I always watch the male partner during the throw. Sergei always skated through the throw, as if Ekaterina weighed nothing. He made it look so effortless and natural. Most male pairs skaters come to a dead stop and heave their partner with obviously great exertion. So often, it looks as if the girl weighs a ton and he's using every ounce of his strength to chuck her across the ice. But, not Sergei. Sergei was the quiet one in G&G. He allowed us to focus all of our attention on Ekaterina, because he was a great partner. In my opinion, Sergei is still the best male pair skater ever. And I don't see that changing any time soon. It'll take someone spectacular just to be mentioned in the same paragraph as Sergei.

The best days of figure skating. There was real magic! As an American, have to say there has always been something very special with Russian Figure skating greats that nobody else has matched.

Well. They have special sport schools for talented sportsmen and they are free, unlike, in America and Canada. They don’t go to the ordinary schools like other kids.

Even if he was tall and strong, he was extremely gentle to his wife/ skating partner. They were both completely inseparable.

I read somewhere that he dropped her once - ONCE - in practice and never never never did it again. You can see how he lifts her and sets her down like she's made of glass.

@@CarolanIvey Yes. And Ekaterina Gordeeva once said that the case when Sergei dropped her, brought them closer. Sergey then was very worried about her and their relationship moved to a new level. It was in 1987, before their first Olympics-88.

Yes he is so graceful despite being so tall. Impeccable. I was watching their older performances when she was just 16 and I could see he was even more delicate and gentle with her when she was younger. Which was so refreshing, almost seemed to follow her lead and give her space, very respectfully. Then later on after marriage I could see he got more comfortable with her, almost had a better grip on her, not rough by any means but more firm and confident with his touch with her. I adore.

What a man!!! Easy to fall in love with...

If ever there was an example of 'life's not fair " this is it. Their only crimes were being so in love, their intense practicing resulting in exquisite performances and unmatched artistry. RIP Sergei. Ekaterina was and is still my favorite female skater.

These two were perfection on ice. I remember seeing them for the first time in the 88 Winter Olympics. They were teenagers and so was I. And I was thrilled to see other teens doing incredible things at that time. Marina Zueva created magic with them and it was just breathtaking to watch. It was tragic and heartbreaking for Sergei to die so suddenly. But G&G will forever be one of my favorite pairs skaters and the gold standard to follow.

They were just so beautiful and flawless together. They floated across the ice. Such a Beaty to witness. Definitely my favorite pair on the rink.

I read Sergei said Katia was the driving force for their skating. He was the very best partner she has ever had. He was extraordinary and so supportive of her both physically and emotionally. I hope someday I can meet him in heaven🙏

I feel the word perfect isn't enough to describe this beautiful couple. They were the true definition of soul mates. They were two kids who started a professional relationship, then, a friendship, and then, a romantic relationship. She married her best friend and he married his best friend. And together, their love made another human being..their beautiful daughter, Daria. And tragically, it was taken away. All these years later, it still breaks my heart. But I'm happy that Katia found the strength to continue and go on. God bless.

Ja ich stimme Ihnen voll zu. Sie waren Seelenverwandte. Zuerst Freunde, dann entstand die zauberhafte Liebe, dann ihr herziges Töchterlein. Diese wunderbare Verwandlung von Zuneigung nimmt man beim Zuschauen auf dem Eis wahr. So schade, musste Sergei sterben. Das bricht einen wirklich fast das Herz.

There will never be anyone that could even get close to these 2 talented pairs skaters. Sergei was big and muscular, but was always so gentle when throwing Katya. what a horrible thing him having a major heart attack at 28! I could watch them over and over again. RIP Sergei.

Watching this and reading about him, I didn't know what had happened but such a shock to have a heart attack, especially at such a young age and he was 27 here.

Just loved watching them so much. 😖 My heart broke for her when he died so young. 😓

I love their little interactions before, during and after performances. They’re not physically too intimate but also too intimate at the same time. I don’t know how to describe it.

Every time I watch their videos it is with very mixed emotions: awe and wonder at how amazing they were and unbelievable sadness that the was snatched from this earth when they both had so much more to give. Life just isn’t fair sometimes 😢😢😢❤❤❤

I ❤ these two! The way he "presents" her during the death spiral always gets me. They are magical together. Such a loss when only a year later he was gone. A love like that is rare and such a blessing. Their daughter is living proof of their holy, blessed union.

They were one of my favorite pairs. So graceful. Such a shame she lost the love of her life at such a young age.

Other pair skaters are over-choreographed with too much unnecessary movements that you're left wondering if what you're watching is an acrobatics at circus or figure skating. Yes, it's not east what they do. I commend their skills but Sergei and Ekaterina were just so unique in that they were like poetry on ice. They floated rather than skated. It's amazing how they make it so seamless and soft and effortless. Each one of the shadow of the other. The connection is there that even you, as an audience, feel it. Sergei was a gentle giant who'd hold and lift his wife as if she's a crystal glass that's so delicate. Aah it's just so beautiful!

Yes they were Best Figure Skating.

Зоя очень зря эта мущыка ее ворще нинадо было нипод каким углом очень тяжелая для психики сергея она добивала мгновенно сжымалось сердце а у него сердце больное было ката б тпкоеиему просто нельзя было никпк другую.легкую.может бы и обошлось бы несекрт музыка убивает лечит здесь незорошо подобрана очень внутренности режет

I've never rooted for another Country's athletes liked I did for them. I just simply loved everything about them, and still do. It broke my heart for her when he died. They were so in love. She's on her third marriage. I think she keeps trying to find that love again, and she never will. Their's was a once in a lifetime love story.

Ведь они были под постоянным медицинским контролем,его жалобы на брлитв спине,а причину этой боли не установили,проверить все-бледный был последнее время,а почему,тоже никто не обеспокоился. Несправедливо страшно!

Родина и Зайцев в свое время были первыми величинами, я их в детстве обожала. Время идёт, техника исполнения усложняется. Но пара Гордеева-Гриньков до сих пор эталон красоты и синхронности мирового фигурного катания. Этому прокату 29 лет, но до сих пор меня восхищает. Браво!

My husband went to work and never came home my daughter was 5 years old how do you make them understand they don't her husband died before my husband did u can see her pain but you can't say I know how she is feeling no you don't especially when you got a child with his eyes and you have to tell that child that daddy is gone to heaven you say something with a smile that daddy was such a good person God needed daddy in heaven where he always be around you but you won't be able to see but he can hear you What helped her understand it is I sent her to Catholic school public school was so over. Crowed and I worked for the payroll department in public schools

Yes this was their second Olympic gold. Their first gold they won in 1988

I once heard someone refer to figure skating at the 1994 Olympics as the Olympics where they got every gold medal wrong. I have to agree. I'm a huge G&G fan and was rooting for them back then, but after reviewing their performance here and that of Mishketunik and Dimitriev, I believe M&D should have won because of Sergei's problems in his performance. Although I prefer G&G's style, M&D skated clean.

I noticed Sergei having difficulty breathing and he looked pale lost weight. They should have rested at this point. They made a good deal of money when they turned professional Why oh why nobody even bothered to notice!!!!! Poor Sergei😥 Rest in peace Sergei⛸️💐♥️✝️ We miss you sooo much
