Minds Matter - A Mental Health Series | Sam Cushing

After opening up about my own journey, I'm starting a new series to begin intimate conversations with experts and patients, focusing on mental and physical health, hosted by me. In this episode, I invite my friend and practicing Psychologist, Dr. Maya Badwan of the Birch Psychology Practice (IG - @Birchpsy) to talk stigmas around depression and anxiety.
1) COMMENT: Do you like when I talk about these topics? I'm still undecided on a name for this series... let me know any suggestions in the comments!
2) SUBSCRIBE to my channel and turn the bell notifications to ON to be the first to know of any updates.

I love you for making these videos and, as Dr Maya said, for "leading by example". You are totally genuine when talking about mental health, you open up, you take risks, you share your feelings. And this helps all of us: it takes us to accepting that stress and anxiety, feeling depressed, not feeling accepted or feeling lonely and abandoned is not something to look in the mirror for. That's how I came to a suggestion for a title for this series: "Beyond my mirror".

Thank you, Sam and Dr. Maya, for this video. It couldn't be more timely and more relevant. I was severely depressed and suicidal a very long time ago and now I'm not. My faith helped, my family helped, my friends helped, and, above all, therapy helped. There is so much help available, both on-line and off. Take advantage of it. Down with toxic masculinity! 😤. I love you, Sam. 💗 Please continue to do your part in leading us from the darkness into the light. Love from Ct. 😍

This video had a lot of gems in terms of "Aha!" Moments. Some of the things I learned from this video were: 1) we all are afraid to share that we suffer from anxiety, depression, stress because so often we are so invested in what other people think of us. How others perceive us or judge us can contribute so much to our anxiety (will people like how we dress, how we talk, the image we give off, etc), and if we want to share we have mental health issues, we further worry what people think about us for struggling with mental health. It really made me realize that even if we perceive ourselves as independent and not living life by other people's rules, we are still subconsciously or consciously pressured by our need to please others or to be accepted by others. Perhaps it will be a lifelong lesson, perhaps unattainable, to truly stop caring what other people think. I really want to stop caring what other people think and take that pressure off myself, but perhaps that is almost impossible, yet it is an essential ingredient in finding mental wellness. 2) if everyone who suffered from mental health issues truly saw how many millions of people in the US, or really billions in the world, suffer from anxiety and depression, they would realize how normal and non shameful it is. The more people talk about anxiety and depression, the more people feel encouraged to talk about their own mental health issues, which in turn helps others recognize issues in themselves and seek help 3) the US does have a culture where mental health is still in the closet when you look how freely people discuss mental health in Argentina, for example. That is pretty fascinating how positive people are about mental health over there. They talk about going to the therapist on the bus, at the gym, at the market, they are so open and free. We talk in the US so much about body positivity, why cannot we have a similar trend of being positive and celebrating our emotional trials and downs and tribulations? We need anxiousness positivity! 4) the lack of resources financially for mental health is truly shocking in the US. I cannot believe how little health insurance plans reimburse for something as important as talk therapy. Like 10 cents on the dollar?!!! It really does make it hard for someone to seek help if it is so expensive. With more of a conversation through videos like this one being generated in our society, we as a society can validate that mental health is important and underrated and under prioritized and that we need more political action and laws requiring higher reimbursement for these services. Even calling the HR department at your company to petition for better mental health benefits with the company health insurance can really put a bigger focus on mental health. 5) great job moderating Sam!

Anxiety is really high right now for many people. The COVID has caused me more anxiety than I have had before in my life. I was severely injured young and the pain medication caused severe depression. I was close to suicide but didn’t understand why. My PCP helped me get to the right doctor to help. It took several tries to find the right medication to treat the depression. I was lucky to have a wonderful doctor who has me on a low dose medication that makes me feel normal again. Thank you for talking about this topic. At some time in life, most people go through a depression once in life.

