Milwaukee 2646-20 M18 Grease Gun teardown/repair

Good morning everyone. After owning it for over 3 years, the high-speed gear on our Milwaukee 2646-20 M18 grease gun died on us. While the low speed gear is still fine, when you have a large track cylinder to fill or you're going through the 25 or so grease points on a road grader or telehandler, you really start to miss that faster gear range - especially in the winter.
So, I broke down and ordered a replacement gearbox and grease piston from an OEM parts supplier. Somebody else might have chucked this thing in the trash, but for less than half the cost of a new grease gun, buying the parts and fixing it myself was a much cheaper (and far more satisfying) option. Follow along if you'd like to see the repair. Thanks for watching!

Great video! I have one of these Milwaukee grease guns but it doesn't get 10% of the work yours does. Now I know how to keep it running if something goes wrong. Everyone who has one will never go back to a hand pump for greasing your tractors or heavy equipment.

Just last week they started dropping price at most retail locations, $99 tool only. I'm sure at the time it was worth the repairs. Plus it's hard putting a price on knowing what's going on inside a mechanical device so when in use you know what you are hearing happening and you know what you shouldn't be hearing.

The price drop definitely makes the repair far less attractive, but I 100% agree with you on knowing how things tick. It's amazing what a difference in sound (or the presence/absence of a certain sound) can tell you about how something is running.

Thanks Hugo! There are quite a few circuit boards and controllers in these things. They are fairly water resistant but there could be corrosion or short circuits in several places. I'd either send it back to milwaukee for evaluation, or try to pull it apart yourself to see if there are any obvious points where water has caused corrosion on the boards or inside the switches. Make sure its 100% dry before trying to use it. Flush it with rubbing alcohol to displace any residual water.
