My biggest issue with Bedrock Edition is how it plays. I've tried it and I hate it. It always feel clunky in movement compared to Java. The creative menu navigation is slower, Java is quicker and a lot smoother in most aspects. Granted Bedrock has better performance, I will give Bedrock that one. There's honestly a lot about Bedrock that will never make me want to play it, Java has a much bigger community than Bedrock, especially when it comes to KZread, I personally don't see Java being weeded out like that. You say Bedrock has been getting major changes to have more parity to Java, maybe it's to merge Bedrock into Java? Not the other way around.

I think, as a bedrock player, that if mojang decides to shut down Java edition. No matter when they do that. That there will be a major backlash from the community. I personally think that they will try to merge Java and bedrock into 1 single edition with the best features from both sides. Avoiding backlash in the process.

sad thing is they did NOT even need to make multiple versions of the game, because ALL the problems of having EVERYONE play together started when they made Bedrock and Pocket editions in the first place... and the problem is not so much the multiple versions as the laziness of NOT creating an adaptive internet code that would allow different versions to coexist..

Tbh, minecraft is minecraft. Both versions have their own good and bad things in their code. But the core vanilla experience for both versions is the same. We can place blocks, destroy blocks, build beautiful and less beautiful builds, (everyone has their own taste with build pallet), defeat the enderdragon, etc. But the most important thing is that we can play minecraft and share our stories and show our worlds and builds. And that makes minecrafts minecraft.

I think the biggest issue of Minecraft Bedrock Edition is that it can't be played on Linux and Mac (not counting previous and long dead or soon to be dead versions of Windows, prior to Win10). The reason is that Bedrock Edition is very firmly tied to Xbox platform, which is owned by Microsoft, and Linux and Mac don't have that platform, unlike Windows 10 and 11. So if Mojang was to discontinue Java Edition, they would somehow have to make Bedrock Edition available also on Linux and Mac, with Xbox platform to enable cross-play of course. Because discontinuing Java Edition without making Bedrock Edition available on Linux and Mac would cut out significant chunk of player base that play on those platforms. Yes, Bedrock Edition has more players, that's given by popularity of Windows 10 and 11 and popularity of Xbox and Playstation gaming consoles. But there are also a lot of players that play on Linux or Mac, which is supported only by Java Edition (because Java Edition runs on - well - Java, which runs on Windows, Mac and Linux).

As a Bedrock player (and just to play devil’s advocate), I would like to point out that two of the highlighted features, Ray Tracing and the new world edit, are Windows PC specific features. These features are not available across all Bedrock devices. As long as Bedrock remains fragmented over the various platforms (Windows PC, mobile, console) with some features available on one device and not another, there will always be room for the original Java and the players that prefer it. Not to mention the mods on Java (which are their own extremely robust ecosystem) are generally free while on Bedrock all supported mods are pushed through the marketplace. I, personally, would not want to move to a platform where I would have to buy all the mods I wanted to use when I was already using them for free. Java going the way of the dodo is certainly not impossible and it certainly would be years down the road, but looking at the situation today, I just can’t see Java disappearing.

I suspect Java edition will end up open sourced. Java decompilers mean that in some practical regards, it already is. Existing open source competition has shown that Mojang has little to fear from an open source Minecraft. And it will provide a defense against complaints of them discontinuing it. I suspect that once Java edition is discontinued the differences between it and Bedrock will only increase, as anyone willing to spend the time adding any new features to it won’t be able to resist the temptation to do things “better” (i.e. differently) than Mojang.

I find the ignorance and him blatantly ignoring one of the biggest things about bedrock and modding to be quite funny. Unless mojang (or better put, Microsoft) plans on shutting down the community market, then Java will be around potentially past bedrock. The community market is the way you get mods in bedrock, there's no other way without using a computer to mod the game files, which at that point, why not just mod Java? a simple process made even simpler by just downloading a launcher like forge or fabric. The reason why this will most definitely be chosen over the minecraft community market is in the name itself, market. Minecoins have been a major controversial change to minecraft since they were first added to bedrock, especially since they are the only way to get skin packs, texture packs, mods, etc. While on Java, all of that is free, mods, texture packs, skins, all free. Unless the community market is removed, or made free for all to download whatever they please, then no, Java will not die in the slightest. And that's not even talking about legacy attachment, why would people stop playing Java when it's the MAIN version of Minecraft, the one that receives updates and snapshots FIRST before any other version, and if that were to suddenly change, they would be uproar in the community. Sorry dude, but your conspiracy for Java dying simply does not add up, parity be damned.

