    HEY! Before you comment "why don't you just play the two synths together without polychain" let me explain. I seem to have been unclear in the video. This is because I honestly thought this was a pretty simple, but niche, idea. Polychaining commonly refers to you connecting two or more synths together combining the polyphony and playing the same sound on each device. There are two things going on: sharing the polyphony and sharing the sound settings. Now in this video I describe an idea I have: what if you could have the polyphony sharing but not the shared sound setting. This would not be layering. This would not be split. This would be a hybrid form of polychaining. The main reason I use the word polychain is because of the context of this video. I think most get that I don't mean that this is 100% pure polychain, its just some weird version of it. Using parts of the polychain functionality for another purpose. Someone likely have a better name for it. Now what would this be useful for? Well it would give you access to 8 voices from one units keyboard, but with control of the sound being available on each synth. Practical example: imagine creating a square wave patch. You want to create a big soundscape. With polychain enabled you can do PWM for all 8 voices. The PWM will be identical for each of the 8 voices. Which is ofc what you'd expect with polychain. Imagine now that you remove the master control of the LFO. Suddenly you can have 4 voices with one PWM setting and 4 with another. Just as when you layer sounds this would be cool to create a more complex sound. But instead of layering it (having max 4 note polyphony) you could have 8 notes of polyphony. So you could play a big chord. Add to this say a slightly different filter sweep for each of the two synths. Niche. Probably. Cool? Yeah I think so. You don't have to agree. P.S if "polychaining" would be allowed for XD + original Minilogue it would be this very same hybrid form. If someone has a fun name for it let me know.

    Well wait a minute. What happens if you adjust the PWM setting on the slave after you've selected the patch on the master? Or if you change the slave's patch? I don't have a XD module yet so I can't test this. What happens? I don't think poly chaining would prevent you from doing this - the master has no way of knowing that something has changed on the slave. Then you'd have different PWM settings on the master and the slave. One additional caveat - to get the effect I think you're going for here, you'd need the master to alternate notes with the slave in polychain - that is, the master playing notes 1 - 3- 5 - 7 and the slave playing 2 - 4 - 6 - 8. I'm not sure if the minilogue does that, but I think the midipal does. Hope that helps!

  • @BoBeats

    @BoBeats

    5 жыл бұрын

    i talk about this in the video: the settings of the slave is locked to the master. You can't change anything on the slave basically.

  • @memereference2545

    @memereference2545

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@BoBeats You can't adjust the slave from its own controls when in slave mode? If so that's a bummer, and Korg could easily fix it. But, couldn't you set up patches with the same number on both synths, with slightly different settings? For that not to work, the master would have to be overwriting the slave's patch. I'm really curious now as to what's going on here.

  • @memereference2545

    @memereference2545

    5 жыл бұрын

    I just updated my own XD and connected it to a midi monitor to see what is happening in poly mode. Unless Korg is doing something that doesn't even show up as a midi message in Midi monitor, the master is just sending program and bank changes to the slave, and is not overwriting the slave's patch. So you should be able to save different versions of a patch to the same program number on each device, and get the effect you're looking for. Just take the slave out of polychain mode, alter the patch, save it, and re-enter slave mode. Worth a try.

    @Andrew Mwah Sounds like a good trade, if possible. You won't loose anything but the keys of the OG. The Module is also a standalone synth, so you would still have 2 Minilogue to play separately, just like now, only that you can Chain if you want. More choice. I would do the same. In fact, i am currently contemplating to swap the MicroFreak with the Module, but i am happy with just the solo-XD for now. I really wish they would enhance the synth in poly chain by giving us 2 LFO and 2 Filters and 2 Mod ENV .. (and not just lock down the entire unit when used as slave) That's a waste somehow. Imagine 8 voices with those modulation options on top. Would have increased the value. As it stands you only get 4 more voices and i am not so sure if would be satisfied with the limited programmability. It is still the "same synth" in the end - just phatter! Hmm..

    Hmm it actually sounds pretty good in this vid. Maybe I have to search KZread again in a moment. One thing I miss on the XD though is the noisy delay from the original Minilogue. I do like that this Module version is more compact and just use the sequencer as a keyboard (though not velocity sensitive I guess). Would fit better into my room. And I actually think that it looks better than the keys version as well. But that's a minor.

