A man started using minoxidil foam (Rogaine) 20 days prior to help treat his hair thinning at the hairline and crown. However, the side effect of hair shedding was worse than he expected, as well as other unspecified side effects from the treatment. He doesn’t want this to be a long-term problem, so he asks if he can discontinue minoxidil use safely. He also says that he a dependency on minoxidil can develop, so he wants to discontinue using it before he hits that point.
New York hair restoration specialist Amiya Prasad, MD reviews his concerns in this video, where he suggests discontinuing Rogaine due to its side effects on him, and suggests an alternative treatment that does not use drugs, but has better long-term effectiveness:
1:19 - Dr. Prasad’s background training, and experience with surgical and non-surgical hair loss treatment, including his founding of TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers that offers a non-surgical hair loss treatment that requires no medications
1:52 - How the hair loss oral drug finasteride works by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which blocks the conversion of the hormone testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that causes male pattern hair loss
2:19 - How finasteride is taken daily, and can help about 60% of men suffering from pattern hair loss, but does some men don’t respond, and may others refuse to take it due links to long-term sexual side effects
2:43 - How Rogaine (minoxidil) has been around since the 80s, and was developed first as a hypertension drug, with side effects that could help people with hair loss
2:57 - How the symptoms of shedding and irritation from minoxidil use are documented side effects of minoxidil, so use should be discontinued if these occur
3:16 - How Dr. Prasad suggests his Hair Regeneration treatment as an alternative drug therapy, which involves a single treatment where the scalp is injected with a formulation of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Acellular matrix
3:42 - How PRP is a concentration of wound healing and growth factors found in your own blood, and Acellular matrix is a wound healing material first developed for surgical wound healing
3:58 - How Dr. Prasad first used Acellular matrix to improve hair graft survival and heal the hair donor area at the back of the head, but the fortunate side effect was thinning hair becoming thicker
4:18 - How Dr. Prasad took time to develop the Hair Regeneration process so it can be applied consistently to men and women of all ages suffering from hair loss, and with different variations of hair loss patterns
4:34 - How TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers started to bring this treatment closer to people who need it
4:47 - How Dr. Prasad has patients coming in from all over the world for the Hair Regeneration treatment to be done in New York City
4:56 - How Dr. Prasad thinks that this person has limited options to treat hair loss, with hair transplant being an option, but it is limited with the amount of hair that can be transplanted, and he may be losing hair faster than it can be transplanted
5:24 - How Hair Regeneration can stop hair loss by stopping hair thinning, reactivates hair that hasn’t been growing, and makes thinning hair grow back thicker,
5:46 - How Hair Regeneration is a single treatment session, and occasionally a second treatment 12 to 18 months after the first to build on results of the first treatment for people with advanced hair loss
5:52 - How Hair Regeneration is an unparalleled treatment, and is part of new kind of medical care that uses the body’s own adult stem cells to help correct a genetic hair loss pattern, which has been proven with over 5 years of patients and their data
6:28 - How Dr. Prasad recommends learning more about Hair Regeneration, seeing doctors about his options, and he should discontinue minoxidil treatment as it may not be good for his scalp

Hi karan bundhela, It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day, but the hair will grow back. Hair loss happens when those hairs grow back thinner after every shed, then regrowth cycle. As the treatment you describe is unlike our DHT-blocking combined with regenerative medicine approach, you can refer to these more videos on how we treat male pattern hair loss: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mICHpI-tdZPNk9I.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zo2j2bKHgtbcZqw.html

I've been using mine minoxidil 5 percent for about 7 months and my hair looks worse and noticeably thinner! I can see my scalp more on my crown, but now I'm scared to stop because it will get even worse from diss use shedding! What do I do?

Hi terror324, Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. I do think finasteride is more beneficial than minoxidil as it can slow down and stabilize hair thinning, and it can be used long-term more predictably. If you want to stimulate hair growth and thicken thinning hair, look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video. All Hair Regeneration patients can stop minoxidil, or be weaned from it to prevent a sudden hair shed, but young males with high DHT-sensitivity would still need finasteride as the Hair Regeneration treatment is not a DHT-blocker. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Vinay Rockz, Taking a DHT-blocker like finasteride is permanent as your genetics make you highly DHT-sensitive. DHT-sensitivity cannot be reversed. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi fernan jurraddo, As explained in the video, minoxidil appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed, and lose your gains. Our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil after our injection treatment. You can refer to his video about it - kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmmdssZ8lr2Yfso.html