Awesome video! Def gonna share this with some of my circles. A couple takes I thought of: - Agree that anxiety doesn't make you function less as a person, but it's also easy to hide if you're good at it. I have had some time periods of being super anxious but no one knew since my interactions with them were the same - Appreciate the references to toxic masculinity (whether LGBT or not). It's def something I've talked about it other ways to other people I know, and hope to see more people change the negative expectations of how a man should act. Even with the 2020 election, some people were influenced to vote in order to maintain this type of masculine culture. It's something that will definitely determine where our leadership will go in the next few years if left unchecked - I also hope to see mental health be treated like a physical. I have always seen as financial cost as a barrier in the US, even when people advocate for others to see a therapist. I'm lucky that my company offers some services for free as a benefit, and hope that this extends to others as well. - As an aside, for a TV show that addresses mental health, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is awesome and is widely known for giving accurate portrayals of mental health issues Thanks for giving an opportunity to have mature discussions about this topic!

As an older Irish gay man 23 years in the U.K., who was raised a Vatican II Catholic in the 1970’s and 1980’s in Rural Ireland, I feel that mental health issues are becoming more prevalent in our modern times not just because we are becoming more aware of them and are talking more about them, but because modern life is becoming more stressful and more demands are being placed on everyone, even children in our modern times - I feel very strongly that a return to traditional Catholic moral and social values coupled with the traditional Catholic religious faith is the greatest antidote to many of these issues and problems, based on the eternal truths of the Catholic faith - and an excellent spiritual practice is to pray the Rosary in Latin daily - I became a traditional Catholic (Mass in Latin) 18 years ago and combined with the Rosary in Latin, it has turned out to be a great asset, especially during Covid

The good doctor makes an excellent point. Yes, we live in a digital age, but when it comes to things like depression and anxiety, I have to wonder how traumatic it is in being locked down for months. It has taken its toll. People losing their livelihoods, not being able to pay their bills or rent, or even putting food on the table all take a mental toll. One other thing to consider is during the fall and winter seasons when there is less natural light, many people deal with Seasonal Affective Disorder. It's a decrease in a brain chemical called serotonin. Personally, I find that staying active and getting out when the sun is shining can go a long way in fighting depression, but if you can't do it alone, then seek the help of a professional. You won't regret it.

Even about stigma itself, maybe once upon a time, the stigma served as surviving strategy for you. It was needed because of ...hostile environment when you grew up for example. Say thanks to them and let them go :). By the way, I am charmed by the way that your eyes communicate with me, so please keep that way ;)

Thank you, both Sam and Maya, for this first installment of your Mental Health Series. I have one suggestion. Although I had not yet heard that in the USA suicide is at its highest rate since the time of World War II, I am very glad that you brought that up. I would have liked for you to explore that further and explain the significance of that, but that could turn into a lengthy topic of its own, and this is just the first episode in the series. I would love for you to explore it further, and following are some reasons. It was good that you all started to touch upon some aspects of mental health being individual while others are collective/societal. I am generally of the mind that the collective/societal aspects really need to be stressed so as to say: 1) You are not alone; and 2) The 'system' needs to be fixed. As that relates back to your claim about the suicide rate being the highest since WWII, yes, the intensification of social media might be rightly partially to blame. But so are economic considerations. Since the federal minimum wage was introduced more than half a century ago, there have been times when the real dollar value of the federal mimumum wage was worth probably at least twice what it is now (looking at the Consumer Price Index is one measure of determining this). And while some products are actually, with respect to inflation, cheaper than they used to be in the past, the reality is that our lives are, while easier in some aspect than lives were in the past, also more complicated - in this day and age, people need more *things* just to stay on an even competitive edge than used to be the case. A lot of *things* are actually not more expensive, in real dollar terms, than they used to be, but *living* is more expensive than it used to be. And since so much of this world is more competitive than it used to be (competition is now more global than it used to be) and people are cheaper than they used to be because of overpopulation, things are just more heated up than they used to be. What our world needs is cooling down. I am aware that I (vaguely) brought up a whole bunch of issues that could induce anxiety even further, but probably only a handful of people will read this comment, whereas thousands of people will watch your actual video, and if my comment is actually read by you, perhaps it might give you further ideas about where you might want to go with this series. I cannot stress again how important it is to explain the context of the times that people are living in, to remind them that a lot of the issues that some individuals might think are "all about them" are NOT about them, and that they should not be so judgmental of themselves, and that a lot of things resolve themselves in time without some individuals doing more than they need to and blaming themselves more than they should. Some people don't take enough responsibility for their own behavior, while others take *too much* responsibility for their behavior. Lastly, I would like to add that toxicity is toxicity - whether that manifests in a 'masculine' fashion or a 'feminine' fashion. If you are going to bring up one manifestation, then to be balanced and fair, please explore the other side of the duality, although it would probably be smarter/safer for a woman to deliver this message through her own platform rather than a man through his own platform. Maybe team up with another prominent influencer from another gendered identity in the LGBT+ community to address this? But this was a great start. Keep it going.

