Mirror Matches: A Necessary Evil

Ойындар

What happens if you break a mirror? Seven years bad luck... what else?
Mirror matches are a hot button topic among the Splatoon community. Their very existence has proven to be quite controversial, with much of the vocal player base indicating that they wish they did not even exist. But is this actually an appropriate way to view them?
In this video, I explain my views on mirror matches and why I believe they facilitate more good than harm, despite what the popular narrative surrounding them requests we believe.
Good to see you! Glad you came by! If you enjoy the video, be sure to like, comment and subscribe, and hit the notification bell to see more content like this!
P.S.: I'm on Team Beach for the Summer Nights Splatfest, but good luck to Team Palace and Team Theme Park, also! May the mirror matches ever be in your favor!

Nintendo made things at least slightly better, where mirror matches have a chance to become conch clashes and you can get conch shells for winning.

My biggest gripe with mirror matches will always be that you get nothing for playing in them. This was an issue in 2, but really came into the limelight in 3 with instances like Team Sour, Team Bigfoot, and Team Fame. At least Nintendo realized this flaw and updated it so that you can get some points, may not be a lot, but it's better than nothing.

I like the improvement that you get conch shells for multiplier battles, and how those same multiplier battle rates still count for mirror matches. It makes it not as disappointing to get mirror matches because you can at least get something akin to a 10x.

YES. Everything in this video I agree with. Your diagram, toggle switch idea, and your opinion on it overall. Nice video! Also since they’re adding “Conch Clash” in this next Splatfest it will make mirror matches slightly better too. Mirror matches are not great, yeah, but we need them for the sake of matchmaking!

Fighting your own team was especially important in Splatoon 1, NOBODY owned a wii U. You can bet yourself waiting 5-10 minutes between each match.

I feel like removing mirror matches from Splatoon would be like removing autobalance from TF2. It'd be nice to not get autobalanced until suddenly, you're playing a 12v4. Likewise, it'd be nice to play matches that matter until you wait 10 fucking minutes to play a game.

Honestly, all the points in the video can’t really be argued lmao. While I was absolutely livid at mirrors being in Tricolor when it first happened, I realized how much they actually helped a couple splatfests after the first one they appeared in. Back in the Gear vs Grub vs Fun Splatfest, I only got to play in 2 or 3 matches, one of which ended early bc of a dc. I never liked being queued into a regular match since the premiere, I wanted to play the mode I queued up to play. I was glad when anyone could be on either team since at that time, I was only on attacking teams (Rock, Gear, and Fire) and really wanted to try defending. While it initially didn’t make sense since tricolor is meant to be a comeback mechanic, it definitely made the mode a lot better since you can actually play what you queue up for. I have a love hate relationship with mirrors. I hate playing them, but I understand they’re there for a reason. And without them, the game would be in a terrible place during Splatfests. (Splatfests in Splatoon 1 originally didn’t have mirror matches, so the wait times were abysmal)

During Splatfest World Premiere my friend Vivienne and I were matchmaking for 967 seconds (16 minutes 7 seconds) so I LOVE mirrors. They at least let you play! And it can still increase your fest rank. It’s better than waiting over 15 minutes y’all.

While mirror matches are annoying, I would rather play and get a mirror match than wait who knows how long and end up not getting a match. Like you said, they are a necessary evil.

Yeah that’s another thing: everyone says how much they hate the squid parties during the mirror matches… me, I really enjoy them cuz they don’t happen very often at all these days. In 2 I could find a squid party once every couple months or so easy. Nowadays… I’ve only been in one (not during splatfests) in the entirety of splatoon 3. Sad.

@@MKJBlewis I just used the situation to get a free victory, I just make a little squid dance before start inking. Just an unfriendly in the other team I had to punish, but no match because I used the advantage of the range (He had an octobrush, and I used a writer 5-B)

Yeah I play the splatfests, but no one cares who wins after it’s over, so I’d rather just actually get to play instead of waiting for mirrors lol. And yes anarchy being gone for the whole weekend is dumb lol.

Y'know, Team Theme Park helped me realize something: I PREFER getting mirror matches to getting robbed from a match that actually counts thanks to my enemies thinking spawncamping is an actual strategy WHEN IT ISN'T! TLDR, Team Theme Park BETTER not become the sequel to Team Bucket List.