    I think they could probably add a software filter in the firmware to polychain the units as you describe. They would just need the software to filter out the CC and PC data, only sending every other note to the chained device. Now will they? Questionable.

    The 'get your hands dirty' method would be an Arduino MIDI splitter project, that takes IN from a keyboard and cycles the MIDI channel on the OUT round robin. Or some kind of firewall that you put in between. Reverse engineer which commands it sends for controlling the slaves timbre and then filter them out. Other than some unpredictable behavior I can't really see an use case for it, but hey, it would be fun to build such thing!

    Hello. I have a question about polychaining. Can you please check if the keyboard can be used simultaneously on two polychained units having different octave settings? I have seen a video where the octave is shifted on the master but the slave keeps the original led indicator setting. Maybe it is just a bug. I would be curious for two keyboard version polychained. Having one keyboard in the lowest octave and the other in the heighest for example and playing notes on both. Thanks.

    I got my XD keyboarded version about a week ago. I love it and it will make a great addition to my studio AND live rig. I am considering the XD Module as well so I can get 8-voice poly for the system. I love how it works and sounds. I wonder, though, if putting a MIDI Thru box between the Master and Slave unit(s) would open up the polyphony a bit further. Say you buy a MIDI Thru box that has 4 output ports on it (like the MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru) and then hook up potentially up to 4 Minilogue XD Modules in that fashion. Would that allow for up to 16-voice polyphony? It would be neat to see if it could work... I think that I will ping Korg and see if that is an option or not. Great videos, thank you, sir :)

  • @BottleMakesMusic

    @BottleMakesMusic

    2 жыл бұрын

    This was going to be my question too. I think because the Quandra Thru is just that; a thru / splitter box, each of the slave Minilogues would all just play the same notes. You would need an active splitter like the Event Processor or the Blokas MIDI Hub to perform some manipulation and routing of the MIDI messages to achieve the aim of a round-robin polychain of 16 notes. Or you could buy something like the Conductive Labs NDLR which supports polychaining of up to four devices and 22-note polyphony of the PAD part.

    It's a bit bizarre that the module and keyboard are both €659 at Thomann. I tend to prefer modules since they take up less space (if you already have a MIDI keyboard), and are usually a bit cheaper. In this case the keyboard version looks like a better option, and it should have a higher resale value too. I'm in the market for an analog poly, but I'm still leaning more towards the Deepmind 12D. The XD definitely has some advantages, but also more limitations - only 4 voices, no full ADSR for the filter, fewer modulation routings and effects.

    Hmmm it’s subjective of course but when I briefly had a Deepmind I found I was doubling the osc up as they were so thin sounding so it was more like a 6 note poly. I don’t think numbers are really the point though - it comes down to which sounds better to you and which user interface you gel with. For me again too much menu diving on the Deepmind. It also felt like it was made out of plastic intended more for food packaging. So thank you Korg for going for quality rather than headline figures. Horses for courses of course and some love their Deepminds. Just as long as other synth manufacturers don’t feel forced to compete that’s cool with me.

    Hi guys.....anyone got this module that could help me out? I seem to have a dead key when using the little keyboard. Its weird because it seems to be usable when selecting options from the menu....like global settings for example. But when it is in keyboard mode it doesn't trigger any sound. Thanks in advance....I'm assuming I've been ripped off slightly and its not just a strange feature

    I was wondering because I heard there were problems for the midi sync of minilogue through the usb instead of classic midi in and out. But anyway, the idea was to control the module trough a midi keyboard which is connected usb to the computer, so that I can control the midi channel linked to the module but also other midi channels of plugins. And switch the activated channels with an akai apc40. All this in order to limit the live set to an unique keyboard controlling virtual and hardware synths..

  • @rdean150

    You are correct. It is not rack mountable. I asked some Korg reps at a synth expo. I don't know why they gave it those overhanging "ears" if you can't mount it. When I asked why it wasn't rack mountable, they said that the engineers didn't want to have to change the layout - it's exactly the same face as the normal XD. Sounds like a, erm, less-than-perfectly-planned project that tacked on this feature/product variant late in the development cycle and probably too expensive to change. Still though, better to have the desktop version than not I guess.
