You are right, I think it's because when you merge the two pictures you're getting 2x the pixels in the combined image. And since the pixels aren't the same, you get a clearer image.

especially watching in 4k (even on a 1080p monitor) because it has reduced compression artifacts.

actually pretty it doesn't have anything to do with res. I think its just the fact that it is more realistic (because it is 3d) and your eyes get a better understanding of the image.

I’ve never seen anyone do it better.

Because you can get anything like this on a 3ds, obviously. :D I'm not sure about the Old 3DS, but in the New 3DS, you can play any 3D stereographic/stereochrome video online via 3DS Broswer.
