I have definitely had moments during periods of intense and frequent meditation when I could tell people noticed the stillness in my presence. When you're radiating deafening silence, sooner or later someone will wonder what's going on. It's true what he says - they want to talk to you more. They confide in you and open up to you. Such an amazing phenomenon. And as always, Shinzen does an outstanding job of instructing with pristine clarity. God bless you.

I used to sit and get myself into a beautiful space then I would go out among people. If someone would talk to me I would look but my space wouldn't change; i would just look and listen but My face and head did not perform the usual social cues. I would not nod, bob my head, etc. This would Zen people out. Sometimes people would ask "What do you do?" I would reply "I am a drunkard" or "I loaf" Then they would get really perplexed. )

I could imagine the whole world shifting if people began relating like this. Great definition of the true art of listening and responding. Hope to try this out one day.

I used to play music and sit in Osho samadhi in Pune India. When i was done I would come out into the sunshine I would be in quite a space! . If I encountered people I would look at them, see them, even talk. I was affable, friendly, smiling, glowing. I got the distinct feeling that they were interpreting my attention as love but inside to me it felt like space and freedom!

From 6:30 on, a lot here sounds like what my Improv teacher says (but then, I signed up for Improv as a spiritual discipline). "What disengages people is that constant pulling towards your own mind and emotions that's reactive or planning." "Be willing to take a chance and start flapping your lips without planning what you're saying--as you get better and better at that, you'll begin to learn how to ride the ox backwards." "Be space moving through space, and let the manifestation occur."

I have done a little of what Young suggests before I ever heard of him, and it works - seeing deeper into a person beneath what they say verbally, which makes dull conversation much more interesting. Sometimes that helps me to cut the crap and tell them things I think to their advantage, although I am at the experimental stage with a sort of 'enlightened advice' - not that I have achieved enlightenment - yet.

Wow! This really makes sense! Actually I found myself conversing with my brother one day having smoked some ganja and he was talking some bullshit about a film he had seen and I really was not interested, and all these things touched in this video occurred quite spontaneously because I did not want to be rude, I kept listening so-to speak and making occational comments and everything felt natural. He rarely had spoken to me in such length and passion, oddly I started to feel that I am really a good conversation partner to him while at the same time almost not being able to follow him at all, but on the other hand I was quite observant of the situation itself.

Jaanus Kiipli Seems dishonest. Why not rip the bandaid off and just let him know you’re not interested in films while practicing your mindfulness. He may switch to a subject which you can both be fully present for.

Funny thing happend to me one day when I had a talk to one girl at work and suddenly she said _"Stop looking at me like that!"_ "Like what?" _"Like you're looking right into me."_ And I was speechless. I wasn't using any technique or anything, I was just talking. Just listening.

I may be wrong but this sounds like your responsiveness to her talking was a little off. In other words, silence and stillness to the point in which it might have been a bit awkward. People don't want to feel like they are being scrutinized. It's too intense. There are nonverbal behaviors you can implement so it doesn't come off as weird (head nods, smiles, etc.)

I really would like to see a video of Shinzen Young talking about how to deal with difficult people (bullies, people who abuse authority positions, parents not respecting their children,...). I haven't found anything on this topic from him and I think is very important, since people affect tremendously our level of consciousness and normally we don't live in a safe monastery just meditating.

He talks about dealing with difficult people in an article called "spiritual alchemy" (free pdf on his site), and in a blog post called "how to be comfortable with everyone". But I agree, it's a very very important topic and it'd be nice to hear him elaborate more deeply on it through youtube...

It happens. All these things. You don't have to 'do' it. The other person brings about these things from within. No conscious effort is needed

Hmm. So we should deem some conversations “not worthy of paying full attention to” and auto-pilot our way through the conversation while we practice lovingkindness meditation towards them?! Not saying I personally have a good track record of paying attention to all conversations I am Involved in but he is teaching here something which seems a bit bad. Why not be honest and let the person know you’re not interested? They might not like it but it saves them from incorrectly thinking that you actually care about whatever asinine topic they are discussing with you because you seems to be engaged.

A tip for patting your head and rubbing belly - move different joints for each task. Pat your head mainly with wrist movement and rub your belly with an elbow movement. That way it's easier not to get them jumbled up
