Milton Erickson - Awakening Through Auto-Hypnosis

Learn more at Erickson-Foundation.org/EricksonVideo
In this clip, Milton Erickson talks about his approach to auto-hypnosis. There is a value in activating unconscious processes within clients, or even ourselves. There are dormant resources within us - that we may not realize that we have - which can be activated to provide us with new appraisals on situations we face.
Self-hypnosis is originally thought to be a procedure that occurs from the outside in. You would put suggestions into your unconscious mind to program yourself with ideas. Dr. Erickson had a very different idea about auto-hypnosis. He believed that auto-hypnosis shouldn’t be done by programming, but by “awakening”.
Typically we see hypnosis as a dream-like state, but to Erickson, hypnosis was an activation. You were activating unconscious processes. You were awakening the client to potentials that had previously been dormant.

    The life and career of Milton Erickson would make for the best NetFlix series of all time, that is, if told accurately and in done so to honor his work, revealing his genius and his great contributions to psychotherapy as he was essentially blazed the trail for an entire new industry that would transform the lives of countless people. It could be based on running parallel time lines, one of his childhood and teen years and the struggles and challenges he faced especially with polio. The second timeline would be of his career, the challenges that came with being essentially ostracized from the mental health industry but especially the incredible stories of the patients he helped including the lady with gap in her teeth. Each episode can introduce a new patient he helped, their interactions, and the fascinating methods he used to help them break free, somewhat like we see on the show House. I think the most epic scene of such a series would be of Milton in his youth, paralyzed from polio, sitting alone in the middle of a misty field at sunset, when he throws himself off of his wheelchair, and proceeds to crawl as far away from his chair as he could which forced him to then crawl all the way back, all to force himself to prove his doctor wrong and eventually walk again. Tell me that wouldn’t be epic??

    Yeah I agree this stuff is gold. Love it, love this channel, and the foundation! What's up with the tag under the video? Having that tag there about "accredited health authority" almost presupposes, or implies this man was not that. What a joke 😂. I guess mainstream medicine/therapy will never give up the frame that only they hold the key of knowledge, and are the only authority on what is deemed to be effective treatment. Keeping people coming back keeps the money flowing in I guess. Also, having the knowledge of gaining rapport with, and being able to positively influence the unconscious mind potentially gives individuals much more power, peace and sovereignty over themselves. Which is, once again, troublesome for those wishing to make more money. Apologies for bringing a discussion like this here, as this is a wonderful educational channel. But tags like that annoy me, because it could potentially steer individuals new to this school of thought away. It's obvious that nobody is implying that these videos are an accredited curriculum in themselves. They're for professionals to gain deeper insights.

    Thank you very much for sharing this, Dr. Zeig, the effectiveness and efficiency he demonstrates are astonishing! Another Aspect I've found fascinating is Ericksons utilization of the unconscious for learning/understanding and strategic thinking. But I haven't yet found out how to "let the unconscious have a look". I know there is nothing payed attention to that evades the unconscious but there is a lot not payed attention to that the unconscious perceives, fully. I'd like to give my unconscious more of a way of expression than "good ideas out of the blue", and even give it more "time" to do whatever it needs to do, processing-wise. Maybe it would be interesting for you to do a video on what is basically "empowering the unconscious". And I'm sure we (your viewers) could learn a lot here, even though it might stray a bit from pure therapy!

  • @A_Jel

    @A_Jel

    3 жыл бұрын

    I’ll attempt to answer that but in many ways my answer doesn’t really matter. It makes you wonder how a person can discover that on a deeper level even before you know that you know, doesn’t it? Erickson once said, sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know. Or maybe you don’t know what you already know in those deeper currents of your unconscious until you become aware of that, and as a person relaxes with that on a deeper level, and just really begin to set that conscious mind aside for a moment, a person can discover so quickly just how much they already know. Now, I don’t know what that looks like exactly, or just how good that can possibly begin to feel. Because as you set aside that conscious mind, and decide to allow the unconscious responds completely and people are often surprised as they learn that contained within a so-called problem is the most suitable solution. We often do know that we already know how to solve it, and yet that conscious mind does a wonderful job at “keeping the ball in the air” and as you let that ball drop further down now you can experience so many things becoming clearer in those certain ways.