I think people forget that anxiety and depression, anger, are all natural emotions. Because if we didn't have them, we wouldn't know how to survive certain situations. The problem gets when emotions aren't controlled or are ignored, and we end up facing bigger hurdles. I did CBT at one point the thing I learnt the most is that because I don't deal with a problem at the time they build up. So they used an example of cushions, and if you start with one cushion and sort it out you end up with no cushions. But if you have a cushion, place another on top of that, then another, and keep going eventually you end up with maybe 10+ cushions all stacked up on top of each other, and it seems more overwhelming to fix. It would be like if you had a pile of books, and the only way you got through these books is to read every book, one at a time, until that book was finished. Even then you can't guarantee all books will be take the same amount of time to read, because some have pictures and big writing do are easier to understand, whereas some have really small writing, and takes a lot more work and concentration.

When your country's moto includes the statement about being the home of the strong and the brave and such statements as when the going gets tough the tough get going, such statements only emphasize having a back bone and standing up for what you believe in even if it means fighting for it. The United States after all was born through war and has earned the title as being the superpower of the word. On the other hand one only needs to look at the US Military whose moto nowadays is basically fight smarter, not harder which is what wins wars these days. Changes like these are generational. I grew up in the days when it was a sign a weakness if a guy went to a psychologist but times are changing. All one has to do is look at the Vietnam war and PTSD which was not known at the time with respect to Vets that went balistic. I've spoken with former Vets about why there was not such a similar reaction to Vets in prior wars and the answer was that soldiers focused on hiding it if they could usually through alcoholism and such but many of them ended up killing them selves in a manner that made it look like an accident and not suicide as suicide was also a sign of weakness. Look, having these types of conversations will save lives as it gets people thinking in different ways. I've had more than a few contacts over the years kill them selves mostly related to them not accepting who they were. The best solution is by getting it more out in the open and talking about it. It's not a bad thing these days if a tough Vet goes around work with a PTSD puppy. What ever it takes to save a soul. My saying to tough guys is if you are tough than you can deal with something like this, correct? Thank you Sam!!!!!

