Most of those video clips are of the ferocious flooding in Stellenbosh where the Eerste River burst its banks leaving many lovely homes in various areas along the banks, knee deep in water, mud, silt, debris and destruction! The Eerste River, usually a narrow stream flowing over beautiful large boulders, is the fastest flowing river in South Africa when in flood. While winter rains cause raised water levels most every year, flooding, such as occured in Stellenbosch on Friday night 16th into Saturday 17th, occurs once every 20+ years. Many parts of the Boland experienced large flooding. And many charities do amazing altruistic work, without publicity.

The reason why these places are affected by flooding is very simple. Do not build on ancient flood plains. It is the fault of the developers and city planers. Even if the area has not had any floods for say 50 years, it will flood sooner or later. There are many examples around the world of this practise in stupidity.

Our people should hsve done so indeed. Always plan ahead for the worst scenario whatever it may be. Also the new government ANC cartel et al hasn't kept up maintenance of a once world class infrastructure in many areas and blocked drains common for years on end.

This is not "typical" - lived in CT since 1985 and never seen so much rainfall and it's only the beginning of winter and we have power outages (loadshedding) to complicate matters. A few years ago we were at "day zero" with the worst droughts in history and all the dams were empty...now they're overflowing and ppl have to evacuate as sluice gates are opened to avoid collapse of dam walls...

Be mindful where you buy your home in Cape Town . For me, the northern suburb (PAROW, BELLVILLE ,PLATEKLOOF ,MILNERTON )is the best . Few to no rivers .

He can strengthen us, when we are weak, He can comfort us when we are hurting and He can heal us from our pain, He can give us hope even when we think that there is none.
