Just wanted to clear up some things I've been seeing in the comments. First of all I wanted to discuss some of the issues we had with the car, as I feel they aren't accurately covered in the video. Regarding the ECU - We mentioned that we couldn't access the ECU. This is down to us not having the software/expertise to sort this for ourselves at the circuit. After the event, some small tweaks to the car and it runs perfectly again. Regarding the design of the exhaust. We knew that this might have some risks (this was advised by mtech) but we wanted to try it anyway. We've already made changes that should help us sort that for future rounds. The car is a work in progress and we're still learning. Building a hair dresser car into a time attack weapon isn't easy but we're making awesome headway. Onwards to Oulton!

Exhaust definitely needs to be redesigned, heat is one thing, but imagine if you develop an exhaust leak in there, even a little one and the fumes start to get into cabin, you wont smell it, just gradually going to get dizzy until you pass out. Can't stress enough how dangerous it could be, especially on the track doing high speeds. Long story short, no exhaust in the cabin is a must next step for Minty. Be safe out there Jimmy!

@@anonimas123456789 The plan was to relocate the exhuast system under the car, though a previous engineer Jimmy apointed insisted on the exhausts exit there so packaging was a real pain. The panel is actually screwed closed and sealed as a firewall component by design, but we see in the video this has been changed to some quick release clamps (not by us!). We plan,m due to time constraints, to place the silencers externally for now and seal the firewall perminantly.

To have it get hot enough to cause thermal shielding to spontaneously combust is really saying something. Edit: I didn't realize there were so many expert car builders on KZread. There's seems to be a good bit of dog piling in the comments and I wanted to make it clear that was not my intention. A couple things... - I was mistaken. That is not thermal wrap just the charred remains of the rubber sheath that comes on all O2 sensor wiring. Thermal wrap is resistant to 2000F radiant heat. Everything else in that area would be burning long before that if that's what it was. - To those questioning the build quality, you need to understand that there is no formula when it comes to building Unlimited TT cars. EVERYTHING is uncharted territory and without a bottomless R&D budget the only way to dial the car in is through trial and error. If you read Matt from M Tuned's reply to my comment you'll see the excessive heat in the cabin was not an issue until the heat wrap was added to the side pipe. (perfect example of trial and error) - Being that it was this cars first real shakedown things could've definitely gone way worse. I have all the faith in Jimmy and the guys to get this car dialed in.

First thing I said when I saw it was “That’ll be too hot”… Also to go out and have this issue in the first race means the engine hasn’t been run properly as the exhaust has to get very very hot to do that
@hazzabojangs
Жыл бұрын
It was intended to have aero ducting for cooling of this chamber but time didn't allow it to happen unfortunately. As Jimmy said, it was never "meant" to race like this (we advised against this exhaust design and instead considered aero fixes for cold air flow) but time pressures made that not happen. During testing we also didn't wrap the external exhaust, so that acted as a heat sink keeping the box temps lower - something the guys (not us at M-Tech) decided to do after the car left us to stop legs getting schorchio. Melting rubber and fire are two very different things :) If the aero as planned was in place, this would never have happened :)
@drunk3n_m0nk12
Жыл бұрын
@@hazzabojangs That makes sense. I partially said that in jest and don't agree with the replies questioning the quality of the build. I looked at it again and what I thought was wire heat shielding is just the really charred rubber sheath that gets put on the O2 sensor wiring. Thermal wrap is good for like what... 2000F radiant heat? If it was getting that hot Jimmy would have much bigger issues. I had a similar situation the first time my car saw a track. I had wrapped my exhaust all the way back to just past the downpipe. While it was great for reducing engine bay temps it wasn't until I really pushed the car that the section just past the wrap got so hot that it started to melt the rubber soundproofing on the floor pans. It didn't help that I stopped the wrap right at a gap in the factory aluminum heat shielding. Once I wrapped it past that point the issue went away. Overall I'd say it wasn't too bad for his first real shakedown and you guys have some solid feedback going forward. It definitely could have gone way worse. Their uniqueness is what makes time attack cars so cool but that also makes them pretty much uncharted territory as far as building them goes.
Fire, epic laps, "bum" written in camera sensor spots...this one had everything!
Minty looking fantastic. Small ergonamic issue noted on pedal cam, every now and again, the inside of your foot catches the edge of the brake pedal as you depress the throttle, you may have enoough deadzone for it not to be an issue, but even so trimming that bottom right hand corner of the brake pedal pad may prevent accidental brake activation in the future. Stay positive things are supposed to fall apart on a shakedown :)
@Jimmy_Broadbent
Жыл бұрын
Yeah I noticed that too. We'll get it sorted :)
Fair play to you and Mtech in getting the car to Brands, although it's evident that with more time available a proper trackday shakedown would've highlighted the issues you encountered, but "it is what it is". 😉 Constructive feedback: No PAS on a car intending to run wide slicks and aero was never going to be an easy drive, particularily if the original steering geometry was engineered with PAS in mind. Hopefully a simple retrofit for the guys, or conversion to an electric column (although more involved?). With the exhaust running along the sill, I'd consider moving the silencers out of the car and down there instead, like the Nismo GTR GT3's did. Most of the heat will be from the gasses being restricted through the boxes, so having just the downpipe in the car should reduce it, plus it'll give more room and be easier to insulate with multiple layers of wrap and proper shielding rather than reflective tape. Fuel debris is a concern on something with only 1-2hrs of running. Either a contamination in the fuel drums/cans, the mechanical pump in the supply drums (have seen these not be compatible with race fuels and literally dissolve), fuel tank foam incompatible with race fuel, or an oversight during the build where braided lines weren't thoroughly cleaned before final assembly. Worth getting the injectors flow-tested just in case any fine debris made it past and may have partially blocked them (fuel pressure will read correct, but the injectors simply won't be delivering the fuel). A bit surprised the mapper wasn't at this first event- even with days on the dyno, an engine at this level will always need tweaks to ensure it's 100%, and access to the datalogging should be a given for Gav and the team for diagnosis purposes. No reason why a tuner can't remotely log-in in this day and age with ease of internet access. Hope you guys can get on top of things for Oulton, will be watching the live timing with interest!

