The Candidates Tournament 2018 is an eight-player double round-robin chess tournament, which will be held in Berlin, Germany, from 10-28 March 2018. The winner earns the right to challenge the defending world champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, in the World Chess Championship 2018.
The tournament will be contested as a double round-robin with each player playing 14 games. This means players will face each other twice (once with black pieces and once with the white pieces). Four rest days will take place: after rounds 3, 6, 9, and 12. The winner of this 8-player candidates tournament will be the challenger of Magnus Carlsen at the World Chess Championship 2018.
The prize fund (Regulations 3.8.1) is 420,000 euros, with 95,000 to the winner, 88,000 to second, 75,000 to third, down to 17,000 for last place. Prize money will be divided equally between players on the same score.

Lessons from the game: 1. Better be weir on photos than over the board 2. Never get scared of actually winning the candidates 3. Never let someone infiltrate you from behind!

Whoa! He opened this video so enthusiastically! Hello to you too Agadmator!
Thank you, Antonio for your great game analysis... The photos in full screen are fabulous too!
Phenomenal comeback from Karjakin in the tournament so far!
I think I said this on a previous game, but your analysis seems to get better and better with every video. Thanks again.
agadmator shows again why is he such a fantastically popular chess channel. Fantastic commentary. So good that each time I open the channel looking for the next Tal Botvinnik 1960 game, and I don't see it and feel cheated, then I watch what you post from the candidates and I forgive you!!
Just watched this game earlier on The Chess Puzzler. Your presentation is vastly superior. You even considered a line that I would have played and showed me what was wrong with it. GOOD JOB!
Another excellent game from an exceptional tournament and the tension is still there!
#suggestion Ding Liren Mamedyarov from Today. Requiem for a Giri.

I'VE NEVER LISTENED TO YASSER, BUT ANTONIO IS NOW MY FAVORITE CHESS COMMENTATOR!
Love ur channel awesome stuff! And the dog is the best!
LET´S GO KARJAKIN!!!!!!!!
I feel bad for Sergey...he played well and people are not happy with that!? I know the previous Carlsen-Karjakin match was somehow "boring"(I wouldn't use that word...)due to few decisive games and similar openings, but...it's a match and you just try your best to win! And It was such a close match! Karjakin even won the first decisive game and took the lead! I'd say that this candidate tournament is almost historical in chess, no matter who wins, he is the challenger! We just watch!

Alex19781986 There werent many wins due to Sergeys amazing defense. Its not about wins but the quality of the games.
Very cool game, you do such a good job explaining how strategy and lines I would have used are terrible and would totally fail
You really have to admire Karjakin's single mindedness and ruthlessness. A rematch of 2016's WC would be fascinating. I'm not sure I would bet against him either. I think he would wear Carlsen down.
@kasparov937
6 жыл бұрын
Richard Hunter Probably the toughest opponent for Carlsen, that 2016 match went all the way. Candidates not over yet though. Sergey should try not to lose from here. Yes he is ruthless, cold, calculating with nerves of steel. Exactly whats needed to win an event like this.
@PaterTenebrarum1

Richard Hunter To be sure, Carlsen actually got extremely lucky last time around. Karjakin let him get away in a game by blundering at a decisive moment.
What a day it was today. Karjakin defeats Fabi, and Ding wins!

This tournament gets more exciting every day.
Infiltrate from behind lmao. Good for you for keeping a straight face sir
14:35 In 2016, after Round 13 both had same points and Round 14 was Karjakin vs Caruana. Winner wins the tournament. 14:53 More like Big balls in candidates...

well said agadmator well said
Where is the close-up photo from Fabiano 🤔😳
Sergey does have the strongest nerves and a level head. In the round 9 press conference, he said he was 'going step by step' and would 'have some chances' if he kept playing well. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqWtxo-DYZTQobw.htmlm35s That's when I thought that the guy was prepared to challenge Caruana all of a sudden. Perhaps he got a confidence boost from Kramnik's boycott of the conference, a flashback to Carlsen's boycott during the 2016 match when Sergey was in his prime. I'd still prefer Fabi to win, but he might indeed lose the tournament to Sergey (or Shakh, or Liren, or Alex - wow, how dense the top of the leaderboard is!).
@matej0909

when did kramnik boycott the press conference?
@UnXPLO1Table
6 жыл бұрын
Kramnik was so upset by his round 9 loss to Karjakin that Vladimir didn't attend the press conference after that particular round. At the start of the conference kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqWtxo-DYZTQobw.html when Mrs Karlovich announced that she was hoping that Vladimir would join later, Sergey couldn't help grinning, as he knew that wouldn't happen :D Nastya's deep sigh just before she started talking was very telling too :D
Yes sergey karjakin is gonna win the candidates.

