It is important to mention that Coatlicue's name literally means "snake-skirt", because instead of wearing a grass skirt she had thousands of live rattlesnakes growing out of her thighs. The Aztecs also believed that birth was a spirit-war waged between the mother and the gods, with the prize being the life of the child if the mother won. So every mother in Aztec society was basically automatically assumed to be a badass warrior.

The moon is about 3.5 million meters wide, making its movement since then essentially nothing. Additionally, solar eclipses happen based on mathematics, when the sun, moon and earth align perfectly in their orbits and its shadow falls on the Earth during the day, which has nothing to do with its distance from the Earth. Aztec myths are more grindcore like early Carcass or Napalm Death... I always associated Egyptian mythology with Death Metal, you know, literally the band Nile, and all that dark tombs with mummies and whole culture centered around death. And on just heavy side you got Creeping Death and Powerslave. Meanwhile, Greek is classical. Roman is opera. German is hard rock. Celtic is folk, obviously. Pop music is forever associated with Sweden for me but their mythology?.. Rock opera I guess???

Fun fact: Guadalupe is a Spanish region and an Arab derived word meaning River of Light. The Spaniards in México could not pronounce Coatlaxopeuh (pronounced quatlazupe) in the Nahuatl (Aztec language) and used Guadalupe instead. Our virgin of Guadalupe is probably the most important religious figure in Mexico, but it was inspired on Coatlicue or Tonantzin (Tonantzin meaning "our mother"). Spaniards made us believed virgin of Guadalupe and Coatlicue were the same goddesses so... In theory we never stop loving her

Another explanation that is more historically accurate is that the early Aztecs were nomadic and not treated very kindly. Bearing a grudge, they settle and gain power and proceed to use the Flower Wars to kill their neighbors for religious reasons. The neighbors bear a grudge against the Aztecs for this, and get their revenge by helping the Conquistadors. Moral of the story: be a good neighbor.

In reality, a lot of the natives who sided with the Conquistadors made out like bandits: made honorary members of the Spanish nobility, put in charge of colonial administration, etc. There was already a bloodthirsty system of chattel slavery in place that the Spanish simply re-purposed in defiance of their own laws, but the only new evil they introduced was stamping out the native non-Christian religions. There's a reason the population of South America is overwhelmingly mixed as opposed to a sea of white settlers and small islands of native survivors.

Hear me out, I'm from Mexico. In the Templo Mayor (Major Temple) archaeological zone, the story we were told was pretty much the same, but if anyone cares about some more details, this is it: In Tenochtitlan, two gods were worshipped above all others, which is why the temple has a binary symmetry of red and blue. One was Huitzilopochtli, the god of sun, fire and war, and the one that supposedly led the aztec people in pilgrimage to the Texcoco Lake, where they founded Tenochtitlan and became the mexicas. The other was Tlaloc, the god of rain, storm and thunder. The sacrifices were offered to each one individually, and Tlaloc preferred children to serve him as tlaloques, heavenly children in charge of breaking the vases in which the rain was held. Huitzilopochtli had instead human hearts, and there seemed to be two pairs of gods of the sun and the moon. Huitzilopochtli and Coyolxauhqui, and Tonatiuh (the fifth sun, which appears in our $10 coin) and Metztli (the moon hare), which are like, the same gods, but in different stages of their cycle through the sky. Coyolxauhqui was so pissed when she heard Coatlicue was pregnant that she went to kill her mom alongside the Centzon Huitznahua (The 400 stars of the south. Keep in mind that 400 in náhuatl wasn't meant to be literally 400, but as a way of describing the uncountable; the 400-voiced bird (Centzontle) was known for its many sounds, for example) Huitzilopochtli emerged alongside his living weapon, Xiuhcoatl, the fire serpent, to defend Coatlicue. He defeated the Centzon Huitznahua and his sister. He threw her from the stairs of the temple and she was dismembered in the process. That's why at the stairs of the Templo Mayor, there was the moon stone, a monolith representing the dismembered goddess Coyolxauhqui. The eternal battle continues between Huitzilopochtli, which travels the sky as an eagle (the sun) and then turns into a jaguar to enter the Mictlan (underworld) at night, when the moon and stars would emerge, chasing him forever.

@Mullerornis Well, all mesoamerican gods are pretty much the same ones, but they got kind of mashed up after Tenochtitlán. You see, the aztec people are called aztec because they claimed to come from Aztlán, a place no one knows where is, but speculated to be somewhere in Northern Mexico. When they reached the Texcoco Lake, where they supposedly saw the eagle standing in a cactus eating a snake, they became the Mexica people and ended their pilgrimage. Then they proceeded to grow and conquest almost every culture in Mesoamerica, but left out a few ones on purpose so that they could have "Flowery Wars" which were battles to satisfy the gods. The mexica empire absorbed all other civilizations and time did his thing with language, mythology and culture.

"The primary focus of the Aztec Empire at this point was keeping Huitzilopochtli alive" geez that's a disturbing concept. Imagine if there really was only 1 empire on earth that believed in the real gods and they were the only ones doing the blood sacrifices needed to keep the sun alive. Now I'm imagining some sort of historical fantasy story where after Cortez disrupts the Aztec Empire, the sun starts acting funny- to make it an interesting story he'll make some really obvious signs that the world is about to end, like flickering or lots of eclipses or something- Cortez eventually gets so scared he allows them to perform a few blood sacrifices or maybe a splinter group in one of the provinces manages some, whereupon the sun starts to recover; Cortez and his men as well as the surviving Aztec leadership have to deal with both the political question of allowing blood sacrifices and the theological implications, while within weeks news gets back to Europe where they independently confirmed the same observations, and you see the same debates in Spain and beyond

Correct me if im wrong but, the piramid you claim to have climbed is Templo Mayor and its burried under México City Downtown, is it possible that you might be confused between Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacan?

When i was in the 5th grade we did a project on ancient civilizations and we had three choices Aztecs, Incas and Mayas and 85% of my class choose the Aztecs (probably because of murder which was unheard of in our school of no bulling posters and healthy gross food) i and like 3 other kids choose Incas and like one kid choose the Mayas so some kids had to switch to the Mayas, they looked sad. (on a side note i studied Inca agriculture, mostly terraces and when terraces are every mentioned as a question in class my hand goes up faster then the speed of light and sound combined) I know this comment is way too long but i was looking at the description and i had to mention that i know how it feels to draw a character with different colors (a mudkip) and it was tedious and i had to color it in and the lines didnt work properly with Adobe Draw and i was so mad at the fact i needed to fix it.

I had this idea for a story where basically the Aztec mythos was true and there was this order of... well they're basically Aztec monks, who go around consicrating violent deaths, specifically murders, in the name of keeping the sun alive, a couple of them set up shop in the middle east and use the charnel house it is at the moment to hide the fact they are performing aztec rituals to keep the world running Its basically Percy Jackson+Dark Souls, with Aztec mythology behind it.

Oh! another really interesting thing about this story is that it's mirrored in a set of statues on the templo mayor! there's the colossal coatlicue that Red mentions in the endscroll, but at the BASE of the steps there was also this HUGE round stone called the coyolxauhqui stone! see in some versions of the story there's a lot of emphasis put on the fact that after beheading and dismembering coyolxauhqui, huitzilopochtli tossed her to the bottom of the big mountain where he was born. This is supposed to mirror how actual sacrifices were carried out (when a sacrifice is made, they're tossed to the bottom of the temple steps, and their blood kinda seeps into the grooves of the stone, as coatlicue looks on.
