I am grateful we suffered through the ads together. Because demonstrating what is distracting and noisy elevates The Minimalists Podcast for actively cropping that noise out. I also think listeners make a connection between the content and the advertisement. If TK loved nachos - it would be awesome if he shared a recipe for nachos. If TK loved nachos and The Minimalists featured a tie-in with Taco Bell, it might water down the goodness of the content.

Honestly this is just weird. Yes I am a fan of Rory & Mal but to make a whole segment judging/making fun of another podcast for making ads is gross. It could have been any podcast and I’d feel the same. You could have had your segment without inserting their ads. This is so pretentious.

How elitist are we that we decided that podcasters shouldn’t have ads? This is the way that they make money? You sound very privileged to say that “I would never watch a movie or TV show with ads…I would rather pay.” This entire conversation is gross as well because we are criticizing another podcast for choosing to use ads. If you don’t want to listen, just skip.

The second woman who wants to leave her corporate job and start her own business, isnt trying to create a new nightmare. Many of us are already in the nightmare of unaffordable life and late capitalism. At least if you start your dream, you're in a better "nightmare" you're in control of. Our nightmare working for other people is someone else's dream of having a bunch of low paid , tired, employees with little other choice.

I don't like advertisements and i appreciate how your podcast/show doesnt have any of your own at least by third party companies. I don't know if its a neurotypical vs neurodivergent thing, like folks with adhd, sensory processing challenges or autistic people might be more offended by commercials because they are SO out of context and stressful on the cognitive load. There's also many studies on how television puts your mind in alpha state which is like a light hypnosis (with deeper hypnosis being theta state, like a lucid dream), and commercials try to sneak their message into that hypnotic state. However some people are dofficult to hypnotize, and thats probably those of us who hate commercials, because we are paying "too much attention" 😂.

T.K. I disagree that everyone likes the ads. I agree with Joshua. I hate the ads!!! I'd rather pay for peace of mind during my relaxing break, when I am watching or listening to something. However, I have changed over the years. When I grew up in the 60s and 70s, we only had ABC, NBC and CBS. Not a lot of choices like we have now. The ads were kind of fun. Even if I left the room where the tv was, I would still hear it. I was programmed to just accept the ads thinking I had no choice. I realize now as an adult, I always have a choice. I can pay for a no ad version or if that is not an option, I can turn it off. It's the same with these distracting billboards while driving in LA. I'll look and at the same time, I don't appreciate how I'm forced to be distracted while I drive. Even if I don't look it's in my per rifle vision. Advertisements suck!

Also, I understand his rationale that he rather go without. That’s cool for YOU, but self care looks different for everyone. It worries me that he said this statement before he made his response about people being grateful about commercials. 38:08

I am very glad you do not have ads. However, I do listen to many podcasts that do and range across the board from valuable to waste of recording space. I was not surprised by JFM‘s response and commentary on the ads and the channels themselves. I do wonder if he is aware of his dogmatism himself on this matter. Interestingly there was language to highlighting the things that trigger us most are exactly the areas to work on or look at or illuminate to find relief and healing. I am listening today to Tim Ferriss and Sheila Heen in a conversation about feedback. Throughout this episode there are some well placed and interesting ads. Tim, I feel, is very discerning and also likely using these products to test on himself and chooses his ads accordingly. Additionally the conversation on feedback is so valuable. My feedback to you regarding advertising is that I would like to support you in your desire to have none. As a slow Minimalzer, this too has been a process for me. I can now listen to most advertising and feel no twinge of need or even want. There is some curiosity in some cases, but the path of less has led me to zone out most of the advertising noise.

Rory didnt write the advertisement and has no stake in the business so why would he put effort into it when he's got his podcast and other ventures. It's a free check to say a few words and listeners dont mind because the funds he's receiving allow them to keep doing the podcast.