I don't think any of these guys can beat Carlsen, but it'll be fun to watch one of them try.
What is the best opening ? _ Bobby Fischer : e4 ...
6:30 "Infiltrating Fabi from behind."
"Trying to infiltrate fabi from behind" LOL
"...had... had like... the best second half of the tournament like... like... in ever." your loss for words says it all.
It’s ok to root for your guy Agadmator... win or lose
trying to infiltrate Fabi from behind 6:28 xD
Yo agadmator, explain how can white king advance at 13.41 if rook is covering whole lin?
Bg4 was described as fine move by Sergey. He even expected it. Also, it was one of the top engine suggestions. f5 was an option but in video you describe Bg4 as a panicky move. I don't think that is the case
I haven't kept up with chess in the last year as much as I used to. Can anyone tell me why Nakamura didn't qualify for the candidates tournament? Or the games he lost to keep him from entering?
It would be nice to see Karjakins revenge against Carlsen...i doubt it would be anything like 2 years ago...

Woahhhhh Sergey is dominating
nice dog man
Lovely 🌹 games 🎮
10:27 Agad could you explain why wouldn't it be a good move to take f7 pawn with bishop ? i'd consider that as a strong move and would probably play it,if queen captures you can win the queen with discovery,if not you can capture the rook on e8
@ugurceliktas
5 жыл бұрын
After recognizing my failed attemp at the move i decided not to remove my comment,remembering im playing agains a gm simply he'll capture my bishop and i lose a piece,but....Maybe after Queen f4 and then doing that move could work
one of the few videos I did not become distracted by the dog lol
Karjakin is playing beautifully. A Carlsen-Karjakin rematch coming??

The Candidates has now become truly fierce. I still want Fabi to win it, let's see what happens :).
6:27 and trying infiltrate Fabi from behind. Notti Karjakin.
I have come for that dancing doggie, now I can sleep peacefully.
"As they say, it's better to be weird in photos than over the board." :)
Karjakin is very underrated.
#suggestion Ding Liren Mamedyarov from Today
🔥🔥🔥
At the end wasn't bishop d5 a very strong option because then you can push the a pawn with protection from the rook, and if you want to get rid of the bishop you need to sac the rook and then you push the g pawn and win
That's sergey the invisible beast that could kicked many big asses in this tournament
The line at 10:43 DOES work. After Qxd7, instead of Bxf7 check, you can go B to e4 check. This protects the rook and still wins the black queen. Or am I overlooking something else??
Just wow
Best hello everyone yet, give it a quick rewind if you missed it
4:20 The bishop on d5 is not a monster. It is pinned to the queen.
That intro was loud.. Haha
3:39 - Fabi really got scared of winning the candidates. LOL
"You know as they say its better to be weird on photos than over the board" I am pretty sure you are the first one saying it :D :D :D #highlight
I'm againn agad
Fabi could not avoid a massive back rank penetration
11:00 Bishop check idea fails as you can always just put the queen in front of the king(Qd6), taking the rook is less good as you can avoid fixing the white pawns, but to be honest both ways just end with white fighting for that draw. I came to this idea after thinking why not play to bishop e4 check, this would trade down to a rook endgame but you would be up 2 pawns. After 30 secs I saw the queen can just block by playing Qd6!!, as it can't take the rook, as the king is in check and the bishop is in the way of the rook. You just end up having to take the queen with the rook at some point as she is pin down.
"Trying to infiltrate Fabi from behind" If you know what I mean ;)
"It's not like I'm too happy , but ....." Ok, yeah, I'm happy. .
Lol. You know what they say: Its better to be weird in photo then over the board.
We’re going to see a Carlsen Karjakin rematch!!
