The PAP government should abolish NS for old citizens and for new Singapore citizens.

I think the keyword is “some..” you forgot to say some. One who is raising the question just cannot get his sentence critically right, Two who is answering the question refuses to infer the meaning of the question and went on to beat around the bush. I think most sgp boys r positive about NS obligations, juz awesome! Problem arises when floodgates r open so that those boys r competing for U-placements or jobs with overseas boys who ALREADY had 2 more years of education or work experiences. That’s on top of local competition from the female population w the same advantage. One big step behind follow by an initial unfair start-up is a big deal in a compounding manner. Should sgp reserve more tangible social benefits to its deserving NS boys? Should female pay high taxes to fund NS?

@@vincecarlo Both of my sons were borned here cos I am a Singaporean but from day 1 they knew they have to serve NS and dual citizenship is not allowed, we have always discuss about the issue of citizenship and NS is something they knew it is a duty to have to fulfil. I ask my son why he never whine about haircut lah.. 2 years not in University.... he said : Mummy ! we already knew must do NS, just do and get it done. They both have left after NS and ICA informed us that we have a decision to make, choose SG or the other, both my sons chose the other cos of the things they want to do. I mean it their life, I need to respect their decision but Singapore will always have a special place in their hearts and NS is an extremely important period of their lives and my son was and still loved that he was posted to Artillary - THE HOME OF THE GUNNERS, he love all the good, bad, tough things thrown at their face and just internalise it. Whenever I saw NS boys, I will always remember my son who told me, mummy ! it a duty, just do it and move on. Had Singapore allow dual citizenship, he woud be very happy to go back to serve his unit. I knew 1 day if Singapore need more sons returning to defend Singapore, my children will come back even though they picked up citizen elsewhere. Through NS, my children knew peace and freedom do not come easy. Thank you to all NS boys and man and families supporting their children when they were serving NS. Thank you so much.

Defense Minister gave correct numbers. However may I know how true is it that first generation PR who comes alone to Singapore for study and later becomes PR/SC are not liable for NS? Only second generation PR/SC must serve NS. I have met such people during my younger days. Is it still being practiced?

These foreigners who come here to study are not PR yet and they do not enjoy subsidies and other benefits given to citizens or 2nd generation PRs. It is only when they proved themselves economically useful, then they can apply for PR and subsequently citizenship. Mature foreigners with PR status are exempt from NS because they did not enjoy the benefits of our country but their sons (2nd generation PR) are obliged to serve. Hope you understand the differences.

NS is nothing more than a means to entrap Singapore males to ensure there is a core, which is detrimental to their whole being and a human rights abuse that the other half of Singapore wholeheartedly supports. Young people all over the world get to expand their horizons, better themselves, and become someone better than their old selves with travel, but not your average Singaporean male, especially those who do not have the means to go overseas for their education and remain overseas to discover more of themselves. It is an insult.

They know this statistic as well hence they not hurting their voter base. 40% vote opposition comprises longer term Singaporeans. Because their policies hurt the longer term locals like serving NS compared to foreign talent age 20+ arriving in SG to take up PR not called up for NS.

1st generation new citizens should not be allowed to enjoy subsidies, benefits entitled to local Singaporeans since they had not contributed in the past . Sg should only start allowing their second generation (those borne in sg) to have the privileges when they can really contribute. This is also to ensure that they really have the intention to be here permanently.

So in all scenarios, by the time a couple get citizenship after many years of living in Singapore, they won't be eligible for grants, as they would have already bought a flat in Resale market as PR or in private housing market if they have enough cash. So the grants are not wasted and it's not enjoyed by foreigners or person becoming Singapore citizen. Could you tell the readers how much grants you got when u buy your first flat? I am very sure your housing grant is lesser than rental foreigners paid to live in Singapore by the time they get their citizenship! However, there is another group of people. if there is a local person and a foreign spouse like PR for example, that PR person indirectly enjoy the grant because of the local spouse. The other end of the stick - PRs who serve National Service and immigrated elsewhere??? There is 1 internet fellow from SAF and returned to US and served as a US Army officer. He benefited from Singapore training n excel as a US officer. This is a waste of National Resources to train our people for others’ people benefit. There NS must only be for Singaporeans and much much more preferential privileges must be given to Singaporeans who served NS above those that doesn’t.

Singaporeans, I have served and have MR. Let's explore these: 1) How many native Singaporeans complain and will rather *NOT* do NS despite being a native, and will go all out to avoid NS? 2) Since when is it the duty of someone else to protect *YOUR OWN HOME* ? 3) Make a guess how many 2nd gen PRs I have met until I completed all my cycles? 4) Are new citizens or PRs in other countries required to serve conscription, or is SG the exception rather than the norm?
