The Candidates Tournament 2018 is an eight-player double round-robin chess tournament, which will be held in Berlin, Germany, from 10-28 March 2018. The winner earns the right to challenge the defending world champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, in the World Chess Championship 2018.
The tournament will be contested as a double round-robin with each player playing 14 games. This means players will face each other twice (once with black pieces and once with the white pieces). Four rest days will take place: after rounds 3, 6, 9, and 12. The winner of this 8-player candidates tournament will be the challenger of Magnus Carlsen at the World Chess Championship 2018.
The prize fund (Regulations 3.8.1) is 420,000 euros, with 95,000 to the winner, 88,000 to second, 75,000 to third, down to 17,000 for last place. Prize money will be divided equally between players on the same score.

I feel bad for Sergey...he played well and people are not happy with that!? I know the previous Carlsen-Karjakin match was somehow "boring"(I wouldn't use that word...)due to few decisive games and similar openings, but...it's a match and you just try your best to win! And It was such a close match! Karjakin even won the first decisive game and took the lead! I'd say that this candidate tournament is almost historical in chess, no matter who wins, he is the challenger! We just watch!

You really have to admire Karjakin's single mindedness and ruthlessness. A rematch of 2016's WC would be fascinating. I'm not sure I would bet against him either. I think he would wear Carlsen down.

Richard Hunter Probably the toughest opponent for Carlsen, that 2016 match went all the way. Candidates not over yet though. Sergey should try not to lose from here. Yes he is ruthless, cold, calculating with nerves of steel. Exactly whats needed to win an event like this.

Richard Hunter To be sure, Carlsen actually got extremely lucky last time around. Karjakin let him get away in a game by blundering at a decisive moment.

Sergey does have the strongest nerves and a level head. In the round 9 press conference, he said he was 'going step by step' and would 'have some chances' if he kept playing well. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqWtxo-DYZTQobw.htmlm35s That's when I thought that the guy was prepared to challenge Caruana all of a sudden. Perhaps he got a confidence boost from Kramnik's boycott of the conference, a flashback to Carlsen's boycott during the 2016 match when Sergey was in his prime. I'd still prefer Fabi to win, but he might indeed lose the tournament to Sergey (or Shakh, or Liren, or Alex - wow, how dense the top of the leaderboard is!).

At the start of the conference kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqWtxo-DYZTQobw.html when Mrs Karlovich announced that she was hoping that Vladimir would join later, Sergey couldn't help grinning, as he knew that wouldn't happen :D Nastya's deep sigh just before she started talking was very telling too :D

At the end wasn't bishop d5 a very strong option because then you can push the a pawn with protection from the rook, and if you want to get rid of the bishop you need to sac the rook and then you push the g pawn and win

The line at 10:43 DOES work. After Qxd7, instead of Bxf7 check, you can go B to e4 check. This protects the rook and still wins the black queen. Or am I overlooking something else??

11:00 Bishop check idea fails as you can always just put the queen in front of the king(Qd6), taking the rook is less good as you can avoid fixing the white pawns, but to be honest both ways just end with white fighting for that draw. I came to this idea after thinking why not play to bishop e4 check, this would trade down to a rook endgame but you would be up 2 pawns. After 30 secs I saw the queen can just block by playing Qd6!!, as it can't take the rook, as the king is in check and the bishop is in the way of the rook. You just end up having to take the queen with the rook at some point as she is pin down.

I don't mind ...even though the last match wasn't so enjoyable due to lots of draws and Ruy Lopez openings, but if Karjakin can make it happen again, then he really is somebody in history

Its not unfortunate, if Sergey wins he deserves it, remember how tough he was for Carlsen 2 years ago? Great game from Karjakin! Was a great match in 2016 so much tension right to the end.
