Mini Spray Guns for Scale Modeling

This video presents three different types of miniature spray guns that are useful in painting scale models. Mini spray guns can be an airbrush, conventional spray gun, or HVLP type. This video explains the differences and uses of each. A description and video of each Iwata mini spray gun that would be useful for scale models can be found here ... scale-model-wo...

I'm so glad I found your videos. I am not new to spraying paint. Back in the late 70's I took a course an auto-body repair, and worked as a painter at a golf course. While working there I got a lot of experience painting small things like T-markers and flag poles, with a automotive spray gun. I'm in my 60's now and am getting back into scale modeling, and your videos are proving to be very helpful. Thank you!

Your channel is such a wonderful resource. There is so much in every video that I didn't know or never heard explained properly. This gives me a lot of confidence that I can now achieve much higher quality finishes, as I apparently have been doing just about everything wrong. You make a great teacher, thanks!

Mr. Budzik, you are a Master sir. Thank you so much for sharing this very valued video. Scale modeling it is not a hobby but rather is a science and an art.

Paul: It's great to see you are making more videos and have a new channel. I model in 1/32 scale model trains especially. locomotives. Locos have many details that are hard to access without an airbrush so painting them can be difficult to do without getting the airbrush "dried paint" over-spray around the details you show so well. I would like to use an HVLP gun to paint the large surfaces, but will the gun make the airbrush "dried paint" over-spray areas smooth out from the first coat painting of the details? I really like the surface finish you are getting with your guns. Please keep the videos coming. Bill Box

Hello, I am just getting into model making and wanting to learn with the best possible, or most suitable tools hence why I am looking at the above video, the main interest in using the mini spray gun is for my 1:24 scale cars, 1:32 scale Military vehicles, architectural buildings and also many wargame type tiny figures and machines, I have a wide field of interest :) Did you work out which mini spray gun was most suitable and have you enjoyed the experience since using it compared to a normal airbrush? Your opinion and possible recommendations would be very much appreciated :) Also, I bought the standard mid tier airbrush compressor, would this still be suitable for using with the mini spraygun?

Hi squuz, 5 years on what spray gun have you ended up with? I’m in the same position you are with regards to models etc. I’m using an iwata revolution with a 0.5mm needle and having all kinds of orange peel and finish problems. It just feels like I can’t get enough wet paint on the surface to pull out nicely. I feel like a spray can would do a better job. So I’m wondering if a mini spray gun might be the answer to get more paint on. Interested where you ended up with your problem.

Can the RG3 (.6mm) be used with Iwata Smartjet pro? (It doesn’t have a tank.) Want to get good smooth primer and clear/overcoat coverage for 1/60 gunpla and similar sized models. Upate: Based on spec, it looks like the Smart Jet Pro will not be able to work with RG3. Any recommendation on compressors?

Hi Paul - I’m using my Iwata LPH-50 (0.6mm needle) for the first time and am getting orange peel on my finish. I’m spraying Tamiya acrylics (thinned with their acrylic thinner) with a 1/2” air hose connected to my portable Dewalt compressor. I have the Iwata gun gauge set to 0.9 bar (approx. 13psi - why couldn’t they have used psi instead of bar?) following your instructions. I’d really appreciate some guidance as I plan on using this gun on many more projects if I can get the hang of it.

I am finding it difficult to find the G6 in Australia, would the LPH50 Compact HVLP Spray Gun be suitable for my @ scale cars, @ scale Military vehicles, architectural buildings and also many wargame type tiny figures and machines?

Hello Laly, With any of the LPH Guns you really should have a tank. You would probably be OK with your normal hose. Is the G6 too small?

Hello! I had to watch this video several times and then read some more in order to get to these questions... I have a compressor capable of 1.1CFM. I wonder what would be the downside of using an LPH80 with it? Would I be better off with a G5? The LPH80, G5, and HP TH are the only ones that I can get easily. I would be grateful if you could find the time to help me with an answer...

What are you using it for? How large are the models? I doubt you could even get the LPH80 to work. If you want a fan pattern, I think your best choice would be the G5. The TH fan pattern is not very functional.

Scale Model Workshop Thanks for the quick reply! I plan to use it on my 1:350th scale battleships (eg. Bismarck). I think that my Eclipse HP BS, that I use on my 1:48th airplanes, won't do a very good job. I was considering a Revolution with a bigger nozzle (0.5) before seeing your video... Which apparently wouldn't have helped much.

Scale Model Workshop Hello! I received my G5 the other day. For the moment I have only tested it with water. Just to get the feel of it. I think it will do a good job with base coats. I wonder how much over spray it will generate with paint... The fan pattern is not as flat as I expected but it can be easily adjusted. Now I see why my compressor couldn't have coped whith an LPH-80. Thank you for helping me choosing the right thing!

Radu ... Don't get crazy with the air pressure and you should have no problem with overspray. You only have a .5mm nozzle so that's no more material than a typical airbrush wide open... add a little bit for the fan and you are good. The fan doesn't eliminate overspray ...it just gives you a bigger sweet spot so you make less passes with a better overlap. It takes practice, just like airbrushing.
