Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's master of modules, demonstrates the Korg Minilogue XD Module, a desktop module version of the company's acclaimed Minilogue XD keyboard synth. A four-voice synth with two analog VCOs plus a customizable digital Multi Engine and built-in stereo digital effects, the Minilogue XD module is equipped with the exact same control set as the keyboard-equipped version. The Minilogue XD module features a Poly Chain function that lets you connect it with another Minilogue XD keyboard or XD module so that the two units can operate as a polysynth with a total of up to eight voices.

    Yes, I miss the 19" rack mount modules of years ago, but you know, I remember how difficult it was to sit in front of a rack and program them. The little boutiques can be set up on a small table and programmed at desktop ergonomics. I have two Boutiques that fit nicely on a computer keyboard slide out table, it is a joy to hang over the little guys and sound design.

    Thanks for this Daniel; looks like such an intriguing addition to the Minilogue line-up. I've had the XD for about a month now, and it's phenomenal, but it's awesome to know you could add 4 more voices via poly-chaining--and that they did it so cleverly. Is it fair to ask if the master XD had additional Multi-Engine waveforms (e.g., beyond "Waves"), you (1) wouldn't necessarily need to add the same waveforms to the slaved XD module since the master controls, and (2) could you add distinct waveforms to the Multi Engine of the module to give you a grand total of up to 31 different multi-engine wave forms ("Waves" + 15 user slots per XD) to use?

  • @Jason75913

    @Jason75913

    It has a triangle, and you can use the filter with max resonance to self-oscillate the filter as a sine wave, and use keyboard tracking to have it be playable at different pitches across the keyboard. I know my OG Minilogue can do this, so I'd imagine the xd also supports it. So technically you can DIY a sine wave oscillator, but it'll completely drown out the other oscillators.

    Anyone know if you can do splits/layers with the polychaining or is it still mono-timbral?

  • @sweetwater

    @sweetwater

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Haut Strange. Two Minilogue XD Modules (like pretty much any two MIDI modules) are, by definition, bi-timbral in that they can do Splits/Layers simply by sending MIDI from any controller that can send two different MIDI Channels. If your MIDI controller can send two MIDI Channels on different sections of the keyboard, you'll get Splits. If your MIDI controller can send both MIDI Channels when you play anywhere on the keyboard, you'll have a Layer. (If it can't, you can simply set both XD Modules to the same MIDI Channel to create Layers.) But, to answer your original question, you can't do Splits/Layers until you turn off the poly chain feature. Here are examples of me doing each of these: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2mZmsGMqarTdso.html

    It kind of depends on the measurement of the PCBs and how much can be chopped off the side behind the front panel. The panel is also concave.. but if the measurements are accurate the front would fit in my racks at least with some holes drilled through it. You'd need to shave about 2.6cm off of each side behind the panel though. It's irritating frankly that Korg didn't imagine it might be useful for organisation to be able to rack these from the get go. Especially with polychain ability. Buying a new synth then drilling holes in it isn't my idea of fun. I might pickup one used some years down the line and try it

    Hi MinimalWave1982. It doesn't. You can use these links to see the current price of the keyboard and module version: www.sweetwater.com/store/search.php?s=minilogue+xd Thanks for watching!

    In Britain the module costs quite a bit more than the keyboard version, which is just bloody stupid.

    Hi MP MI. The Minilogue XD and XD Module are designed for one master and one slave unit. So, although you could add more XDs for layering, you can't polychain more than the two units. Thanks for watching!