Hi Vinay Rockz, Not all PRP and ACell treatments are the same, even if they sound like they used the same ingredients. Extracellular matrix by ACell is a difficult material to work with, especially for hair loss treatment. You have to look at how many treatments are needed, if boosters or additional treatments are needed, how long the treatment is effective for, and most importantly, you need to see pictures from doctor showing the actual results of their treatment. Extracellular matrix is a very difficult material to work with and master, even among experienced doctors. I pioneered this treatment in 2011 with patients, after years of developing it clinically. It took a lot of trial and error to set an algorithm that is scalable for different patients, age, gender, rate of hair loss, etc. How long the treatment lasts depends on your age and degree of hair loss. An older man with less aggressive hair loss can get 5 years or more of benefit without additional treatment, but a younger man with more aggressive hair loss and higher DHT-sensitivity will need to take finasteride along with the treatment to get 3-5 years of benefit. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Zahid Mushtaq, Sorry to hear that, but finasteride needs to be taken continually over a lifetime to keep blocking DHT-formation to slow progressive hair thinning. Our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil entirely after our injection treatment which only requires 1-2 treatment sessions with benefits lasting 3-5 years, but male patients with high DHT-sensitivity will still need to continue taking finasteride to block DHT. Hi indu ja, It is possible that you have PCOS/PCOD as well as female pattern hair loss or a different hair loss issue at the same time. I can't tell for certain without a physical exam and work up. You seem to be doing the right things for PCOS/PCOD if the medication you refer to are hormone based. I suggest you consult a dermatologist or trichologist in your area. You can see us as well, if it's convenient. Temporary hair shedding due to stress does not require medical intervention, but female pattern hair loss does. Female pattern hair loss can be confirmed through scalp biopsies.I hope this helps you.

Hi ASIF NAWAZ, Are you referring to a topical solution? I don't recommend finasteride as a topical, but rather in pill form as it needs to enter your blood stream. Topical finasteride is not as predictable or effective. Oral finasteride has about a 2% risk of sexual side effects, and normal function can return if you stop taking it. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Siva Kumar, Since the "gains" of minoxidil is usually hair delayed from normal shedding, those hairs can shed if you stop using it. Our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil entirely after our injection treatment, but our treatment is not PRP alone, and only requires 1-2 treatment sessions for benefits lasting 3-5 years, not monthly sessions that go on indefinitely. Hi Ansari farheen naaz, Sorry to hear about your problem, but the cause of your hair loss isn't clear. A nutritional deficiency does not cause hair loss, but it can make hair brittle. Severe stress can cause hair shedding, which is temporary, but starting and stopping minoxidil can also cause hair shedding since it delays the normal hair shedding cycle. Shed hair does grow back, but an examination is needed by a more experienced doctor to determine if you have other causes of hair loss. A doctor who prescribed minoxidil for "hair loss due to a nutritional deficiency" is likely not very experienced with hair loss treatment. I hope this helps you.

  • @AmiyaPrasadMD

Hi Laxmikant Jaiswal, You need to be prepared for significant and sudden hair shedding if you stop minoxidil, as minoxidil delays the natural shedding cycle, and extends the growth cycle so you have more hair on your head. You will need other treatments for progressive hair loss, such as finasteride to slow hair thinning due to DHT-sensitivity, or a treatment like TrichoStem Hair Regeneration featured in the video to thicken thinning hair, and stimulate hair growth from dormant hair follicles. All TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil, but male patients with high DHT-sensitivity may need to continue with finasteride as the injection treatment is not a DHT-blocker. I hope this clariifes things for you.

  • @AmiyaPrasadMD

    @AmiyaPrasadMD

Hi@@catalinotolentino4177, I don't understand why you would be using minoxidil if you don't have androgenetic alopecia. Androngenetic alopecia is caused by genetics, so it can't be caused by external factors. Since using minoxidil delays natural hair shedding, stopping minoxidil usually causes a sudden hair shed. Minoxidil does not thicken thinning hair, and pattern hair loss is gradual hair thinning. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Vinay Rockz, I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Also, the number of sessions needed does vary, and the longevity of results is unpredictable. Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination treatment where PRP is the activator of the main ingredient extracellular matrix by ACell. Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment for most patients, and can last up to 5 years and beyond, depending on the aggressiveness of the hair loss pattern. You don't need repeat injections periodically, and many older Hair Regeneration patients don’t need maintenance drugs like finasteride, but finasteride can concurrently help younger male patients with very early and aggressive hair loss. I do think finasteride is more beneficial than minoxidil as it can slow down and stabilize hair thinning. PRP injections for hair loss are needed indefinitely.

