Mines & Mountains! | Lead, South Dakota EP. 3

In this episode of our 2023 South Dakota trip to the Black Hills National Forest, we took a easy ride through the mountains just south of the town of Spearfish, SD. While one our way there, we took a route through an active mine, which was definitely not something we were expecting to get to do. Overall it was a very basic day of riding and we hope you enjoy this video.

We were just out there. Yall need to ride Camp 5. If we come across 62" trails we just rode them anyway. Always have. We've never seen anyone patrolling out there. It is ridiculous! We came across a full sized jeep on 40's on a 62" trail @ Ditch creek! 😂😂😂

Oh we definitely though about saying “screw it” and going on them, but we really do try to acknowledge and respect the rules as best we can. Plus, with our luck we would be the ones who get caught LOL! Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed it!

Of the 3,500 or so miles of roads and trail available to ride in the Black Hills, less than 300 miles are 62" restricted trails. A little planning with the MVUMs goes a long way, since they are marked. The Avenza map app is what most use since the official maps can be downloaded into it. OnX is getting better, but it's still a long way from the best option in the hills. On one hand, I totally see where you are coming from, on the other government. Love 'em or hate 'em they administer the trails, so we need to follow their rules. The locals don't want the forest service closing more trails because visitors selfishly break the rules and go home. Thanks for respecting them. The 62" trail system was developed back when machines of the day were no more than 60" The soil and environmental studies were for that width. We're hoping to get them pushed to 65" one day without all of the red tape and more studies. For now though, there's more than enough miles for bigger machines, and honestly the 62" aren't even the best ones. They are more like additional miles of trails for riding sake. The Forest Service isn't happy with the rules being broken. More restricted gates are going in and enforcement is on the rise. Otherwise, I hope you enjoyed South Dakota. I'm loving the vids!

Awesome video, what trail # was this? I love South Dakota but I find there trails hard to follow/find. Yes the width restriction sucks. I talked to a local the 62” restriction is so the people riding atvs have trails that are not destroyed by utv’s. I said who rides atvs anymore?

Not sure which ones these were, been a couple of months. We found that using online maps like On-X Off-road as incredibly helpful for finding trails. We learned later that week from some locals as well that the restrictions were for ATV riders. They did tel us that those restrictions will expire in a year or two and after that all trails should be open to everyone. Thanks for watching, we appreciate it!

South Dakota doesn't really enforce the 62" trails.

Love South Dakota! We rode there back in June. The riding is amazing! We rented a General while we were out there, and it fit everywhere, but I saw a lot of people were making trails around the width restrictions posts.

We loved it as well. Defiantly surpassed our expectations! We thought about saying “screw it” to the restrictions, but we really try to respect the rules wherever we go. Thanks for watching!
