Thomas is my friend from a school called Tolsta Primary. Yep, we know each other

Watching this only confirms my view - that, if you need to breach a sandbar to drain a lagoon of deep water trapped behind it, you don't need a massive excavator to dig a trench 15 - 20 feet wide. A channel no wider than your hand will allow water to flow, and that initial tiny flow will soon scour it wide enough to let a river through - exactly as Thomas and Rebecca saw for themselves! Seriously; they might not have been at school that day, Gavin, but you still gave them a superb lesson in physics and hydrology - and one they'll never forget. Well done!

It also depends on how course and dense the sand is. If you have course sand that is very loose, the water will just sink into it when the channel is not able to keep up with water. Your flow needs to be bigger than the amount of water draining into the sand.

5tonedFlaming0 That is so true...its the little things like this that your kids will always remember. You are a great dad and your kids are very lucky to have you as their dad. I hope alot of dead beat dads watch this and hopefully it gets in their head that they should take part in their kids lives. Dont look at them as little annoying kids, look at them as tiny adults that will grow up to be whatever it is that you teach them and show them. It is a VERY rewarding experience and I wouldnt change it for the world... Great Video

Thanks, they are four years older now and we still wait for the chance to build another dam. The conditions were just right that day, plenty of water, steep banks and not too cold or rainy (They were only young then and didn't like to be out in the cold).

Love it!! When I lived in the UK I often took my kids up to Dartmoor (in Devon County) and we used to make dams in streams - and then enjoy the final dam collapse - oh those were the days.... long long ago. :)

I started doing this at Thomas' age. Never stopped really! I could never resist trying to stop the stream and then wait for it to fill before the best bit. Thanks for watching.
