Mishimoto 180 Degree Low Temp Thermostat Info, Install, Testing and Review for the Dodge 392 Hemi

Ойын-сауық

It's finally time to install my first aftermarket engine mod on the 392 Hemi in my 2020 Dodge Challenger 1320. I've had this Mishimoto 180 Degree Thermostat laying around just waiting for me to hit my 10 Second 1/4 Mile with a stock powertrain goal. With that goal achieved, it's now time. In this vid I talk about the thermostat, show the full install, and then do some testing with comparisons to stock thermostat temps. Many people will say a lower temp thermostat is pointless without a tune, well, there's no tune on my car so watch this vid to find out if they're right!

    Your results are interesting and indicate the Challenger cooling system works well. I've had the Mishimoto 180° since 2017, fan settings were adjusted at the same time. After reaching operating temp ECT is 185° almost always regardless if ambient is 40° or 100°. I've seen 190° or 192° a couple times at the end of a run when ambient is high but it's back to 185° before I get back to the pits. Aftermarket tstat quality is not what it once was. 2 failed on the RAM in 18 months, one failed to open enough the other failed open. Finally installed another OE tstat 1.5 years ago. So far so good. The gasket on the RAM failed after about 8 years and the Mishimoto gasket failed after about 5. It's a pain to detect a failing gasket unless one has line of sight to the bottom of the tstat housing or pressure test the system. I keep a spare FelPro gasket on hand now as most new aftermarket gaskets aren't any better than the aftermarket tstats. Great video.

    It's crazy how many people recently have been reporting issues with aftermarket t-stats. This one is still working good for me so far and I've done this thermostat change several times, mostly on my Rams back in the day, and never had issues with them. Maybe this one will last longer since I actually bought it several years ago so hopefully it's from before they really started seeing issues. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Good video, nice testing. I've run a 180 stat for several years now. I tuned my low, mid, high fan settings and this year I made fourteen 1/4mi runs one day in 90deg heat and the coolant temp never went above 192f. I love running a 180deg stat but like you said, gotta pay attention because parts are junk nowadays. My first 180 stat lasted 2 months before it started to stick closed.

  • @Scavenger1320

    @Scavenger1320

    Thanks! I appreciate that. For the scratches it depends on how bad they are. For light scratches, we used to just use rubbing compound back in my body shop days. Little bit of that applied with a microfiber towel and some elbow grease and you'd be surprised what it gets out. If the scratch is through the paint though there's not much you can do other than applying some touch-up paint. It won't be pretty but it'll make scratches less obvious. Only true fix when a scratch is through the paint is to send it to the body shop to get properly sanded down and painted.

    On the 6.4 you can save some time by not pulling the oil cooler hose. They self purge the air through the hose coming into the coolant reservoir. Only the 5.7 need the plug removed until coolant comes out otherwise fill and crank on the 6.4.

I think my camera overheated and shut off during that part but I had both bolts completely out that were holding the housing down and it stayed put. @Scavenger1320 , if you have to do it again, you will know all the tricks. I landed on your video because I have a redeye narrowbody and ordered 305/45R17s with 17x10 wheels and 30mm offset. I didn't want to take a hammer to the wheel well to fit 315/50/17's. How did you feel about the wheel gap, especially with the stock wheels up front? I'm sort of of kicking myself, pulling the trigger on the tires. You're probably purely about the numbers and seem dedicated, I'm looking for a balance of esthetics and performance.

    @@ssgviper7147 I still like to look good but it’s definitely not as high a priority as compared to performance. The 1320 already sits a little higher than most other challengers because of the suspension and I wouldn’t mind that gap being a little smaller, but given what it does for performance I’m good with it. And it makes it a little bit easier loading onto a trailer without scraping lol

    Great video Chris! Not sure about these newer cars, but in older cars the fans were always on when the A/C is on, without it the A/C head pressure goes through the roof. Looking forward to your next test without the A/C on to get a more accurate result. More importantly, I'm really looking forward to your track results. Question: They designed the engine to run at 200+ with 40 weight oil. Are you going to drop to 30 weight in the cooler 180 degree engine for racing? Thanks!

    Honestly, I haven't thought about the oil. That's another topic I still have a lot to learn about. I'm going to have to look into that more. I know another 1320 owner that has a lower temp tstat installed without a tune as well and he's actually in the oil business and a LONG time drag racer. I just might have to check what he thinks on that.