I mean, one of my major concerns is that my computer is a Mac, and non-Windows computers are a platform where it's Java or nothing. I play Bedrock with friends by using a Windows partition, but I've noticed it's hard to just pick up and play a game when I have to restart my computer's OS before and after. It works for a social occasion, but not for just casual 'let's work on a build'. So my single-player worlds are all in Java. I'd take a version of Minecraft Bedrock for MacOS, but I'd be disappointed if Minecraft players with MacOS or Linux were left hanging in the wind. (Like, even if modders were maintaining updates, it's still annoying that my computer platform of choice is often an afterthought to developers outside of niche appeal.)

Over the past two years, I'd started playing minecraft a lot more with my friends. We started out on bedrock since they all had xbox's and I was one of two that had a PC. But, as most of us got PC's we started on java. That was all just to say I've pretty much always been a java player, that's what I started out on when I was younger after Pocket Edition. I think the main differences between Java and Bedrock, and the problems that may exist in merging, is that they are coded in two different languages which behave the exact same. A good example of this would be quazzy connectivity, 0-tick pulses, and other technical things. I don't think, and really hope Java doesn't end up being discontinued because of the mechanics and play style. Like others have said, there will be a major backlash from the community, especially those who play on Mac, are into the technical/redstone side, plus Java is just quicker in general. Yes it does take longer to load, but that's with any game, and I'd take Java's quick input response time over Bedrock's crossplay.

*A large point that is overlooked is having to transfer/edit world chunks.* It is doubtful many will switch from their decade old survival/creative worlds so they need to optimize converting them (including entities such as chests and mobs) in addition to the ability to edit chunks (to clear space for the save data and so it reset generation for fewer updates). The things so far have only been achieved via third party tools yet are necessary for Java or players who actively switch between both versions.

Seems like kind of a Ship of Theseus thing, then, for Java edition. Even if it's not the same code base, if the new rendition of Java via Bedrock with mods plays the same as the original Java edition then is the difference anything more than philosophical?

  • @jackcook9005

    @jackcook9005

    Жыл бұрын

Well the difference is that its actually not quite so philosophical. I find it highly unlikely that bedrock will ever truly emulate java as it would be unable to emulate some of the core values. One of which is javas absolute freedom, especially in terms of modding. The developer tools for bedrock add-ons don't give you access to qll the internal moving parts so bedrock mods will never be as involved as java mods. Microsoft would have to surrender additional dev tools to allow for this, which currently does not seem to be in thier interests to do.

5:23 - I think that this point alone (that Java Modders will be able to keep updating Java Edition to emulate future Mojang updates) would be reason alone that Java Edition will never really die out if Mojang ever decides to discontinue it. In all honesty, Java Edition Modders are already key to keeping it alive with things like Optifine, Paper, Bukkit, Spigot, Sodium, Phosphor, Dynamic FPS, and other performance enhancing/fixing mods and server plug-ins that keep the game playable and running at an acceptable FPS. On a different note, while I agree with the premise that Mojang/Microsoft may one day discontinue support for Java Edition, I don't think that this will be happening any time son. The biggest issue is that the main development minds that are driving the development process are all mainly Java Edition players and are much more familiar with how the Java Edition game works. All of the people that we know of as developers (Jeb, Agnes, Kingbdogz, Ulraf, Cory, Dinnerbone, Grumm, gnembon, Slicedlime, etc.) are all part of the Java team. Mojang would have to do a lot of work in developing new talent to compliment this group of people, but to have them designing new content in C++/Bedrock Edition codebase rather than developing in Java and then porting things over to Bedrock. Java Edition isn't going anywhere as long as the people driving the ship are Java players.

You have made some good points, however there is one thing you failed to account for, the 1.19.1 update aka 1.19.84, the infamous player chat report feature. This may be wishful thinking on my part but given all thw controversy it caused and the fact that the no chat report mods were quickly developed to counter them a lot of people with a general distaste for this feature are running this mod on thier servers even if they would otherwise be vanilla. On java the most that can happen is that you lose multiplayer access, however on xbox and perhaps on bedrock as a whole you can lose singleplayer functionality as well. Since all the mods have to go through the marketplace it seems unlikely that Microsoft will allow such a mod to be host there. Meaning that despite thier best efforts, java will persist due to the comfort this mod brings. There's also the fact that there a few other major points that have especially kept me personally from switching, those being the marketplace and the microtransactions it introduces, the lack of QC and nondeterministic redstone. I feel like if bedrock is to have any chance at killing java it will need to correct these things

I play bedrock. I'm just too used to playing on a PlayStation controller, as that's what I did and have been doing since i first played Minecraft. Bedrock has too much priority set on profit, unlike the classic console editions, where they were robust and super stable. I have had many issues with the "flushed out" (a.k.a make it look pretty and release unstable updates) bedrock edition. The lighting system is terrible. I've always hated the transparent slabs, and how the lighting *literally never matches the full blocks around them* and the stairs don't match either. But what I hate even more is the store front. It ruins the front page of the menu. You boot up the game, only to be greeted with some thrown together abomination of Minecraft and movie characters. How did it take them a month to add shorter sneaking and another month to add crawling?