Ok, where do I start.... All right, I’ll be honest. Looking at your genuinely good looking face with nice smiles and listening to your deep and tiny bit raspy & masculine voice strangely gives me a comfort and a type of a therapeutic effect on me. I’m a lot older guy, probably around your dad’s age, I’m guessing, and I think I’ve been carrying some level of depression to be honest. I think I’ve always had it since I was younger without really not noticing. Depression is something, I think, very weird and hard to grasp or measure how much or how deeply it’s affecting the person and many people are probably not even aware or maybe in denial. I was like one of those. But as I got older, the life sometimes get tougher because I am not young anymore, there is less or no time to full around, you can’t just laugh it off and move on. Even if I could and did, it will not go away but comes back and bite me back harder. My depression goes up & down, sometimes not too bad and sometimes I go through the huge turbulence and not sure how to snap out of it. But I do in the end, thank God, literally. I believe in God, trust in Him so deeply now that the whole world is spinning around and seems like going downward spiral, I have to cling on to my so loving Father, Jesus Christ so much harder and that is the ONLY way to overcome my darkest moments in the deepest corner of the valley. As He promises, He will NEVER abandon me and anyone like a good shepherd. He will come and guide me through out the darkest valley until I can come out to light. So my conclusion is no matter I have to go through in my life, He will be always there for me, He is the ONLY one knows what’s better for me and what I go through therefore I cannot, and never leave Him because He is my refuge, He is my light, He is my comfort and He is the way to peace, hope and love. So I know this may only sound just another “Christian” or religious blurbs, and yes, it could be until whoever will figure out how to open their hearts and trust in our forever loving God, the Father. I still deal with my own depression but every time I call His name from my heart, He listens and answers to my call saying, “Here I am, my child.” What a perfect place to be and I need nothing else to feel most secure and at peace. I hope more people would do the same, find God’s voice who is constantly calling each one of our names as our parents do with care & love. Depression & oppression are the trap and trick by devils who want us to separate us from God and His mercy & love because they are hateful and jealous. They only want us to get lost, confused and disconnect from Him, who feeds us what is good for our souls. That’s where I used to be, lost, confused and almost got disconnected from Him but He didn’t let me in the end. “The good shepherd” went looked for me, the poor “lost sheep”. He left the herd and came found one that had been lost because He knows I will be defenceless and vulnerable. May God find you again if you(anyone) is feeling lost and weak. You are blessed because He will strengthen you and will raise you up high onto His shoulders. May God bless you!! 🙏🏽✨✝️🕊🌿🐑☀️💛

Oops I hit the wrong button. So the first thing I wanted to say how appreciative I was of your video when you were talking about your anxieties, being bullied in school, and just growing up in a world that's not always accepting of people. I truly enjoyed that and I have a great respect for you for doing that. It's one of those things that I say now I should have done. The second thing is the video with your friend focused on mental illness. I have suffered from mental illness my entire life but when I was younger it was afraid to share it with anyone. You got to appoint in my life where I had to do something about it because I was not thinking straight and could have caused harm to myself. Suffering from mental illness is not easy. Anxiety, depression are just a few of the things that are involved with me. But anyway I just wanted to say I have a great respect for what you've done. You've got the courage that I wish I would have had years ago. I'm not ashamed now to tell people that I suffer from depression and anxiety and some days are better than others. But I take each day as it comes. I don't know if you'll ever get to read this but I just wanted to say you're a phenomenal person for coming out and sharing some of those internal feelings that you kind of didn't want to share at one time. God bless you buddy

Sam, I love one of your videos at your house in L.A. during your quarantine on the first episode of mental health series called, The Stigmas: Depression and Anxiety until you're talking to Dr. Maya Badwan on Instagram, who's the psychologist about your mental health and everything while you tell her about your personal life after that, but I want you to stay strong and I'm proud of you, because your mom will be very happy for you and she lives at your hometown in Chicago, Illinois, I know you're gay!!

From my experience from Britain, I think so many people have mental health that there aren't enough workers to support them. The amount of times you try and get help and you get on the waiting list, which can last months even years. I also think not enough money is put towards it, so the easiest option is to provide medication. But in someways I think it is like working with elderly it is just not a particularly popular job. To get the best treatment, would probably cost lots of money, so for some its just easier to end their lifes.

it's not so much a stigma as a "cultural" bias, depending what part of society you belong to, many feel that to go to a therapist is a sign of weakness, when they should be strong and solve their own problems (this especially applies to well functioning people who need some help). As a boomer generation person i like what she said about seeking help is becoming more prevalent in gen. z. Acceptace (like in Argentina) is evolving to become the norm. One should never be afraid to talk to a medical professional about a personal issue.