    No issues as of yet. Of course I haven't driven my car much on the street over the past several months either. The code popping issue seems to mainly happen during the winter months when it gets really cold. That's when it takes longer to get fully warmed up and just past the time the computer thinks it should. I know a buddy of mine got this exact same t-stat on his scat when he had it and he did daily drive his car and he only had the code pop up once on a very very cold day here in Dallas. After a couple drive cycles after it warmed up (it never stays cold long here even in the winter), the code went away and never came back. Obviously no failure yet either where the t-stat got stuck closed, but since I have heard of several people having it happen, I just keep the stock t-stat in the trunk just in case since they're so easy to swap.

    Been to MoParty and Legion races since then. I haven't paid extra close attention to it but generally what I've noticed is that while in the staging lanes and waiting to make a pass, it makes no difference at all since the car isn't moving and the fans aren't kicking on any earlier, so the coolant temps basically get to the same level they did with the stock thermostat. After the run though and as the car has been moving the temps do dip down lower than with the stock tstat, so the cooldown period is effectively shorter since it's starting at a lower temp. Plus once you're off the track you can crank up your A/C which will cause the fans to kick on even if the coolant temp is lower than the set temp since the car wants to pull air through the A/C condenser.

  • @davidleslie949

    Did you remove your shutters? If you do have shutters in front of your radiator and condenser or do you just leave them open all the time I'm guessing that way it doesn't restrict any airflow? if you did remove them I don't think it would be that hard to trick the computer into thinking that they're still there because all there is is an actuator motor so if you removed all of the shutters but kept a little motor plugged in to the wiring, the computer would know any different. It would just actuate the shutters normally even though you've already removed them. if you wanted you could run a separate switch that would go into your vehicle in which you could operate your electric fans manually. That way you would never go above 180 Fahrenheit I would guess? As long as it's not 120° outside. I did notices your engine is right stuffed. You have no air movement whatsoever under there if there was any way to have a fan that was running all the time install the V6 hemi fan I think it would move a lot more air but as soon as it hit your firewall, nothing like an oven when you popped open the hood I couldn't believe the temperatures on the inside of your engine. Even if you put 2 carbon fibre hood vents just to let the air out instead of chopping it inside because there's nowhere for it to go you basically built a house and the only way for the hot air to go down and hot air doesn't naturally want to do that, obviously. Just a suggestion, but I think it would be advantageous for you. I was surprised you weren't getting any Knox? Then again, maybe it's not often that it's hot like that outside but there's gotta be a way to poke a few more holes in the fender covers or the wheel wells or something just to let it breathe a bit better. Or if there is some type of insulating wrap that you could at least put around your warm air intake and make it a true cold air intake or some deflectors made out of Thin plastic or something that was light enough for you, so you don't increase the weight but it would definitely keep your temperature colder for the air going in at least. I look inside my RAM 1500 engine Bay, and I could almost smuggle somebody across the border inside there lol. I enjoyed the video I'll be changing my thermostat soon. I ordered one on Amazon. It was $27 Canadian or $20 in A MERICAN. I hope I got the right one. It was made by MOTORAD MOTORAD 416-180 Thermostat. I think I might drain out some coolant and then swap thermostats, I think it would be a lot easier for me anyway and then change the thermostat while parked on an incline. That way the air will just go up naturally overnight to the highest point of the engine being the thermostat cap. No bleeding necessary. I change the coolant not too long ago and I never had any air or air in the system that I'm aware of I just let it sit overnight in my driveway which is about a 35° slope or so and I let gravity be my friend. Peace

    Challengers don't have shutters like the Rams do so that's not an issue at all. Heat is definitely an issue, but this car is mostly used for racing and trust me, not many people are racing with outdoor ambient temps over 100 degrees like it was on that day lol. I do have my air intake ducting wrapping in Thermo-tec heat wrap which definitely helps, as does at least one of the hood vents. Also I removed the under shield to allow more air to flow through as well as my fog lights and my right inner headlight so there's 3 more spots for cooler air to flow into the engine bay and push the hot air out. I've also removed my cowl trim so the entire width at the back of the hood is one big huge vent. Plus I've removed my wheel liners more recently so that opens up the engine bay even more. The only reliable way to get the fans to run at lower temps for my car is really just by tuning it. Some people have just jumped the relay, but that's really only for quicker cool-downs between runs while sitting in the staging lanes. I know there have been people that tried making some kind of custom switch on these Challengers and Chargers but it always ended up through a code.

    From what I understand a Tazer could be used if all you want to do is set the temp the fans come on at, at least I think it can. Otherwise, if you're going to get your pcm unlocked and tuned for that you may as well get a full tune. There's a few good tuners out there, but first would depend where you're located at. I'd go with a local one first so that the tuner can actually tune at your car. If there aren't any local then you'll need to find a good one that does email tunes.