In UK motorsport hood and fender exits are only allowed in drag racing (unless the car has an FIA homologation). All exhausts have to exit behind the mid point of the wheelbase. Also post 1999 cars have to run catalytic converters (drag racing also exempt)

Don't get too bummed Jimmy ! Fuckin' A Jimmer, I've been with your channel for some time now and I'm happy as hell to see you RACING IRL IN PRO!!!! I only ever got to the middle of the pack on intermediate track days on a Literbike, and I LOVE seeing your come-up across the whole time since I watched you in the shed in the early tractor days. Keep it up, keep humble, and keep pushing forwards. ❤❤❤
There are much fewer testpilots than regular pilots. This is pretty unique and interesting content. The car looks very fast and I am sure it will be eventually. You are getting to experience something many of your viewers would like to, and let's be honest - having a car that is that track focused is not cheap but then having to pay the techs you need as a support makes this a very exclusive sport. I for one am very interested in what it takes to get this mazda up to speed and then maintaining it throughout a weekend. Godspeed!
Thanks for sharing!

The editing is really cool, great job !
Glad you made it out safe, Jimmer. NGL, the exhaust piping through the firewall into the cabin seems super sketchy to me. I don't know what packaging issues you're dealing with, but it's probably not worth bringing that type of fire risk into your cockpit. You may want to inspect any wiring routed near your hot-box too. I wouldn't be shocked if stuff outside that box is getting cooked as well. Best of luck w/ developing Minty. I'm sure you all will get her sorted!

There's something the sims will never touch. I know it was a frustrating putting but it was cool to see a car being ran through its paces. And that it's always a learning experience when trying out new cars. I still think the outing was a decent shake down, alot of other things could of gone wrong and your weekend could have been a lot worse. But regardless, I have faith you guys will get there, everyone's experienced things going wrong in shake down, that's what its for.

troubles aside...... wow! what a car dude!!!!
Well...I was surprised by the exhaust design, seemed a bit dodgy, and it looks like I was right. I'm actually surprised that Tech Inspection/Scrutineering signed off on you having a firewall with an unsealed hole into the cabin in it, that plate is clearly not sufficient to protect you from smoke and fire in the event something in the engine bay goes "fwoosh". I'm not sure it would have passed in many racing bodies in the US. As for the personal overheating issue, it's quite serious. Being that hot can dull your reactions and thought process, making you unable to drive quickly or safely. I'd recommend looking into a personal cooling system, like something from Coolshirt or Chillout Systems. I have used a Chillout shirt myself in Charlotte at CMS when the asphalt was over 130 degrees and it made all the difference.
