I live in New Orleans. As a kid in the early and mid 1960's we could sleep in comfort with a window fan pulling a breeze through the house. The reason it's a different type of heat is the humidity. The water in the air is much denser than it used to be. In the middle of the city it's suffocating. The auto exhaust mixed with the humidity and heat makes it almost impossible to get a deep breath.

Stay safe Dan my family was from New Orleans way back. I know I don.t have to tell you but if you get up and going at 5 am and then siesta and then run errands after 7pm you can stay safe. My grandma from Waco would get sheets wet super early and use fans and wet sheets on the kids wrapping them up to 3x a day. I live in CA and our county lost 917 homes in CA fires. Poor animals too.

@Dan Corkren, living in Northern Oregon, we were the same! We didn't need central air. I remember it raining until July 4th. We did have a few hot days in August, but last June, 2021, we had 115!!! For a few days. Next week we are at 103. We have noticed big changes the past 7 years. The saving grace for us this year is that it rained for two months straight, so our water supply is not low.

I sleep with a wet towel on my body and stay cool most of the night. I also freeze water bottles and put them under my neck at night and give one to each of my dogs for their beds. The dogs lick on the condensation and lay on the bottle until it is warm. Then I freeze it again. Always keeping one bottle frozen while I use the other. This has worked substantially to help me stay cool without air conditioning. I also keep a half bath of cool water and if my dogs get to hot I put them in the water, towel them off and let them air dry. It cools their body down and helps them feel relief. Some tips for friends who may be suffering from this heat. Drink lots of water. Spray water on you outside. Dollar store has cheap spray bottles and hand held fans.

When my electric went out in the middle of summer for six days here in mid Florida, I would sit outside with the hose and spray the grass, the bushes and my legs. I also would take a spritz bottle to bed with me with water in it, and every couple of hours, waking from the heat, I would spray down my body so I could sleep. It made for a wet bed, but it dried fast. If it happens again, I'll be buying an insulated cooler so I can go get some ice outside the dead zone. Usually when the electric goes out, you can find places that it's still on not far from you - and get cool, get ice and get food. I didn't do that last time. I'm an idiot.

You must be young, thin and very healthy because I've been to Florida many times and it's just like here in South Carolina. Extreme heat and humidity. The last time our heat pump went out I had to go stay with family. I can't tolerate it even in a swimming pool. Just reading your post gave me a hot flash. I remember growing up as a kid in Jersey you went to sleep sweating and you woke up that way . There was no central ac . I remember when my dad brought home this monstrosity of a window ac unit and we were amazed how it put out gold air in summer . Like a miracle . I think I remember it fell out of our 2 story window like a Seinfeld episode . For people of today the problem is many work and live in air conditioning . We drive with ac . We don't allow our bodies to adapt to the seasons anymore so we are suspectable to changes and variations to tempature . For the UK they have no experience to this so they are not adapted to it and they have little in the way of air-conditioning . I live in the high desert in socal . The summer it mostly averages a 100 degrees . My ac does not go on until early afternoon and set it at 82 and turn it off at 9 pm . I have ceiling fans to circulate the air . Now it is a low humidity area so perceperation with air circulation will cool the skin and body . Is it a bit a un comfortable .? Yes but I adapt . If you think about it your bodies tempature is at 98.6 degrees f . We are less and less living in the natural environment and more in a unnatural climate control system . This leads to an even more warming planet as that system uses allot of energy .

At 88degrees F with high humidity, our bodies cannot cool quickly enough to “adapt” as you put it. We generate heat when we digest food, when we move, when we breathe. A very healthy person has a hard time doing much of anything for an extended period of time in high humidity above 85 degrees.

I'm from Switzerland. What do you think of when you hear Switzerland? Snow? cold? When I was a child (in the 90s), we always had a ton of snow in our backyard. You could build snowmen and everything. These last few years we barely get any snowflakes in the cities. Only up in the mountains. Our glaciers are melting, too. Summer used to be pretty nice. One or two days a year we would hit 30C (86F). Now every year we hit 34 or some parts of the country even 39 (102F). And for a longer time period, too. Right now we have two weeks of temperatures over 30. We don't have air conditioning in private homes. When it's over 30 degrees for a few days in a row, you barely sleep a wink because it's too hot. You just turn in bed all night and then feel horrible in the morning lol. Anyway, just wanted to tell you guys about our experience of the climate change(TM). Stay cool and safe.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This summer the Rio Grande is drying up, as are all of our major reservoirs out west which supply all our major cities. I remember snowmobiling in our mountains back in the 80's in early spring. Now we no longer get much snow up there. There was a ski club in my high school, but now there's no skiing. We really screwed up, and all these deniers who piled on every article about the problem, just made it worse.

It has not been 103 here in Illinois, or ever since I've lived here in the last 10 years. That's a damn lie! Not even Springfield has reached high 90s consistently. The hottest day in the southern part of the state was 97 on July 19th, and it's since then gone down.

That's feels like temps, basically the humidity makes it feel hotter. And if you go outside I would say it's pretty accurate. Same reason the dryer areas like Phoneix the "feels like temps" went down. Also it was 100F in East St. Louis vs. About 90F in Chicago.

I lived in NOTHERN Illinois most of my life. I remember 103 back in the early 60's ,in 93 and 2011 ( with heat index of 123) just for starters. Summer was always hot . Back then it was called a heat wave.

I know it's very common for snowbirds to spend their winters in FL. But are there southerners that spend their summers in Alaska?

Probably because everything costs a lot more there than the lower 48.
