It's designed to be funny because it subverts what we expect about people in functioning society, but now the novel idea has become so mainstream that it's evolved to something mean-spirited, and now the young people are emulating this behavior. Access to the Internet at yet younger ages means kids watching TikToks full of bad language, sexual degeneracy and overpoliticized narcissism, which becomes "reality" to these children. Imagine how they will turn out? We're already seeing how some kids who grew up watching all the Elsagate KZread videos in 2015-2016 have developed strange paraphilias.

@@jamesb.russell2942 It's specifically designed to engineer your behavior for destruction, to self and others. Not just the fictional characters but the anchors and personalities. When I was a child in the 80s the news anchors dressed for the season, wore their makeup in a professional manner and spoke very professionally. Now you have the likes of O'Reilly, Nancy Grace cutting people's mics off and flaring their nostrils. Robin Meade wearing her lip gloss like a centerfold and those pageant girls they hire to read the prompters on Fox are a joke. Society did not become what it is by accident. We have been conditioned like Pavlovian dogs.

@iknow2145 You are much older than myself and I never watch old news segments but I've seen old movies and TV shows, and it's a different world. The modern world has embraced ugliness and imperfection, coinciding with the cultural downfall of faith as a societal virtue, meaning less of a drive towards beauty and the divine. Now, everyone is perfect as they are. Everyone is the god of their own personal reality, equally as correct and righteous and wonderful. I'm old enough to have seen the Lord of the Rings movies in theaters as a small child, so I remember what culture was like not longer ago cuz it was fairly recent. The media has gone over the cliff at an exponential rate in the last 10 years. So much of it is now hideous and crude and spiteful, with few exceptions. Don't anyone kid themselves; it's all a deliberate project.

If you are taught good manners from early childhood it becomes automatic- a reflex. It actually becomes difficult to NOT be polite. In the end the polite person benefits from it in so many ways- love, friendship, employment, better service, etc. They gain much more than they give.

Another vital element of being well mannered is courteously making yourself understood, explaining what you meant when others don't fully understand you on the first try. It is very rude and aggressive to get mad at them and behave badly because you weren't clear. That's putting the responsibility on others for your lack of articulate communication. We aren't mindreaders; people need to be courteous, respectful and clear. If they aren't, but instead behave badly, they aren't worth being around.

Very true. Some kids today also love to use a whole new set of vocabulary and act like everyone understands what they're talking about. Usually it's invented words that are learned from Tumblr, TikTok and niche university classes about sociology. Sometimes they use it expressly because of its esoteric nature to try to appear smart. It's like an in-joke that's gone wrong. In-joke humor has exploded with the prevalence of internet memes, too. It all feeds into their narcissism.

I think I read in Emily Post's book way back, manners are about preventing problems or harm, and showing consideration instead of selfish non-concern. In all practicality then, it is better for the man to walk down the stairs in front of the lady, in case either slip, the man can catch/shield/prevent her from falling, or if the man slips, he's not going to bowl her over and crush her. Going up the stairs, ladies first. Going down the stairs man first. In Germany tradition is for the man to enter a room first especially if it is an unfamiliar place. again to be her shield in case of danger inside.

Growing up in CA thru the 60's & 70's I saw how these courtesies and manners were going away! At home I was taught these things, but the hardness of life in CA made me forget them. Since my hubby & I have left CA, we've started traveling around & was reminded very much of the old ways / manners when we arrived in Texas and a 10 year old boy opened the door for both of us and said ma'am and sir! We've both have regained our manners & such, especially since we've settled down in Kentucky! The manners really come out around here and the thoughtfulness makes life more enjoyable!!

I think I read in Emily Post's book way back, manners are about preventing problems or harm, and showing consideration instead of selfishness. In all practicality then, it is better for the man to walk down the stairs in front of the lady, in case either slip, the man can catch/shield/prevent her from falling, or if the man slips, he's not going to bowl her over and crush her. Going up the stairs, ladies first. Going down the stairs man first. In Germany tradition is for the man to enter a room first especially if it is an unfamiliar place or full of complete strangers, again to be her shield in case of danger inside.

She doesn't know what vintage is or what the fashion of the fifties is (she's from a really rural part of Mexico) but she makes all her clothes and they all look like fifties outfits. She's soft voiced, gentle, and has great manners. It's perplexing.

Courtesy and respect are timeless. One thing I was taught that was missed here, is that you should lead when descending steps, and your respected other should lead when ascending - the reason being if the respected other stumbles or falls, you can offer some assistance and break the fall. Carlinda I am not only seeing these manners, I still live them, as you do. And, remind people of their lack of manners, as diplomatically as I can. Why isn't this tutorial part of our educational curriculum? Manners are ageless, unless you have the millennial generation that feel entitled to " reinvent the wheel." However, Generation X, are their parents. Where did they give up? Once we can replace , "Have a good one," with, "Your Welcome," "Good Morning," Good Afternoon," "Good Evening," or less "formal," Have a good day, " Have a nice night," When we eliminate ,"No problem" and "Whatever,"( which really is modern day) "F you," then we will return to civility, which really means kindness and respect.

Just thought it was normal in the 80s . Mom made our clothes tended to the home and children. Taught us how to take care of our husband and cook , sew . She was the same way . Over the years I've had so many say your not of this time well I am but not its hard to explain. My husband is 67 im 42 and if you met us and had dinner with us it would be like stepping back in time. I do all the chores , dinner set at a certain time . I never open the door in my pajamas, my husband takes care of the bills and i take care of the home. I greet my husband everyday he comes home too its normal for me .
