Mini Lathe - drilling without drill
A few weeks ago I got some used micro boring bars. With them it's possible to make holes without drilling before. In this video I make a mount for the micro boring bars and test it.

Love the video--no music or hoopla--very relaxing.
I've used mini bars like these for years at my work, but never thought to try one without drilling a hole first. Well done, Sir!

The tool looks like a typical mini boring bar from ph HORN. I admire the willingness to make your own frames, although they are available in several sizes. From an economic point of view, making a hole in this way is a big waste of time, especially when you need to make a deeper hole, in a harder material and in addition in a series of, for example, 1000 parts, but the idea itself is very positive in terms of a DIY enthusiast.

I bought a similar second hand set from Bengs. I think the brand is Paul Horn. A new set is very expensive! They work wonderfully, but I got serious chatter on tin bronze which is rather hard and brittle. These tools are normally used with internal cooling in CNC machines, behind a screen. Be careful not to crash them. Flying carbide fragments can penetrate the body. They need some sharpening on a diamond wheel after a while. Maybe I will build a simple tool grinder.

Thank you very much for the good tips! I have a Diamond wheel for a dremel engraver which i use for the sharpening of tungsten electrodes. I will try this if it becomes necessary.

I use these tiny boring tools on my micro lathes, they're excellent! I prefer the Sandvik and Iscar branded ones because they have an ordinary round shank which makes things much easier. 👍

I'm not sure if it's a problem or advantage to have round shank boring bars? Sometimes you want to change top angle so you can rotate them in holder but other times they can be a pain to get 'dead level'

I did this on accident a couple of years ago on a citizen swiss lathe. The drill broke on a copper job and the ph horn boring bar kept making holes. I couldnt believe it.

I can't help it but wounder if boring via the tailstock gives better precision. At least on a mini-lathe where cross-slide is so unstable, or........
Neat tool holder but are the mini indexed boring bars cheaper than a drill of same size? I like what you made and could possibly have a use for it but I think I'll stick with conventional drill bits and boring bars
@randomtechnician
No, the advantage is that you can make very precise holes with any (small) diameter, but i also would suggest to drill before, so the boring bar works much smoother

@@randomtechnician I use these type of carbide bars when making bush bearings for model engines. You can get them right down to 3mm diameter which makes it easy to bore precise bronze main bush bearings dead on size.

Why the 2nd angle at 9:20 is 30 degree? The mini bar angle is 40 degree (at 7:52) , and you set the 1st angle is 20 degree (at 8:44), then the 2nd should be 20 degree. What am I missing?
@randomtechnician
It's the other side of the vise-scale, 50 degree is zero here, so 30 is -20 degree.

Do you have a timestamp for me?
