That is hilarious that Milt Kahl never felt compelled to draw, and yet he's one of the most famous and successful animators to have ever lived. He got so good at it that the head waggle he gave characters he animated is almost his calling card. Also, I watched that Ferdinand the Bull short many, many times as a child and never knew it was Milt's voice.

Yep I think almost every animator has had to draw a scene or character they didn't want to. I think what motivates most animators is seeing all the drawings come together as the final result.

Milt was always bitter that he didn't get to animate Captain Hook and Cruella DeVil. In animating Medusa in The Rescuers, he was trying to top Marc Davis' animation of Cruella. He didn't. Medusa is more flamboyant and her gestures overly exaggerated, but it takes more than that to make a great villain.

@@SuperAlfern He was and he wasn't. At that point Milt, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson were essentially animation directors who directed story sessions, coached actors on dialogue, designed the characters they were animating... Medusa was all Milt's creation. I always look at Medusa as being inspired by Carol Burnett, who was hugely popular at the time. I can't look at Medusa and not see Carol.

Madame Medusa is a superb villain and she is brilliantly animated. She's also one of the more realistic Disney villains in that her motives and character traits are more down-to-earth. She's a normal person seeking believable and ultimately achievable goals. No 'want to rule the world,' 'turns into a dragon,' 'has magic at her disposition,' 'wants to be the prettiest' nonsense. Cruella de Vil is another great villain, but her actual character is not as well developed as Madame Medusa's.