Hi C Co, I recommend you stop using minoxidil for now, and have your scalp checked by a dermatologist to see if it's related to minoxidil use. I hope this helps you.

You're welcome, C Co. If it clears up, then it's definitely due to the minoxidil. Foam should be less irritating than the liquid. It's not clear if you are male or female, but if you are male, you should look into finasteride as it's more effective against pattern hair loss than minoxidil as it treats the root cause of hair loss, and can be used long-term, unlike minoxidil. If you want to thicken thinning hair and stimulate hair growth, you can look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video.

Hi C Co, Finasteride slows hair thinning, but it can't stop it completely. With your likely level of DHT-sensitivity, your thinning would have been worse if you were not taking finasteride. Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but delays the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily.

Hi Bubay Sardar, Some people experience an irritated, itchy, or flaky scalp due to minoxidil use. Stopping minoxidil abruptly can also cause sudden hair shedding as the drug works by delaying hair shedding. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Juhi Verma, You will need to use minoxidil longer than 10 days to see its effects. Our Hair Regeneration patients only need one treatment session to thicken thinning hair, and stimulate hair growth. Hair Regeneration patients can stop minoxidil altogether. You can see results of this treatment in the video. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Vishwanath M, It's difficult to stop using minoxidil without hair shedding since the drug delays the natural hair shedding cycle. All our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil completely after the injection treatment, but some are weaned to prevent a sudden hair shed. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi @@vishwanathm9566, I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Also, the number of sessions needed does vary, and the longevity of results is unpredictable. TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination treatment where PRP is the activator of the main ingredient extracellular matrix by ACell. TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment for most patients, and can last up to 5 years and beyond, depending on the aggressiveness of the hair loss pattern. You don't need repeat injections periodically, and many older TrichoStem™Hair Regeneration patients don’t use maintenance drugs like finasteride, but finasteride is a must for our younger male patients with very early and aggressive hair loss due to high DHT-sensitivity asTrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration is not a DHT-blocker. PRP injections for hair loss are needed indefinitely. Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil completely, or be weaned off it to prevent a sudden hair shed.

Hi Feroz Ahmed, You can possibly try minoxidil foam instead of liquid as it does have propylene glycol, the ingredient most associated with scalp irritation, as explained in the video. If you are male, you can also consider a prescription for finasteride as it is more effective in slowing hair thinning, and treating male pattern hair loss. You can also refer to these more recent videos about the differences foam and liquid minoxidil, the limits of minoxidil, and about how our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients don't need to use minoxidil after our injection treatment: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kZ2qw8WPqKm7fMY.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/papslLqMoLTMnqw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmmdssZ8lr2Yfso.html

Hi@@ferozahmed2017, The differences of foam and liquid minoxidil are clearly explained in the video, so you can just watch it. Also, if you are student, does that mean you are under 30 and had a hair transplant? I highly advise against that, and ethical transplant surgeons do not perform hair transplants in men under 30. You can refer to these videos about why hair transplants are not advised for men under 30, and why treatment is still needed after a transplant, but there are better treatments than minoxidil: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHufpdtmY5POdso.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/pH2gq5dudpedaNo.html

Hi mohammed alfayez, Minoxidil is not associated with erectile dysfunction or decrease of sperm count - there is a small risk of these side effects with finasteride. Minoxidil can cause scalp irritation, and is a blood thinner, so these are the potential side effects you should know about.

Hi Bubay Sardar, If the irritation is intolerable and really bothering you, I suggest you stop using minoxidil. In general, finasteride does work better at slowing hair thinning. Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but delays the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects. You can also consider the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video, which is only done once, so you can avoid minoxidil application, and finasteride altogether for the vast majority of patients.

Hi Bhavesh Munnu, Minoxidil delays normal hair shedding, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, so if you stop using it, hair can suddenly shed. However, shed hair does grow back. Pattern hair loss is hair growing back thinner after it sheds, until it stops growing. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, but it delays hair shedding so you have more hair on your head.