All major content creators are Java. Just Mumbo has more of an audience than Prowl and Silent combined. It'be weird to kill your flagship. Basically I couldn't disagree more on this. I think it's going to happen for sure. But Bedrock is just not cutting it right now and won't be in the foreseable future... parity issues only pile up... support for the community via bugreporting and feedback sites are lacking, RTX seems to be a dead project for there hasn't been any development since mid 2019 (Hallad did a video on that). I just don't know where to start. If Bedrock has to become the main and only version of Minecraft we are left with the "work in progress" software Microsoft is known for filled with bugs that'll "definitely be fixed" in the next paid-for release.

I'd love to get a peek into Mojang/Microsoft's kanban. I use Bedrock mostly because with a fancy DNS tool I can play my server on the switch, PC, mobile and any other device that runs it. It's just so flexible like that. I've considered switching to Java to try out some mods, though right now I haven't had enough of vanilla yet and if I end up liking a mod, I'll do what? Lug my desktop to the toilet so I can mine some sweet ore while I take a dump? Java is awesome though, and the community behind it is core and the mods do look amazing. My only worry is they'll paywall some of the creator stuff and put all the mods in a marketplace or whatever. Though to be fair, as long as it's favourable for the creators monetarily it might be a more stable income for them. My experience of larger companies however is that they like money, and they have more money than you, and just like how addictive pay to play is breadcrumbing you into a pit of debt, mod to earn will breadcrumb you into doing their dirty work. What do I know though? I'm just a cat's face in a moon.

Before the can even consider killing off Java without major backlash, they will need to fix a few issues that rarely happen in Java. And mind you, the one and only reason why there is more player base on Bedrock to Java, is the fact that Java is only coded for PC, all the while Bedrock is coded for a multitude of platforms, from phones and tablets, to gaming consoles, and PC as well. As for Bedrock issues, number one thing that is needed to be fixed is the lag spikes. I don't care what people say, it is a massive issues between ALL platforms that is has bad lag spikes. Even for me, who is playing on a $9k PC will still run into lag spikes from time to time. The random times you will get hurt for no reason is another big issue. And as you said, the modding community is huge on Java compared to Bedrock. They will also need to make it where people can share their work for free as well, if the creators want to, which is one of the biggest things I hate about Bedrock, there is as of now, only 13 free downloads on the Market compared to the literal thousands on Java.

Java Edition at some point could become the new Minecraft Beta of nostalgia, where occasionally people will play it, but everyone will be on Bedrock. I know people hate it at first because of the Marketplace on there, but you have to remember that: A. You don't have to buy anything from there if you don't want to. There are other ways of downloading downloading maps and addons without paying for them and... B. When you do pay for Marketplace content, some of the money goes to the creator and not just Mojang, or Microsoft. Minecraft mods and datapacks have a big player base with over 100M people and since they are .jar folders, won't run on bedrock and will make minecraft lose players

If they fix redstone in bedrock and make it feel more “fluid” like java. Then I would play bedrock. But if they can’t get redstone to work like java then java will never die.

You forgot to explain why people would rather pay for mods that java players get for free. Speaking from a Bedrock player who switched to Java, the game feels nicer in Java plus its nostalgic being the original version/language of the game. I've played every platform of Minecraft exept for VR, and No offense but I would much rather get mods for free plus that nostalgia instead of paying for them, whether or not I have to make said mod myself. I also understand not everybody wants to make mods, me personally I have coded my own small games and such so I am more comfortable than most.

Considering that they have to developer Bedrock for the lowest common denominator (a cell phone) I don’t see any of these features being comparable to Java edition. Red stone will never be the same on both platforms and that’s a huge turnoff for Java players. Even if replay on bedrock works it’s almost certainly going to have less features than the Java one. I can go on and on but I’ll just end with this. I (and all the people I know) aren’t moving to Bedrock for one simple reason. Let’s say all those mods and all that come to Bedrock. I’m not paying to get them from the store when they were free on Java.

The reason why I don't think the job version's going down anytime soon goodude cause they have the free mods if badrock made the marketplace free then it would change
