So we decided to do our annual road trip to Cornwall in the Mini Electric rather than the Tesla Model 3. This was our first road trip in this car. How would we get on not being able to rely on the Tesla Supercharger Network? Would we face any problems? Would we run out of charge?
This was a test of the UK's charging network

I love mine. People freak out it’s such a minimalistic charge but I never seem to have issues. Great vid

if public charging is talked about it is an issue...
I'm 6.1ft so not left with much headroom but still love my Mini EV in every respect. Drive is great. No it's not a 3.4 secs 0-60 beast but plenty pokey enough to make it fun. Fast charging takes 20-30 minutes to 80% when needed but TBH we rarely do trips long enough to have to recharge. This Cooper S is everything a Mini should be & IMHO is more planted than the petrol version.
Great vid
After trading in my 2018 Tesla Model S, I do not regret getting the Mini SE at all. This car is so much fun, especially in a city like London. With the Model S the drive was just so boring to be honest, yes it was very comfy with air suspension but boring nonetheless!

Cheers Chris. In a few respects, I think the mini is a better drive than the Tesla even though my Tesla is considerably more powerful. Thanks for stopping by, please consider a sub. J
Hey mate. Just got a Mini Cooper SE and go to Cornwall a lot and was intrigued by your video. Good to know that it was relatively simple. Are you planning on doing more videos with the Mini. Subscribed! :)

I have a bmw i3 rex great car a proper ev with no downside , i will never public charge , i go where i want to go not where the car tells me then wait to charge if the the charger works, i love evs but i am to old to play hunt the charger , as soon as anyone talks about public charging it makes it a negative, i used to drive petrol and diesel cars for a living no other option, i never thought about fuel stops, How many ice drivers plan refueling....

Valid points. I too drove diesels. I guess it’s case by case scenarios. There isn’t a one size fits all, at least that’s what I believe. What fits me, may not fit you. I accept and fully agree that full EVs are not for everybody. I don’t agree with the 2030 fuel ban. I think they should all coexist at least for now. Thanks for stopping by.
Having failed miserably with Tesla ownership we have ended up with a cooper S mini. We love it, now researching the electric version. Let’s hope the paint stays on the Mini!

Really excellent Video, can't believe there isn't more on the subject of using the mini for long journeys. Do you mind me asking, what is the maximum mileage you've got out of the Mini, when you're driving it like a saint!?

Hi, Christopher. I don’t mind at all, thanks for watching. So the car is my partners and being her first, she has that range anxiety. I don’t care about that and pushed the battery. I got 143 miles out of it but I only turned back home because I knew I wasn’t near a charger. It would’ve done more. This was recently. Warm weather, driver window open for cooling and driving normally rather than being super careful. Hope that helps. Please consider a sub. J

I can get a 160 miles from my Mini Cooper EV, and I'm an ex international 40 ton HGV1driver, so to most people on the road, I'm more of a sinner than a saint.
@Christopher-sj2sc

I bought one, kept it for 8 months and sold it for a great loss. I found unless I was prepared to drive no faster than 40mph I got nowhere near to the 160 miles. In winter you’re looking at closer to 100 miles. I loved the look and feel of the EV mini, but unless it’s your second car and you live in a city it’s far to compromised. Also the fact that these are now selling at 50% of list price after 2 years shows that many people come to the same conclusions as me

@@Christopher-sj2sc this 160 mile range, was achieved on a mix of roads, with varying speed limits, of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph, most of them being 40 , 50 and 60 mph, and this Mini EV, was driven at the maximum speeds on these roads too.

How much does it cost for each charge?
@Johnhere

Varies considerably that based on where you charge it. Anything from £2.50 (at home) up to £20 on the most expensive rapids but there is a lot in between.
My electric mini, 2023 just stop working and the dealership doesn’t know what wrong! Dealership not sure in the warranty will fix the car. I will never buy another mini cooper

@@bigmacdaddy1234 Exactly!! unless the owner broke the car I know for an absolute fact Mini would fix or replace especially when you never own the batteries in an ev they're rented.
I can't get a EV because I would gain too much weight. Stopping every 2 hours and eating to pass charging time would kill my waistline!

I know that the title is click bait but words like ‘Disaster’ even as a question just leads to more FUD. People see the word, don’t watch the video and ‘disaster’ is the one word they remember for EVs. It’s not helping change peoples views of EVs in a positive way.
@Johnhere
Жыл бұрын
Hopefully the caption works, Clive and the video is watched as it is hugely positive. There was a disaster albeit not related to charging.

Might have been better if you could have put your car on a Motorail train wagon that there used to be but modernised so that it could charge EVs

Not fair to the car, not made for that, live clearing the driveway of snow with a lawnmower! Can be done, not easily, not efficiently. Not fair to the car. Lack of infrastructure is also not the car’s fault.

Not made for long distance cruising, Carl you’re right but it is a car and it must be able to do what I want it to do. It did it very very well, we were very happy with it.
At the end of the day, it's got totally capp range , just nothing but a totally badly engineered EV....

Actually, it’s very well engineered. It’s quick, goes round corners like a UFO and for what we need it for, the range is plenty.

@Johnhere

@@whocares264 I’m not sure about it being more expensive to run. It’s doing 4miles p/kwh so pretty efficient. My ipace does 2.5 and has a massive battery, that is therefore more expensive to run.
@whocares264
21 күн бұрын
@@Johnhere Yes bigger batteries are cheaper to run because you will be able to do more cheap home charging (7.5p per kwh off peak)less public charging..

@whocares264 I guess if you public charge a lot then I suppose you’re right. It does go back to use cases though and my first point. I.e, for me, I hardly ever public charge due to my mileage so it’s neither here nor there really. As an example, I think the mini has been public charged twice since I made this video.
