbled on the 2 flip, he still landed it on one foot which is less of an error than 2 footing a jump. Of course you can argue the single salchow is an issue but that to me is negated with Dmeitriev's slip in their footwork. So the American judge got it correct.

He stumbed on their side by side footwork and she two footed the 2A, I think that's what opened the door despite G&G having their own technical errors. And in the LP if there's a tie, higher presentation wins. G&Gs skating skills, polish and overall presentation was better even if M&D were more expressive and exciting to watch for the average viewer.

Wow I never knew that about higher pcs winning if it’s a tie because today it’s higher technical score that wins. I think I prefer it being this way ( tech score winning ) because pcs has always been a little bit washy when it comes to judging and is SO subjective. Like interpretation marks can be different for any judge, I personally enjoyed this more than G&G performance wise because this is more my style but someone else might prefer the romantic and slow feeling of G&G. AT least with the technical score, you can’t really lie

Now I understand why they call the 1994 Olympics the Games where they got all the figure skating gold medals wrong. I used to think just Nancy Kerrigan got robbed by Oksana Baiul two-footing and wobbling her way through her LP with no combination until she tacked on a sloppy double toe to another jump ten seconds before her program was over. Now, I can say after 27 years, even as an avid G&G fan, that M&D were robbed. Regardless of "preference" for style, M&D were perfect that night; G&G weren't with two jump errors from Sergei. These scores are a joke as much as G&G getting nearly all 5.9's for technical merit. How awful for M&D....and the sport.

I keep wondering if they had never fallen in love and if it had never become so public, would some results and the attention and love they got from everyone be different? It’s so easy for the judges to get behind someone who has a story coming into the competition, we even see this today in figure skating. Definitely not taking away from their amazing achievements and incredible skating because they were a top team even before the whole love thing, but every time people mentioned them after they got married, it was always about them being in love and THEN about their skating. Not to take away from G&G but I think you’re right. After they got married it was all about them being in love and the judges ( even in today’s figure skating ) love nothing more than a good story to get behind. Just like at the 2002 Olympics with the Chinese pair who came in second. She fell very hard on a throw quad and had to stop in the middle of the program and came back on the ice. Of course I applaud her so much for doing that, it was such a brave move, but the judges went crazy on their marks even though the rest of the program was skated not to their maximum and their PCs was not really effected even though she literally stopped in middle of her program which is an interruption which should effect pcs. As long as you come in with a story or reputation the judges will never let you down

At the time I felt they had the gold medal by a narrow margin. Someone made a laborious YT video showing both FSs side-by-side, concluding G&G won it fair and square, and for a long while I was convinced. When I said so, I was massively spammed! First time ever. M&D's performance looks harder because of what some people call the "circus" elements between the actual elements. While I wouldn't classify it quite like that, the truth is that G&G had the more difficult program. Their lifts were more difficult, the entries into the throw jumps were harder and they did the more difficult death spiral. As for flawless, M/D's errors were perhaps less visible to the audience than G&G's but they were more serious: G&G had 2 errors: Sergei's wobble on the exit from his double flip, and he singled a double Salchow. That's it. Compare that to M/D: She double-footed the double axel, which is less visible to the audience than Sergei's wobble but more serious in terms of judging criteria. On the triple twist they don't get the same height as G&G and she bumps into him. On the throw jump he stops, throws her and then runs to catch up.On the 2 lifts (compared to G&G's 3) there aren't errors but he only lets go on the 3rd rotation in the first lift and she holds onto him the entire 2nd lift - compared to G&G's fully one-handed lifts that are far more difficult. G&G make it look so easy but their overall program was both harder and cleaner. That's why they - deservedly - won the gold.

@@lb4585 M/D's elements weren't harder: Not their lifts, not their death spirals, and they had overall less elements. And they weren't flawless - a 2-footed landing is, in terms of judging criteria, much more serious than a wobble, even if the latter is more visible to the audience. M/D's form is also not flawless - the stop on the throw triple twist, their entry into the death spiral (her leg is bent and her backside is sticking out), for example. Their overall footwork is also less complicated. M/D's performance had a lot of wild elements in the fillers which is why it was so popular with the audience. The judges, though are looking at the actual skating technique. I'm not saying their performance wasn't outstanding; it was. I'm just saying that it's not beyond understanding why G&G took the gold.

Someone suggested Natalia's double axel was two footed but no , it was nice and clean and fast. It was wonderful; too bad despite a bobble G and G are magical and while this was clean the lifts were not as strong as G and G. Definitely had harder jumps both throw and individual but the twist and all the lifts favored G and G. G and G also had better skating skills. But artistically who do you choose? What a wonderful choice. Both teams deserved gold.

Like Hamilton said, hands down the greatest pairs free skate competition ever, just wish M&D would have won. Who could have foreseen Grinkov's death just a year later though. So sad.

She I think brought beauty to this pair. Artur was passion and she complimented him. I read something once that said Artur did not think of her as beautiful as the other Russian girls but I disagree. He had the most beautiful and best partner. I don't watch much pairs skating anymore bc to me no pair will ever be this good.

I didn't like this choreography at all, G&G had better looking positions, and weren't scraping their blades across the ice. As much as I still think they should have won, I see why the judges gave it to Katia and Sergei. There's not much to separate them, but Katia and Sergei had more/more difficult lifts, a more difficult side-by-side spin, more consistent speed throughout. Still, their program didn't have the impact this one had. I still remember seeing this when I was a little kid. The memory isn't as strong for G & G's program, which while very beautiful, was exactly what you'd expect from them. I dunno. I just feel this program was so special in a way very few are.

Yes, but I think that evens everything out. Katia and Sergei had better lifts (everything with one hand, too) and better spins, while Natalia and Artur had one more difficult throw and a harder individual jump. I think the case can be made that the technical content was about equal, but G&G always had more speed and explosiveness to their tricks. I think the results may have been closer if they'd skated in the opposite order, but who knows.

  • @intldawn

That's true but I thought it was clear G& G were better in the short. Each element they did was more precise and was done with more speed than M&D. I would have put them first regardless of the skating order. That performance wasn't being beat that night. Even still, in the short, G&G got 5.6 to 5.9. There was room there--albeit very slim--for M&D to pass them, especially on the technical side. But the long program was different. I felt M&D were better and didn't quite max out on their marks because the leaders were about to skate next. I think it would have been very difficult for any judge to give M&D marks that G&G couldn't possibly beat.
